The Northern Lights as Spirit Gateway: Aurora Borealis in Shamanic Tradition
Share
In the cosmologies of the Arctic and subarctic peoples — the Sámi of northern Scandinavia and the Kola Peninsula, the Inuit across the circumpolar north, the Yup'ik and Alutiiq of Alaska, the various peoples of Siberia — the aurora borealis is not a meteorological phenomenon. It is a manifestation of the spirit world: the visible presence of the ancestors, the dancing of the souls of the dead, the gateway between the physical world and the upper realms where the spirit guides and cosmic intelligences dwell.
The Sámi word for the northern lights, guovssahasat, is related to words for whisper and voice — the lights are understood to speak, to communicate, to carry messages from the spirit world to those on earth who know how to listen. The Inuit of Greenland believed that the lights were the spirits of the dead playing ball with a walrus skull; in other Inuit traditions, they were torch-bearers guiding the newly dead on their journey to the spirit world. The specifics differ between cultures; the fundamental understanding is consistent: the aurora marks a thinning of the boundary between worlds.
The Physics of the Gateway
The aurora borealis is produced when charged particles from the sun — carried on the solar wind — collide with molecules in the Earth's upper atmosphere along the magnetic field lines near the poles. The different colors correspond to different atmospheric gases at different altitudes: oxygen at higher altitudes producing red, oxygen lower producing green, nitrogen producing blue and purple. The curtains and ribbons of light move because the solar wind that produces them is itself dynamic, constantly shifting in intensity and direction.
From the shamanic perspective, this physics is not separate from the spiritual understanding but continuous with it. The aurora is literally the meeting point of solar energy and the Earth's magnetic field — the place where the sun's power and the Earth's own electromagnetic body interact most dramatically. The shamanic traditions that identified this as a spirit gateway were mapping, in their own language, a place where the ordinary boundaries of the physical world become unusually permeable to the energies and intelligences of the wider cosmos.
The Shaman as World-Traveler
The shamanic practitioner in the Arctic traditions is, above all, a traveler between worlds — someone who has developed the capacity to enter non-ordinary states of consciousness and navigate the spirit world on behalf of the community, bringing back healing, guidance, and the recovery of lost soul parts. The aurora is one of the primary gateways through which this travel occurs in the northern traditions: the shamanic journey that begins under the northern lights uses the aurora as the literal portal through which the shaman's consciousness passes into the upper world.
The techniques for entering the shamanic state in the Arctic traditions include drumming, chanting, extended fasting, exposure to extreme cold, and sustained focus on the aurora itself in the dark of the Arctic night. The common element across all these techniques is the alteration of ordinary consciousness through sustained attention — the deliberate shifting of awareness from the ordinary waking state into the receptive, expanded state from which spirit world travel becomes possible.
The Aurora in Modern Shamanic Practice
For the contemporary practitioner who cannot stand under the physical aurora in the Arctic night, the aurora remains accessible as a focus for shamanic meditation — as a visualized gateway through which the consciousness can travel in the shamanic journey state. The visual quality of the aurora — its dynamic, luminous, multicolored curtains of light moving against the dark sky — is immediately recognizable to the visual imagination, and its use as a meditation focus activates the same quality of between-worlds consciousness that the physical aurora has always inspired in those who have stood beneath it.
