Offensive Magic in the Solomonic Tradition: When Attack Is the Appropriate Response
Share
The Solomonic tradition contains both protective and offensive instruments — seals of defense and seals of attack, instruments of blessing and instruments of cursing. The Sixth Pentacle of Saturn is among the tradition's most explicitly offensive instruments, and understanding when offensive magic is the appropriate response — within the tradition's own framework — reveals the specific circumstances for which the Sixth Pentacle was designed.
The Tradition's Acknowledgment of Offensive Magic
The Solomonic tradition does not pretend that offensive magic does not exist or that it is never appropriate. The Key of Solomon contains explicit instruments of cursing, destruction, and spiritual attack — instruments whose purpose is acknowledged directly and whose use is described without apology. This acknowledgment reflects the tradition's realistic understanding of human experience: that there are genuine adversaries, genuine threats, and genuine situations in which defensive measures are insufficient and offensive action is required.
The tradition's approach to offensive magic is not one of casual use or emotional reactivity; it is one of deliberate, considered action taken with full awareness of the ethical and spiritual weight of what is being set in motion. The practitioner who works with the Sixth Pentacle is expected to have considered their situation carefully, to have determined that offensive action is genuinely warranted, and to be prepared to accept full responsibility for the consequences of their working.
When Attack Is the Appropriate Response
Within the Solomonic tradition's framework, offensive magic is the appropriate response in a specific set of circumstances:
When the adversary is actively causing harm: The target is not merely someone the practitioner dislikes; they are someone who is actively causing genuine harm — to the practitioner, to people the practitioner is responsible for protecting, or to situations the practitioner has a legitimate interest in defending.
When defensive measures have proven insufficient: The practitioner has employed protective and defensive measures and found them insufficient to stop the adversary's harmful actions. The harm continues despite the practitioner's defensive efforts, and offensive action is required to stop it.
When the adversary cannot be addressed through ordinary means: The situation cannot be resolved through direct communication, legal action, or other ordinary means of addressing conflict. The adversary is beyond the reach of ordinary remedies, and magical intervention is the remaining option.
When the practitioner accepts full responsibility: The practitioner has considered the full ethical and spiritual weight of offensive magic and is prepared to accept complete responsibility for the consequences of their working — including consequences they cannot fully anticipate.
The Distinction Between Justice and Revenge
The Solomonic tradition distinguishes between offensive magic directed at genuine adversaries who are causing real harm (which the tradition acknowledges as legitimate) and offensive magic directed at targets out of personal grievance, jealousy, or emotional reactivity (which the tradition treats as a misuse of the instruments). The practitioner who works with the Sixth Pentacle should be honest with themselves about which category their situation falls into.
