Opening by Watchtower: Invoking the Four Quarters

BY NICOLE LAU

The Opening by Watchtower is one of the most powerful circle-casting rituals in Western ceremonial magic. Originating from the Golden Dawn tradition and drawing on Enochian magic, it calls upon the elemental watchtowersβ€”cosmic guardians stationed at the four cardinal directionsβ€”to witness and protect your ritual space.

This is not a simple protection spell. It's a full invocation that opens portals to the elemental realms and invites their powers into your working.

When you need serious magical firepower, this is the ritual to use.

What Are the Watchtowers?

In Enochian and Golden Dawn cosmology, the watchtowers are four great towers or fortresses that stand at the edges of the universe, each governing one of the classical elements and its corresponding direction.

Think of them as cosmic border stations where elemental forces are concentrated and guarded by angelic beings.

The Four Watchtowers:

  • Eastern Watchtower (Air): Realm of intellect, communication, dawn, new beginnings
  • Southern Watchtower (Fire): Realm of passion, transformation, noon, peak energy
  • Western Watchtower (Water): Realm of emotion, intuition, dusk, mystery
  • Northern Watchtower (Earth): Realm of manifestation, stability, midnight, grounding

Each watchtower is guarded by an archangel and populated by elemental beings (sylphs, salamanders, undines, gnomes).

When to Use the Opening by Watchtower

This ritual is for serious magical work:

  • Major spellwork requiring strong elemental support
  • Evocations or invocations of spirits or deities
  • Sabbat or Esbat celebrations in ceremonial traditions
  • Group rituals where you need a powerful container
  • Initiations or dedications
  • Any working where you want maximum protection and power

It's more elaborate than the LBRP and creates a much stronger energetic boundary.

The Opening by Watchtower: Step-by-Step

Preparation:

  • Clear and cleanse your space
  • Set up your altar in the center or East
  • Have your elemental tools ready (wand, cup, sword/athame, pentacle)
  • Optional: elemental candles (yellow/East, red/South, blue/West, green/North)

Part 1: Perform the LBRP

Begin by performing the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram to clear the space of unwanted energies. This creates a clean slate for the watchtower invocations.

Part 2: Cast the Circle

Starting in the East, walk clockwise (deosil) around your space with your wand, athame, or finger extended, visualizing a circle of brilliant white light forming around you.

As you walk, say:

"I cast this circle round about,
A boundary of power, within and without.
A sphere of protection, above and below,
As I will it, so shall it be so."

Return to the East. The circle is now cast.

Part 3: Invoke the Eastern Watchtower (Air)

Face East. Raise your wand (or hand) and say:

"Hail, Guardians of the Watchtower of the East,
Powers of Air!
I call upon you to witness this rite
And guard this sacred circle.
Raphael, Archangel of Air,
Bring the winds of clarity and new beginnings.
By the power of the rising sun,
I open the Eastern Gate.
Hail and welcome!"

Visualize a great yellow tower manifesting in the East, with swirling winds and the archangel Raphael standing before it. See the gate opening.

Light the yellow candle (if using).

Part 4: Invoke the Southern Watchtower (Fire)

Turn to the South. Raise your wand and say:

"Hail, Guardians of the Watchtower of the South,
Powers of Fire!
I call upon you to witness this rite
And guard this sacred circle.
Michael, Archangel of Fire,
Bring the flames of passion and transformation.
By the power of the noonday sun,
I open the Southern Gate.
Hail and welcome!"

Visualize a great red tower with roaring flames and Michael with his flaming sword.

Light the red candle.

Part 5: Invoke the Western Watchtower (Water)

Turn to the West. Raise your cup (or hand) and say:

"Hail, Guardians of the Watchtower of the West,
Powers of Water!
I call upon you to witness this rite
And guard this sacred circle.
Gabriel, Archangel of Water,
Bring the tides of intuition and healing.
By the power of the setting sun,
I open the Western Gate.
Hail and welcome!"

Visualize a great blue tower with cascading waterfalls and Gabriel holding a chalice.

Light the blue candle.

Part 6: Invoke the Northern Watchtower (Earth)

Turn to the North. Raise your pentacle (or hand) and say:

"Hail, Guardians of the Watchtower of the North,
Powers of Earth!
I call upon you to witness this rite
And guard this sacred circle.
Uriel, Archangel of Earth,
Bring the strength of stone and the bounty of harvest.
By the power of the midnight earth,
I open the Northern Gate.
Hail and welcome!"

Visualize a great green tower of living crystal and stone, with Uriel standing firm.

Light the green candle.

Part 7: Acknowledge the Center (Spirit)

Return to the center of your circle. Raise your arms and say:

"Above me, the infinite stars.
Below me, the eternal earth.
Within me, the sacred flame.
Around me, the four watchtowers stand guard.
The circle is cast, the gates are open.
I stand at the center of all worlds.
So mote it be!"

The circle is now fully opened and protected. Proceed with your working.

Closing the Watchtowers

When your ritual is complete, you must close the watchtowers and dismiss the guardians.

Go to each quarter in reverse order (North β†’ West β†’ South β†’ East) and say:

"Guardians of the Watchtower of the [Direction],
Powers of [Element],
I thank you for your presence and protection.
Go in peace, with my blessing.
Hail and farewell!"

Visualize each gate closing and the tower fading.

Extinguish the candles.

Then walk counterclockwise (widdershins) around the circle, visualizing the boundary dissolving:

"The circle is open, but unbroken.
May the peace of the elements remain in my heart.
Merry meet, merry part, and merry meet again!"

Variations and Personalization

The Opening by Watchtower is a template. You can customize it:

  • Use different invocations based on your tradition (Wiccan, Thelemic, eclectic)
  • Call specific elemental beings (sylphs, salamanders, undines, gnomes)
  • Incorporate Enochian calls for more advanced work
  • Add offerings at each quarter (incense for Air, candle for Fire, water for Water, salt for Earth)
  • Invoke deities associated with each element

The core structure remains: acknowledge each direction, invoke its power, visualize the watchtower, and welcome the guardians.

The Power of the Watchtowers

When properly performed, the Opening by Watchtower creates:

  • A sphere of protection that nothing unwanted can penetrate
  • A container for magical energy that amplifies your work
  • A connection to elemental realms and their inhabitants
  • A sacred space between worlds where magic flows freely
  • Witness and support from powerful spiritual allies

You'll feel the differenceβ€”the air becomes charged, the space feels larger, and your awareness expands.

Tips for Effective Practice

Visualize vividly: See the towers, the archangels, the elemental forces. The more real they are in your mind, the more real they become.

Speak with authority: You're not beggingβ€”you're invoking as a magician who has the right to call upon these powers.

Feel the elements: As you invoke each quarter, sense the quality of that element (the breeze of Air, the heat of Fire, the flow of Water, the solidity of Earth).

Always close properly: Never leave the watchtowers open. Always dismiss the guardians with gratitude and respect.

Practice makes perfect: The first few times may feel awkward. Keep going. The ritual becomes more powerful with repetition.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
