Introduction to Orphic Initiation

The Passwords: "I am a child of Earth and starry Heaven" / "I have flown out of the sorrowful, weary wheel" / "I have passed with eager feet to the desired crown."
Purification Rites (Katharmoi)
Initiation begins purification, but it's an ongoing lifelong process. Daily: morning (ritual washing, prayer, hymns, offerings, meditation) and evening (examination of conscience, purification of day's pollution, prayers). Periodic: new moon rites (monthly renewal), major purification ceremonies (annual).
Types of pollution (miasma) to purify: blood pollution (from violence, meat-eating), death pollution (contact with corpses), birth pollution, sexual pollution, moral pollution (sins and crimes).
The Orphic Life
Dietary purity: Vegetarianism (no killing, respect for all life, avoiding blood pollution), no beans (considered impure), no eggs (sacred symbol), simple pure foods.
Ethical purity: Non-violence, truthfulness, justice, compassion, self-control.
Spiritual purity: Meditation and prayer, study of sacred texts, singing the Orphic Hymns, contemplation.
