Part of Fortune in Astrology: Your Luck, Joy & Life Purpose

What Is the Part of Fortune in Astrology?

The Part of Fortune (also called Fortuna or Pars Fortunae) is one of the most ancient and significant points in astrology — not a planet or asteroid, but an Arabic Part: a mathematically calculated sensitive point derived from the relationship between your Sun, Moon, and Ascendant. It has been used in astrological practice for over two thousand years, appearing in Hellenistic, Medieval Arabic, and Renaissance astrology as one of the most important indicators of worldly fortune, joy, and life purpose.

The formula for the Part of Fortune is: Ascendant + Moon − Sun (in a day chart) or Ascendant + Sun − Moon (in a night chart). This calculation integrates the three most personal points in the natal chart — the rising sign (your embodied self), the Moon (your emotional nature), and the Sun (your core identity) — into a single point that describes where and how you are most naturally aligned with fortune, joy, and flourishing.

In the natal chart, the Part of Fortune reveals the area of life where you are most likely to experience genuine happiness, natural abundance, and the feeling of being in flow with your own nature and with life itself. It is not a guarantee of material wealth, but rather a pointer toward the specific quality of experience that makes you feel most alive, most yourself, and most genuinely fortunate.

The Mythology of Fortuna

Fortuna was the Roman goddess of fortune, luck, and fate — one of the most widely worshipped deities in the Roman world. She was depicted with a wheel (the Wheel of Fortune, which she spun to raise some and lower others), a cornucopia (the horn of abundance), and sometimes a rudder (suggesting her role in steering the course of human lives). She was also sometimes depicted blindfolded, suggesting that fortune is distributed without regard to merit or desert.

The Wheel of Fortune — Fortuna's most enduring symbol — encodes the essential Fortuna archetype: the cyclical nature of fortune, the inevitability of both rise and fall, and the wisdom of aligning oneself with the natural flow of fortune rather than fighting against it. In the natal chart, the Part of Fortune shows where your personal wheel of fortune is most naturally aligned with the upswing.

The Part of Fortune and the Lot of Spirit

In traditional astrology, the Part of Fortune has a complementary point called the Lot of Spirit (calculated as Ascendant + Sun − Moon in a day chart, the reverse of the Part of Fortune formula). While the Part of Fortune describes where you find worldly fortune and physical wellbeing, the Lot of Spirit describes where you find spiritual purpose and the expression of your will and intention. Together, they describe the full spectrum of your fortunate life — the material and the spiritual, the received and the expressed.

Working with Your Part of Fortune

• Identify the house and sign — the house shows the life arena of your greatest fortune; the sign shows the quality of experience that brings you most joy
• Invest in this area of life — the Part of Fortune responds to conscious attention and investment. The more you develop the qualities indicated by its sign and house, the more fortune flows
• Notice when you feel most in flow — the Part of Fortune often describes experiences that feel effortless, natural, and genuinely joyful. Pay attention to when life feels most fortunate and look for the Part of Fortune themes in those moments
• Integrate Sun, Moon, and Ascendant — the Part of Fortune is most activated when your identity (Sun), emotional nature (Moon), and embodied self (Ascendant) are working in harmony rather than in conflict

Conclusion: Fortune as Alignment

The Part of Fortune in your natal chart is ultimately a pointer toward alignment — the specific quality of experience that arises when your identity, emotional nature, and embodied self are working in perfect harmony. It is not a guarantee of material wealth or worldly success, but rather a map of the conditions under which you are most naturally in flow with your own nature and with life itself.
