Past Life Regression: Accessing Previous Incarnations

BY NICOLE LAU

What is Past Life Regression?

Past life regression (PLR) is a therapeutic technique that uses hypnosis, deep meditation, or guided visualization to access memories from previous incarnations. Whether you view these experiences as literal past lives, genetic memory, archetypal journeys, or subconscious metaphor, PLR offers profound insights into current life patterns, relationships, fears, and soul purpose.

The Philosophy Behind Past Lives

Reincarnation Across Traditions

Hinduism and Buddhism: Reincarnation is fundamentalβ€”souls cycle through births until achieving liberation (moksha or nirvana).

Ancient Greek Philosophy: Pythagoras, Plato, and others taught metempsychosisβ€”the soul's journey through multiple bodies.

Kabbalah: Jewish mysticism includes gilgulβ€”the soul's reincarnation to complete unfinished spiritual work.

Gnosticism and Early Christianity: Some early Christian sects believed in reincarnation before it was deemed heretical.

Indigenous Traditions: Many cultures worldwide hold beliefs about soul continuity and rebirth.

Modern Perspectives

Therapeutic: Whether literal or symbolic, PLR accesses deep psychological material for healing.

Spiritual: Past lives explain soul contracts, karmic relationships, and life purpose.

Scientific Skepticism: Mainstream science views PLR as imagination, false memory, or cryptomnesia (forgotten memories resurfacing).

Pragmatic: The value lies in the healing and insight gained, regardless of literal truth.

Evidence for Past Lives

Dr. Ian Stevenson's Research

University of Virginia psychiatrist Dr. Ian Stevenson documented over 3,000 cases of children with past life memories. Many included verifiable details about deceased individuals they couldn't have known about through normal means.

Xenoglossy

Cases where people under hypnosis speak languages they've never learned. While rare and controversial, some cases remain unexplained.

Birthmarks and Birth Defects

Stevenson documented cases where birthmarks or defects corresponded to fatal wounds in claimed past lives, sometimes verified through historical records.

Verifiable Details

Some regression subjects provide historically accurate details about obscure time periods, places, or events they had no normal access to.

Alternative Explanations

Skeptics attribute these to cryptomnesia (forgotten memories), genetic memory, collective unconscious, or coincidence. The debate continues.

How Past Life Regression Works

The Hypnotic State

PLR uses deep relaxation and focused attention to access the subconscious mind where past life memories are believed to be stored. You remain aware and in control throughoutβ€”it's not like stage hypnosis.

The Regression Process

  1. Induction: Deep relaxation through progressive muscle relaxation or guided visualization
  2. Deepening: Counting down, descending stairs, or other techniques to deepen the trance
  3. Bridge technique: Following a current issue, emotion, or relationship back to its origin
  4. Past life emergence: Scenes, sensations, or knowings from another lifetime arise
  5. Exploration: Guided questions help you explore the past life experience
  6. Key moments: Birth, significant events, death, and between-life state
  7. Integration: Understanding how the past life relates to current life
  8. Return: Gentle guidance back to present awareness

Methods of Past Life Regression

Professional Hypnotherapy

Best for: First-time explorers, deep trauma work, therapeutic goals

Process: Work with certified PLR therapist who guides you through structured regression

Benefits: Professional guidance, safety, therapeutic integration, recorded session

Finding a practitioner: Look for certifications in hypnotherapy and past life regression, read reviews, trust your intuition

Self-Guided Regression

Best for: Experienced meditators, those comfortable with inner work

Process: Use recorded guided meditations or self-hypnosis techniques

Benefits: Privacy, cost-effective, work at your own pace

Limitations: May not go as deep, harder to process difficult material alone

Meditation and Visualization

Best for: Gentle exploration, spiritual seekers

Process: Deep meditation with intention to access past life information

Benefits: Natural, non-invasive, integrates with existing practice

Spontaneous Recall

Triggers: Visiting certain places, meeting certain people, dreams, dΓ©jΓ  vu

Experience: Sudden knowing, vivid memories, or strong emotional reactions

Integration: Journal and reflect on spontaneous memories

Self-Guided Past Life Regression Technique

Preparation

  • Choose a quiet, comfortable space where you won't be disturbed
  • Set clear intention: "I access past life memories for my highest good"
  • Have journal ready for afterward
  • Allow 45-60 minutes
  • Optional: record yourself reading the script or use a guided meditation

The Process

1. Relaxation (10 minutes)

Lie down comfortably. Close your eyes. Take deep breaths. Progressively relax every muscle from toes to head. Feel yourself sinking deeper with each breath.

2. Deepening (5 minutes)

Visualize descending a beautiful staircase with 10 steps. With each step down, you go deeper into relaxation and expanded awareness. Count down from 10 to 1.

3. The Bridge (5 minutes)

Imagine a door at the bottom of the stairs. Behind this door is a past life that's relevant to your current journey. When you open the door, you'll step into that lifetime.

4. Emergence (20 minutes)

Open the door and step through. Notice:

  • What do you see? (landscape, buildings, time period)
  • Look down at your feetβ€”what are you wearing?
  • Are you male, female, or other?
  • How old are you?
  • What's your name or what are you called?
  • Where are you? What year or time period?
  • What's happening in this moment?
  • Who are the important people in this life?
  • What's your purpose or role?
  • Move to a significant event in this lifetime
  • Move to the final day of this lifeβ€”how do you die?
  • Float above the bodyβ€”what did you learn in this lifetime?

5. Between Lives (5 minutes)

Move to the space between lives. Meet your guides or higher self. Ask: "What was the purpose of this lifetime? How does it relate to my current life?"

6. Return (5 minutes)

Thank your guides. Return through the door, up the staircase, counting from 1 to 10. With each number, become more alert. At 10, open your eyes, fully present.

7. Integration

Immediately journal everything you experienced, felt, saw, or knew. Don't analyze yetβ€”just record.

What to Expect During Regression

Common Experiences

  • Visual scenes: Like watching a movie or being in the scene
  • Knowing without seeing: Information that simply comes to you
  • Emotional intensity: Strong feelings connected to past life events
  • Physical sensations: Feeling injuries, temperature, or body differences
  • Fragmented memories: Pieces rather than complete narratives
  • Symbolic imagery: Metaphorical rather than literal scenes

Levels of Experience

Light trance: Aware of present but accessing past life information

Medium trance: Deeply immersed but can still communicate

Deep trance: Fully experiencing the past life as if living it

Interpreting Past Life Memories

Questions to Ask

  • What patterns from that life appear in my current life?
  • Who from that lifetime is in my current life? (souls often reincarnate together)
  • What unfinished business or lessons carried forward?
  • How does that life's death relate to current fears or issues?
  • What gifts or wisdom can I bring forward from that lifetime?

Common Themes

  • Karmic relationships: Recognizing souls you've known before
  • Repeating patterns: Similar challenges across lifetimes
  • Unfinished lessons: What you're here to complete or heal
  • Talents and affinities: Skills carried across incarnations
  • Phobias and fears: Traced to traumatic past life deaths

Healing Through Past Life Regression

Releasing Trauma

Experiencing and understanding past life trauma can release its hold on your current life. The awareness itself often brings healing.

Forgiveness Work

Understanding the soul perspectiveβ€”that we all play different roles across lifetimesβ€”facilitates forgiveness of self and others.

Reclaiming Power

Recognizing where you gave away power in past lives helps you reclaim it now.

Completing Contracts

Consciously releasing outdated soul contracts or vows from past lives.

Safety and Considerations

Emotional Intensity

Past life memories can be emotionally overwhelming. Work with a professional if you have trauma history or mental health concerns.

False Memories

The mind can create convincing narratives. Hold memories lightlyβ€”focus on healing value rather than literal truth.

Spiritual Bypassing

Don't use past lives to avoid dealing with current life issues. Past life work should complement, not replace, present-life healing.

Ego Inflation

Many people "remember" being famous historical figures. This is often archetypal rather than literal. Stay humble.

Signs You've Lived Before

  • Inexplicable knowledge or skills
  • Strong attraction or aversion to specific time periods or places
  • Recurring dreams of other times or places
  • Instant recognition of certain people
  • Unexplained phobias
  • Feeling like you don't belong in this time
  • DΓ©jΓ  vu experiences
  • Birthmarks or scars with no current-life origin

Integration Practices

  • Journal extensively: Process insights and connections
  • Creative expression: Art, writing, or music inspired by past lives
  • Ritual release: Ceremonies to release past life patterns
  • Therapy integration: Discuss with therapist familiar with PLR
  • Meditation: Continue connecting with past life wisdom

Past life regression opens a window into your soul's eternal journey. Whether you view the experiences as literal past incarnations or symbolic journeys through your psyche, the healing, wisdom, and self-understanding gained are profoundly real. Your soul has walked many pathsβ€”each one contributing to who you are today.

As you explore the memories of other lifetimes, let the Shadow Work Tarot guide you in understanding the patterns that echo through your soul’s journey, while a Blue Moon Audio session can open rare portals to deeper recall under the celestial veil. To anchor these revelations into your present, the 30-Day Tarot Practice Workbook offers daily prompts that weave past-life threads into your current spiritual tapestry, making each insight a stepping stone toward wholeness.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
