Wood
Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is the traditional Norse correspondence for Perthro — the wood from which the original rune lots were carved, the material of the first written records in the Germanic world (the word "book" derives from the Old English word for beech). Beech carries the energy of hidden knowledge made visible, of the mystery that becomes legible when the right eyes look at it. Apple wood is another excellent choice for Perthro — the tree of Idunn's hidden wisdom, of the knowledge that is preserved and revealed in its own time.
Stone
The best stones for Perthro amulets are those that carry the energy of mystery, hidden knowledge, and divinatory ability: labradorite (the stone of magic and the hidden dimensions of reality, its iridescent flash revealing what is concealed), moonstone (the stone of intuition and the hidden cycles of fate), black tourmaline with inclusions (the hidden patterns within the stone mirror the hidden patterns of wyrd), and obsidian (the scrying stone, used for centuries to access hidden knowledge).
The Lot Cup
A small wooden cup or bowl is Perthro's most characteristic material — the lot cup from which the runes were cast. Carve or burn the Perthro rune on the outside of a small wooden cup and use it as both an amulet and a functional divination tool. This is the most direct material expression of Perthro's energy.

Timing
Craft your Perthro amulet at the dark moon — the moment of maximum mystery, when the moon's face is hidden and the hidden dimensions of reality are most accessible. Midnight is ideal. Samhain and the winter solstice are also appropriate — the times when the veil between the known and the unknown is thinnest.
Sacred Space Preparation
Set up your workspace with Perthro's energy: mysterious, liminal, oriented toward the hidden. Place a black or deep purple candle. Have your rune set or other divination tools nearby — Perthro's energy is amplified by the presence of divinatory instruments. Work in near-darkness; Perthro reveals what is hidden in the dark, not what is obvious in the light.
Step 1: Entering the Mystery
Before carving, spend a few minutes in the following practice: hold your hands over the materials you will use and ask: "What is hidden here that wants to be revealed? What pattern of fate is present in this work?" Do not force an answer — simply open to whatever arises. This practice of asking before acting is Perthro's fundamental orientation: the willingness to receive hidden knowledge before imposing your own agenda.
Step 2: Carving the Rune
The Perthro rune (ᛈ) consists of a vertical line with two horizontal, angled extensions pointing to the right — like a cup tilted on its side or a vessel, open and ready to receive whatever fate pours into it. Carve it with a quality of receptive attention — not forcing, but allowing. As you carve, chant the Perthro Galdr: "Perthro, Perthro, Perthro" — let the sound be mysterious, slightly hushed, as if you are speaking of things that are not usually spoken aloud.
Step 3: Coloring the Rune
Color Perthro with black (for the mystery of the unknown, the darkness from which hidden knowledge emerges) or deep purple (for the mystical, the divinatory, the hidden dimensions of reality). As you apply the color, say: "I color this rune with [black/purple], the color of mystery and hidden knowledge. Let it be a vessel for what is concealed, a revealer of what is hidden, a key to the patterns of fate."
Step 4: Activation by Casting
Perthro's activation is unique — it is activated by the act of casting. Place the amulet in a small cup or bowl with a handful of rune lots or other small objects. Shake the cup and cast the contents onto a cloth. Whatever falls closest to the Perthro amulet is the hidden knowledge that Perthro is revealing about the amulet's purpose. Read it intuitively — this is not a formal divination but a conversation with the mystery. Say: "Perthro, I activate you through the act of casting. Let the lots reveal what is hidden. Let the mystery speak."
Step 5: The Secret Name
Give your Perthro amulet a secret name — a word or phrase that captures the specific hidden knowledge or divinatory purpose it is meant to serve. Write this name on a small piece of paper and burn it — the secret name is consumed by fire, becoming part of the amulet's hidden nature. No one else needs to know this name; it is between you and the mystery.
