Perthro Rune Meditation: Entering the Mystery & Reading the Patterns of Fate

By Nicole Lau
Perthro (ᛈ) is the rune of mystery — of the hidden knowledge that lies beneath the surface of events, of the patterns of fate that are woven by the Norns and visible only to those who know how to look. To meditate with Perthro is to enter the mystery: to release the need to know and control, to open to what is hidden, to develop the receptive sensitivity that allows the patterns of wyrd to become visible. This is the meditation of the völva — the Norse seeress who sat in her high seat and opened herself to the hidden knowledge of the cosmos.
This meditation is particularly powerful for: developing divinatory sensitivity and accuracy, accessing hidden knowledge about a specific situation, working with the mystery of fate and synchronicity, releasing the need to control outcomes and opening to what is actually unfolding, and developing the receptive, open quality of awareness that is the foundation of all genuine intuitive work.
Before You Begin
Light a black or deep purple candle. Place your rune set or other divination tools nearby — their presence amplifies Perthro's energy. If you have a Perthro rune stone, hold it in your non-dominant hand — the receiving hand. Work in near-darkness if possible. Have a journal nearby to record what arises — Perthro's revelations are often subtle and easily forgotten if not immediately recorded.
Take three slow breaths, and with each exhale, release a specific form of knowing: first, release what you think you know about your situation. Second, release what you think you want to happen. Third, release what you think you are capable of perceiving. You are entering the mystery; bring nothing with you but open attention.
Part One: The Lot Cup
Close your eyes. In your mind's eye, see a wooden cup — the lot cup of the Norse diviner. It is dark inside, and you cannot see what it contains. This is Perthro's fundamental image: the vessel that holds all possibilities before the moment of casting, when fate reveals which possibility is actual.
Feel yourself as this cup — as a vessel that holds possibilities without yet knowing which will be cast. This is the quality of awareness that Perthro cultivates: the ability to hold multiple possibilities simultaneously without collapsing them prematurely into a single certainty. The cup does not know which lot will fall; it simply holds them all with equal readiness.
Ask yourself: where in my life am I trying to know the outcome before the lots have been cast? Where am I collapsing the mystery prematurely, forcing a certainty that is not yet available? Simply notice — without judgment. Perthro asks for honesty about our relationship to the unknown.
Part Two: The Web of Wyrd
Expand your awareness outward from the lot cup. In your mind's eye, see the web of wyrd — the vast, shimmering web of fate that the Norns weave, that connects all beings and events in a pattern of extraordinary complexity. You are one thread in this web; every person and event in your life is another thread; and the pattern of their intersection is your wyrd.
Look at the web around you. What patterns do you see? What threads are converging toward a particular point? What connections exist between seemingly unrelated events in your life? The web of wyrd is always visible to those who know how to look — it is the pattern of synchronicity, of meaningful coincidence, of the events that seem random but are actually part of a larger design.
Ask Perthro: "What pattern in my wyrd is currently most important for me to see? What hidden connection or hidden knowledge is most relevant to my life right now?" Do not force an answer. Simply hold the question in the web and allow the pattern to become visible.
Part Three: The Hidden Knowledge
From within the web of wyrd, become aware of something that is hidden — a piece of knowledge, a pattern, a truth that has not yet been visible to your ordinary awareness. It may be hidden in a situation you are navigating, in a relationship, in yourself, or in the larger pattern of your life.
Approach it with the receptive attention of the diviner — not grasping, not forcing, but simply opening to what wants to be revealed. Ask: "What hidden knowledge is ready to become visible? What does the mystery want me to know?"
Receive whatever comes — images, feelings, words, sudden knowings. Do not evaluate or analyze what you receive during the meditation; simply receive it and trust that its meaning will become clear. Perthro's revelations often make more sense in retrospect than in the moment of reception.
Part Four: The Casting
In your visualization, take the lot cup and cast its contents onto a cloth before you. Watch the lots fall — each one landing in its particular place, creating a pattern that is both random and fated, both chance and wyrd. This is Perthro's paradox: the cast is random, and yet the pattern it creates is meaningful. Chance and fate are not opposites; they are two faces of the same mystery.
Look at the pattern the lots have created. What does it tell you? What is the shape of the fate that has been revealed? Again — do not force an interpretation. Simply look at the pattern with open, receptive attention and allow its meaning to arise naturally.
Part Five: The Perthro Galdr
With the mystery fully present and the hidden knowledge received, begin the Galdr. Take a slow, quiet breath. On the exhale, chant: "Perrrr-thro" — mysterious, slightly hushed, as if speaking of things that are not usually spoken aloud. The “Per” should be soft and resonant; the “thro” should open slightly, like a door ajar revealing a glimpse of what lies beyond.
Chant nine times. With each repetition, feel your sensitivity to the hidden dimensions of reality increasing — your ability to perceive patterns, to receive hidden knowledge, to work with the mystery of fate becoming more refined and more reliable. By the ninth chant, you may feel a quality of heightened perceptual sensitivity — the feeling of being able to see more than is usually visible.
Part Six: Closing
After the Galdr, sit quietly for a few minutes. Feel the quality of Perthro's awareness — the open, receptive sensitivity of the diviner who has entered the mystery and received its gifts. Let this quality of awareness settle into your body as a reference point for what genuine intuitive perception feels like.
Open your eyes and immediately write down everything you received during the meditation — every image, feeling, word, or knowing, however fragmentary or unclear. Perthro's revelations are precious and easily lost; record them before the ordinary mind reasserts its dominance.
Perthro Meditation for Specific Situations
Before divination: A brief Perthro meditation — just Parts One and Five — before any divination practice opens the channel of hidden knowledge and aligns your awareness with the mystery that divination accesses. This significantly improves the accuracy and depth of any reading.
For hidden knowledge: When you sense that something important is hidden in a situation — that there is more going on than is visible on the surface — perform the full meditation with that specific situation held in mind during Part Three. Perthro's energy is particularly effective at revealing what is deliberately concealed.
For working with synchronicity: When you notice a pattern of meaningful coincidences in your life, perform Part Two of this meditation to see the larger web of wyrd that is producing the synchronicities. Perthro helps you read the pattern rather than just noticing the individual coincidences.
Deepen your Perthro meditation with the Seidr Trance: Norse Shamanic Journey Audio — which guides you into the deep trance states used by the Norse völva for exactly this kind of hidden knowledge work. For the ancestral dimension of Norse divinatory traditions, Ancestral Runes: Viking Lineage Connection Audio connects you with the divinatory wisdom of your Norse ancestors. As you continue to refine your sensitivity to the hidden patterns of wyrd and the mystery that Perthro reveals, the Void Whisper Audio can deepen your access to the subconscious realms where hidden knowledge resides, the Tarot Journaling Prompts offer a structured way to explore the patterns that emerge from your divinatory work, and the 30-Day Tarot Practice Workbook builds the daily discipline needed for sustained intuitive growth. For working with the profound stillness that precedes revelation, the Void of Course Moon Audio provides a sacred pause that mirrors the empty cup of Perthro, and the Blue Moon Audio opens the rare portal where the hidden and the manifest meet.
