This stems from learning that your worth comes from saving others, not from being yourself.
The Path to Recovery
1. Establish Sacred Boundaries
Recovery begins with learning where you end and others begin. Boundaries aren't wallsβthey're the container that holds your wholeness.
Practice: Daily boundary visualization. Close your eyes. Visualize a circle of light around you. This is your sacred space. Practice saying: "This is mine. That is yours. I can care without absorbing."
When you feel yourself merging, pause. Place your hand on your heart. Ask: "Is this feeling mine, or did I absorb it?" Return to your center.
2. Ground in Present Reality
Fantasy is beautiful, but healing happens in reality. Recovery means learning to be present even when it's uncomfortable.
Practice: 5-4-3-2-1 grounding. Name 5 things you see, 4 you hear, 3 you touch, 2 you smell, 1 you taste. This anchors you in present reality when you want to escape.

Practice: When helplessness arises, ask: "What power do I have here? What action can I take, even if it's small?" Take one tiny step. Build your sense of agency gradually.

4. Save Yourself First
You can't pour from an empty cup. Recovery means learning that self-care isn't selfishβit's essential.
Practice: Before helping others, check in: "Am I resourced? Is this from overflow or depletion?" Practice saying: "I can't help right now. I need to care for myself first."
Notice that taking care of yourself doesn't make you selfishβit makes you sustainable.

Ocean Boundary Ritual: Visualize yourself as the oceanβvast, deep, powerful. Now visualize your boundaries as a sacred shoreline. You contain the ocean; you are not dissolved by it. Speak: "I am both infinite and contained. I honor my edges."
Feet on Earth: When you feel yourself dissociating or merging, stand barefoot on earth. Feel the solid ground. Wiggle your toes. You are here. You are embodied. You are separate and whole.
Journaling Prompts:
- Where do I lose myself in others? What am I avoiding by merging?
- What reality am I escaping? What would happen if I stayed present?
- When do I play victim? What power am I avoiding claiming?
- How do I abandon myself while saving others? What would self-care look like?
