Planetary Aspects: The Complete Guide to Conjunction, Opposition, Trine, Square, and Sextile
Share
If the planets in your birth chart are the characters in your story, the aspects between them are the relationships between those characters. A planet in isolation has potential. A planet in aspect to another planet has a dynamic, a tension or a harmony, a conversation that shapes how both energies express in your life.
Aspects are the geometric angles formed between two planets as seen from Earth. When two planets are 90 degrees apart, they form a square. When they are 120 degrees apart, they form a trine. Each angle carries a specific quality of interaction, and learning to read aspects is one of the most important skills in astrological interpretation.
How Aspects Work
Aspects are measured in degrees of the zodiac circle (360 degrees total). The major aspects divide the circle by whole numbers: the conjunction divides by 1 (0 degrees), the opposition by 2 (180 degrees), the trine by 3 (120 degrees), the square by 4 (90 degrees), and the sextile by 6 (60 degrees).
Each aspect has an orb, a range of degrees within which the aspect is considered active. A tight orb (within 1 to 2 degrees) produces a more intense and focused expression. A wider orb (up to 8 to 10 degrees for major aspects) produces a softer, more background influence.
The Conjunction (0 Degrees)
The conjunction is the most powerful aspect. Two planets at the same degree of the zodiac merge their energies completely. The result is a fusion, an intensification of both planetary principles operating as a single unified force in your chart.
Conjunctions are neither inherently easy nor difficult. Their quality depends entirely on the planets involved. A Sun-Jupiter conjunction produces expansive, confident, generous energy. A Sun-Saturn conjunction produces serious, disciplined, sometimes heavy energy. A Venus-Mars conjunction fuses love and desire into passionate, magnetic energy.
In transit, a conjunction is the most direct and powerful activation possible. When a transiting planet conjuncts a natal planet, the themes of both planets are fully activated and merged in your experience.
The Opposition (180 Degrees)
The opposition places two planets directly across the zodiac from each other. This creates a polarity, a tension between two principles that seem to pull in opposite directions but are actually two ends of the same spectrum.
Oppositions often manifest as external tension, through relationships, circumstances, or events that seem to be in conflict with your intentions. The resolution of an opposition requires integration: finding the middle ground between the two poles rather than choosing one and suppressing the other.
A Sun-Moon opposition in the natal chart (born at a Full Moon) creates a fundamental tension between the conscious self (Sun) and the emotional needs (Moon) that requires ongoing integration. A Venus-Saturn opposition creates tension between the desire for love and connection (Venus) and the fear of limitation and rejection (Saturn).
The Square (90 Degrees)
The square is the most challenging of the major aspects. Two planets at 90 degrees are in a state of friction, each pushing against the other in a way that creates pressure, frustration, and the demand for action and resolution.
Squares are not bad. They are the aspects that produce the most growth, because they cannot be ignored. A trine allows energy to flow so easily that it can be taken for granted. A square demands that you do something with the tension it creates. People with many squares in their natal charts are often highly motivated, driven, and accomplished, precisely because the internal friction pushes them to act.
A Mars-Saturn square creates tension between the desire to act boldly (Mars) and the fear of failure or the demand for caution (Saturn). Working with this aspect requires learning to act with both courage and strategic patience. A Sun-Pluto square creates tension between the conscious identity (Sun) and the transformative, sometimes destructive force of Pluto, producing intense drive for power and transformation.
The Trine (120 Degrees)
The trine is the most harmonious of the major aspects. Two planets at 120 degrees flow together naturally, their energies complementing and supporting each other without friction or effort.
Trines represent natural gifts, areas where energy flows easily and talent comes naturally. The challenge of trines is that they can be taken for granted. Because the energy flows so easily, there is less motivation to develop it consciously. People with many trines in their charts often have abundant natural gifts that they may not fully develop because they have never had to work hard for them.
A Venus-Jupiter trine produces natural abundance, generosity, and social grace. A Sun-Moon trine produces emotional harmony and a natural alignment between the conscious self and the emotional body. A Mercury-Uranus trine produces brilliant, innovative thinking that arrives as sudden insight.
The Sextile (60 Degrees)
The sextile is a harmonious aspect similar to the trine but less powerful and more requiring of conscious activation. Two planets at 60 degrees offer opportunity and potential that must be actively engaged to manifest.
If the trine is a gift that arrives without effort, the sextile is an opportunity that knocks but requires you to open the door. Sextiles represent areas of natural talent and ease that become genuinely productive when consciously developed and applied.
The Minor Aspects
Beyond the five major aspects, astrology recognizes several minor aspects that add nuance to chart interpretation. The quincunx (150 degrees) creates an awkward, adjustment-requiring relationship between two planets that have nothing in common by element or modality. The semi-square (45 degrees) and sesquiquadrate (135 degrees) are minor tension aspects. The quintile (72 degrees) and biquintile (144 degrees) relate to creative talent and unique gifts.
Reading Aspects in Your Chart
Start with the Major Aspects
Focus first on conjunctions, oppositions, squares, trines, and sextiles. These are the primary dynamics shaping your chart. Look for planets that form multiple aspects to other planets, as these are the most active and influential points in your chart.
Look for Aspect Patterns
When three or more planets form aspects to each other, they create aspect patterns with specific names and meanings. A Grand Trine (three planets in trine to each other) creates a closed circuit of flowing energy. A T-Square (two planets in opposition with a third squaring both) creates intense, focused tension seeking resolution through the planet at the apex. A Grand Cross (four planets in two oppositions and four squares) creates the most intense configuration of challenge and growth.
Apply Aspects to Transits
The same aspect principles apply to transits. A transiting planet forming a trine to your natal Sun brings easy, flowing solar energy. A transiting planet forming a square to your natal Moon brings emotional friction and the demand for inner work. Understanding the aspect quality of a transit tells you not just what is being activated but how it is being activated.

Aspects as the Grammar of Astrology
If the planets are the vocabulary of astrology, the aspects are the grammar. They determine how the words relate to each other, whether they flow together or create friction, whether they amplify or complicate each other. A chart without aspects would be a list of isolated words. A chart with aspects is a living sentence, a dynamic story of how your various inner forces interact, conflict, support, and ultimately integrate into the complex, multidimensional person you are.
Explore the complete Planetary Meditations series to develop a direct energetic relationship with each planet and learn to feel the quality of their interactions in your own energy field. The grammar of the sky becomes most meaningful when we learn to embody the specific qualities of those angular relationships. Working with the Cosmic Alignment Ritual Kit helps anchor these celestial dynamics into daily practice, while the 13 New Moon Rituals offers a structured way to work with lunar aspects as they unfold each month. For those drawn to the deeper patterns of tension and harmony, the 40 Manifestation Rituals weaves aspect awareness into intentional creation, and the Sacred Space Cleanse clears the energetic field so these influences can be felt clearly.
