Planetary Magic: Working with the 7 Classical Planets

Planetary Magic: Working with the 7 Classical Planets

BY NICOLE LAU

Planetary magic is one of the most versatile and powerful systems in ceremonial practice. By working with the seven classical planets—Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn—you tap into archetypal forces that have shaped human consciousness for millennia.

Each planet governs specific energies, intentions, and areas of life. Learn to work with them, and you have a complete magical toolkit for nearly any situation.

Why the Seven Classical Planets?

In ancient and medieval astrology, the "planets" were the seven celestial bodies visible to the naked eye that moved against the fixed stars: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.

These weren't just astronomical objects—they were living intelligences, divine forces that influenced everything from weather to human temperament to the rise and fall of kingdoms.

Modern ceremonial magic inherited this system from Hermetic, Qabalistic, and astrological traditions, and it remains the foundation of planetary work today.

How to Work with Planetary Magic

1. Choose the Right Planet for Your Goal

Match your intention to the planetary energy:

  • Need confidence? → Sun
  • Want to develop intuition? → Moon
  • Signing a contract? → Mercury
  • Attracting love? → Venus
  • Need courage? → Mars
  • Seeking abundance? → Jupiter
  • Banishing negativity? → Saturn

2. Time Your Work

Planetary magic is most powerful when performed on the planet's day and hour. (See our article on Planetary Hours for detailed timing.)

Minimum: Work on the planet's day (e.g., Venus magic on Friday)
Better: Work during the planet's hour on its day
Best: Work during the planet's hour, on its day, when the planet is well-placed in the sky

3. Use Planetary Correspondences

Layer your ritual with the planet's correspondences:

  • Candle: Use the planet's color
  • Incense: Burn the planet's incense
  • Crystal: Place the planet's stone on your altar
  • Symbol: Draw the planetary symbol or sigil
  • Invocation: Call upon the planet's archangel or intelligence

4. Invoke the Planetary Force

You can invoke a planet through:

  • The Greater Ritual of the Hexagram (advanced)
  • Simple invocation: "I call upon the power of [Planet], [Archangel], bring me [intention]!"
  • Meditation: Visualize the planet's color and energy filling you
  • Talismans: Create a charged object with the planet's seal

5. Ground and Close

After planetary work, always ground yourself and thank the planetary intelligence. Perform the LBRP to close the working.

Planetary Magic in Practice: Examples

Example 1: Jupiter Prosperity Spell

When: Thursday, during Jupiter's hour
Setup: Blue candle, cedar incense, amethyst crystal
Method:

  1. Perform the LBRP
  2. Light the blue candle and incense
  3. Draw Jupiter's symbol (♃) on a piece of paper
  4. Hold the amethyst and say: "Tzadkiel, Archangel of Jupiter, bring expansion and abundance into my life. Open the doors of opportunity. So mote it be."
  5. Meditate on the feeling of abundance
  6. Let the candle burn down (or snuff it and relight on subsequent Thursdays)
  7. Carry the amethyst as a talisman

Example 2: Mars Protection Ritual

When: Tuesday, during Mars' hour
Setup: Red candle, dragon's blood incense, garnet or bloodstone
Method:

  1. Perform the LBRP
  2. Light the red candle and incense
  3. Hold the stone and visualize a shield of red fire around you
  4. Say: "Kamael, Archangel of Mars, grant me your strength and protection. Let no harm come to me. I am shielded by the warrior's flame."
  5. Carry the stone for ongoing protection

The Planetary Ladder

In Qabalistic magic, the seven planets correspond to the seven lower Sephiroth on the Tree of Life, forming a "ladder" from the material world (Saturn/Binah) to the Higher Self (Sun/Tiphareth):

  • Saturn (Binah): Structure, limitation, the threshold
  • Jupiter (Chesed): Expansion, mercy, abundance
  • Mars (Geburah): Strength, severity, action
  • Sun (Tiphareth): The Higher Self, beauty, harmony
  • Venus (Netzach): Love, victory, emotion
  • Mercury (Hod): Intellect, communication, magic
  • Moon (Yesod): The astral, foundation, dreams

Working with the planets in sequence is a form of spiritual ascent.
