The Principle of Mentalism: All is Mind

BY NICOLE LAU

The Principle of Mentalism: All is Mind

"THE ALL IS MIND; The Universe is Mental."

This is the first and most fundamental of the Seven Hermetic Principles. It's the foundation upon which all other principles rest.

And it's the most radical statement in all of mysticism: Everything - the entire universe, all matter, all energy, all experience - is mental. Consciousness is primary. Mind creates reality.

This is your complete guide to the Principle of Mentalism.

What "All is Mind" Actually Means

Layer 1: The Universe is a Mental Creation

The universe is not a dead mechanical system that somehow produced consciousness. Consciousness came first. The universe is a thought in the Mind of THE ALL (God, Source, Universal Consciousness).

Everything that exists - stars, planets, atoms, your body, your thoughts - is mental in nature. It's all happening within Universal Mind.

You're not a body that has consciousness. You're consciousness that has a body.

Layer 2: Your Mind Creates Your Reality

On the individual level, your personal mind creates your personal reality.

Your thoughts, beliefs, and mental states don't just reflect reality - they create it. Your outer world is a projection of your inner mental world.

This isn't metaphor. This is how reality operates.

Layer 3: Matter is Condensed Mind

What we call "matter" is actually mind/consciousness vibrating at a very low, dense frequency. Spirit and matter aren't separate - matter is just spirit slowed down.

Everything is mental energy at different rates of vibration. A rock is mind vibrating slowly. A thought is mind vibrating quickly. But it's all mind.

The ALL: Universal Mind

THE ALL is the Hermetic term for the infinite, eternal, unchanging consciousness that contains everything.

THE ALL is:

  • Infinite: No boundaries, no limits
  • Eternal: No beginning, no end
  • Unchanging: The constant behind all change
  • Mental: Pure consciousness, pure mind

The universe exists within the Mind of THE ALL. We exist within the Mind of THE ALL. We are thoughts in the Universal Mind.

And because we are part of THE ALL, we share in its creative power. We are THE ALL experiencing itself through individual perspectives.

Mentalism in Modern Science

Quantum Physics: Consciousness Affects Matter

The observer effect in quantum mechanics: the act of observation affects what is observed. Consciousness literally changes physical reality.

The double-slit experiment shows that particles behave differently when observed versus when not observed. Mind affects matter at the quantum level.

This is Mentalism validated by physics.

Neuroscience: Your Brain Creates Your Reality

Your brain doesn't passively receive reality - it actively constructs it. Color, sound, taste, smell - all mental constructions.

You're not experiencing "the world." You're experiencing your brain's mental model of the world. Reality is a mental simulation.

Placebo Effect: Mind Over Matter

The placebo effect proves mind creates physical reality. Belief alone can:

  • Heal diseases
  • Reduce pain
  • Improve physical performance
  • Change brain chemistry

Your mental state directly affects your physical state. Mind is primary.

How to Use the Principle of Mentalism

1. Recognize You Are Not Your Thoughts

If "All is Mind," then you are the mind that has thoughts, not the thoughts themselves.

Practice:

  • Observe your thoughts like clouds passing in the sky
  • Notice: "I am having the thought that..." (not "I am this thought")
  • You are the awareness behind the thoughts
  • This gives you power to choose which thoughts to keep

2. Choose Your Thoughts Consciously

If your mind creates your reality, then choosing your thoughts is choosing your reality.

Practice:

  • Morning: Set 3 intentional thoughts for the day
  • Throughout day: Notice automatic thoughts, replace with chosen thoughts
  • Evening: Review - which thoughts created which experiences?
  • Track in Hermetic Principles Journal

3. Mental Transmutation

Since everything is mental, you can change anything by changing your mental state.

Practice:

  1. Identify unwanted mental state (fear, anger, lack)
  2. Recognize it's mental energy, not fixed reality
  3. Transmute it by shifting mental focus
  4. Hold new mental state until it manifests externally

4. Visualization as Reality Creation

If the universe is mental, then mental images are real. Visualization isn't pretending - it's creating in the mental realm first.

Practice:

  • Create detailed mental image of desired reality
  • Make it vivid - see, hear, feel, smell, taste
  • Hold it consistently - this is the mental blueprint
  • Physical reality will conform to mental reality (see Correspondence)

Mentalism in Daily Life

Morning: Set Your Mental State

Your first thoughts set the mental tone for your entire day.

  • Before checking phone, choose your mental state
  • "Today I am calm, capable, and creative"
  • Hold this mental state as you move through your day

At Work: Mental Mastery

  • Stressful situation? Change your mental interpretation of it
  • The situation is neutral - your mind assigns meaning
  • Choose empowering mental frames

In Relationships: Mind the Mind

  • Others respond to your mental state, not just your words
  • Approach with mental state of love - receive love back
  • Approach with mental state of suspicion - receive defensiveness
  • Your mind creates the relational reality

Common Questions About Mentalism

Q: If it's all mental, is the physical world an illusion?

A: The physical world is real - but it's mental in nature. It's not an illusion, it's a mental creation. Just like a dream is real while you're dreaming, physical reality is real - and it's mental.

Q: Can I create anything with my mind?

A: You're always creating with your mind - the question is whether you're doing it consciously or unconsciously. Conscious mental creation (working with all Seven Principles) is manifestation.

Q: What about things outside my control?

A: You can't control everything, but you can control your mental response to everything. And your mental response creates your experience of reality.

Q: Is this the same as "positive thinking"?

A: No. Positive thinking is surface-level. Mentalism is recognizing that consciousness is the fundamental nature of reality. It's ontology, not just psychology.

Mentalism and the Other Principles

Mentalism is the foundation. The other six principles describe how mind operates:

  • Correspondence: Mind manifests at every level (as above, so below)
  • Vibration: Mind vibrates at different frequencies
  • Polarity: Mind experiences opposites
  • Rhythm: Mind moves in cycles
  • Cause and Effect: Mind creates causes that produce effects
  • Gender: Mind contains both masculine and feminine principles

All principles are aspects of how Universal Mind operates.

Advanced Mentalism: You Are THE ALL

The deepest truth of Mentalism:

You are not separate from THE ALL. You are THE ALL experiencing itself through an individual perspective.

Your individual mind is a focal point within Universal Mind. You are THE ALL, temporarily forgetting itself to experience individuality.

When you realize this, you realize you have the creative power of THE ALL within you.

Mentalism Practice: The Mental Diet

For 7 days, practice strict mental discipline:

  1. Monitor every thought - become aware of your mental content
  2. Reject negative thoughts - don't fight them, just don't feed them
  3. Choose empowering thoughts - consciously select what you think
  4. Observe results - watch how your reality shifts

This is mental bodybuilding. You're training your mind to be a conscious creator.

The Power and Responsibility of Mentalism

If "All is Mind," then:

  • You are responsible for your mental state
  • You are responsible for what you create with your mind
  • You have the power to change your reality by changing your mind
  • You are not a victim of circumstances - you are a creator of circumstances

This is both empowering and sobering. You have immense creative power. Use it wisely.

You Are Mind

You are not a body with a mind. You are mind with a body.

You are not in the universe. The universe is in your consciousness.

You are not separate from THE ALL. You are THE ALL, experiencing itself as you.

All is Mind. And you are that Mind, creating your reality with every thought.

Deepen your understanding of Mentalism and all Seven Hermetic Principles with our Hermetic Principles Journal and Seven Hermetic Principles Tapestry.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
