Protection Oil and Banishing Oil: Magical Oil Recipes for Shielding and Clearing

Oil is the oldest medium of magic. Before the crystal, before the candle, before the elaborate ritual system β€” there was oil, pressed from seed and berry and bark, anointed on the body, the door, the threshold, the sacred object, in every culture across human history that has understood the relationship between intention and matter. The Egyptians anointed their gods and their dead. The Hebrews anointed their kings and their altars. The Greeks anointed their athletes and their heroes. The Romans, the Celts, the Vedic practitioners, the indigenous traditions of every continent β€” all have used intentionally prepared oil as the medium through which intention is concentrated, transferred, and made physically real in the world. These two foundational blends are among the oldest and most widely used in the magical tradition: the protective oil that creates a shield around the practitioner and their space, and the banishing oil that clears what needs to be removed before the protection can be fully established.

Protection Oil: The Shield Blend

Purpose: To create a protective energetic boundary around the body, the home, or any person or object that needs shielding from negative energy, harmful intentions, or psychic disturbance.

Essential oil formula (per 10ml carrier):

  • Frankincense: 4 drops β€” the foundational protective and purifying resin, used in protective contexts across Egyptian, Christian, and folk magic traditions
  • Black pepper: 3 drops β€” fiercely protective, the spice that drives away what should not be present
  • Juniper: 3 drops β€” the cleansing and protective evergreen, deeply traditional in European protective magic
  • Cedarwood: 2 drops β€” the ancient protective wood, grounding and stabilizing the shield

Carrier oil: Jojoba (the most shelf-stable and skin-safe carrier) or fractionated coconut oil for body application; olive oil for candle and object anointing.

Botanical additions: A small black tourmaline chip or a pinch of sea salt in the bottle; dried rosemary or a small piece of dried juniper berry.

Best time to make: Saturday (Saturn rules protection) or the full moon. A waning moon is also appropriate for strengthening boundaries.

How to use: Anoint the body at the wrists, temples, and back of the neck before entering situations that feel energetically draining or potentially hostile. Anoint the four corners of a room or home. Draw a protective line across doorways and windowsills. Anoint candles for protection spellwork, moving from the center of the candle outward toward each end.

Banishing Oil: The Clearing Blend

Purpose: To clear, remove, and send away what should not be present β€” stagnant energy, unwanted influence, harmful patterns, intrusive presences, or situations that need to end.

Essential oil formula (per 10ml carrier):

  • Clove: 4 drops β€” the most powerfully banishing oil in the magical tradition, used to drive away and end what must go
  • Black pepper: 3 drops β€” adding its fierce clearing energy to clove's banishing power
  • Lemon: 3 drops β€” the purifying citrus that cuts through stagnation and lifts what has become heavy

Carrier oil: Olive oil (traditional for clearing work) or castor oil (the oil of endings and removing obstacles).

Botanical additions: A pinch of black salt, a small piece of black obsidian chip, dried lemon peel.

Best time to make: The waning moon, particularly the last quarter, as energy decreases and endings are supported. Saturday for Saturn's authority over banishing and endings.

How to use: Banishing oil is applied differently from other oils β€” anoint moving away from the body (outward from the center), or moving from inside to outside (toward the door, toward the window, toward the exit) to direct the banishing energy away. Anoint candles from the wick toward the base for sending away. Apply to paper on which the unwanted thing has been named, then burn the paper. Wipe down thresholds to clear what has entered and should leave.

Safety note: Clove essential oil is a skin sensitizer β€” do not apply undiluted, keep the dilution at 1% or below for skin application, and avoid sensitive areas. Test on a small area first.
