BY NICOLE LAU
Qigong (气功) is the ancient Chinese practice of cultivating and circulating qi (life force energy) through gentle movement, breath, and intention. It's moving meditation that harmonizes body, breath, and mind. This is the accessible path to energy cultivation and vibrant health.
What Is Qigong?
Qigong means "energy work" or "cultivating life force." It combines movement (slow, flowing, intentional), breath (deep, natural, coordinated), intention (focused awareness and visualization), and stillness (standing meditation and inner quiet).
Benefits of Qigong
Increased energy and vitality, improved health and immunity, stress reduction and emotional balance, better flexibility and balance, enhanced mental clarity, spiritual cultivation, and longevity.
The Three Regulations
1. Regulate the Body: Proper posture and alignment, relaxed yet upright, rooted to earth and reaching to heaven, smooth flowing movements.
2. Regulate the Breath: Natural deep breathing into lower abdomen, coordinate breath with movement, smooth even and quiet.
3. Regulate the Mind: Focused awareness, present moment attention, calm clear intention, letting go of thoughts.
Basic Qigong Posture - Standing Meditation
The Posture: Feet shoulder-width apart and parallel, knees slightly bent not locked, pelvis tucked slightly with spine straight, shoulders relaxed with arms hanging naturally, crown of head lifting toward heaven, chin slightly tucked, tongue touching roof of mouth, eyes soft gazing forward or closed.
The Practice: Stand for 5-20 minutes, breathe naturally into lower abdomen, feel rooted to earth and connected to heaven, relax into the posture, cultivate stillness within movement.
Essential Qigong Movements
1. Lifting the Sky
Inhale and raise arms slowly in front with palms up, continue lifting overhead. Exhale and lower arms to sides with palms down. Repeat 8-12 times. Opens chest, lifts energy, connects to heaven.
2. Pushing Mountains
Stand with arms at chest and palms facing out. Inhale and draw hands back to chest. Exhale and push palms forward slowly, feeling resistance as if pushing mountains. Repeat 8-12 times. Builds strength, releases tension, grounds energy.
3. Scooping the Sea
Inhale and bend forward, scoop hands down and back. Exhale and rise up, lifting hands overhead, then lower arms to sides. Repeat 8-12 times. Stretches spine, circulates qi, energizes.
4. Separating Heaven and Earth
Stand with hands at chest and palms together. Inhale as one hand pushes up and one pushes down, stretching between heaven and earth. Exhale and return hands to center. Alternate sides, repeat 8-12 times. Balances yin and yang, stretches body, opens meridians.
5. Drawing the Bow
Stand with feet wide. Inhale and draw imaginary bow to one side, one arm extends while one pulls back. Exhale, release, and return to center. Alternate sides, repeat 8-12 times. Opens chest, strengthens arms, focuses intention.
Basic Qigong Breathing
Abdominal Breathing: Inhale and belly expands, exhale and belly contracts. Natural not forced, breath is smooth and quiet.
Reverse Breathing (Advanced): Inhale and belly contracts, exhale and belly expands. Draws qi deeper. Only after mastering abdominal breathing.
A Simple Daily Qigong Routine (15-20 minutes)
- Standing Meditation (5 min): Root and center
- Lifting the Sky (2 min): Open and energize
- Pushing Mountains (2 min): Build and ground
- Scooping the Sea (2 min): Circulate qi
- Separating Heaven and Earth (2 min): Balance
- Drawing the Bow (2 min): Focus and strengthen
- Closing (5 min): Gather qi in lower dantian
Qigong Principles
Slow and Smooth: Movements are slow, continuous, flowing like water. No jerking or forcing.
Soft and Relaxed: Use minimum effort. Relax into the movements. Softness contains power.
Natural and Effortless: Don't force breath or movement. Follow natural rhythms. Wu wei in motion.
Mind Leads Qi: Where attention goes, qi flows. Intention guides energy.
Common Experiences
Warmth in hands, lower abdomen, or throughout body. Tingling in palms or along meridians. Heaviness or lightness, feeling grounded or floating. Energy flow sensations of qi moving. Deep peace and calm centered state.
Tips for Practice
- Practice daily, even if just 10 minutes
- Morning is ideal (yang energy rising)
- Practice outdoors when possible (connect with nature's qi)
- Wear comfortable, loose clothing
- Practice on empty stomach or 2 hours after eating
- Be patient—benefits accumulate over time
Qigong vs. Tai Chi
Qigong: Simpler movements, focus on energy cultivation, easier to learn, more meditative.
Tai Chi: Complex forms, martial art foundation, longer sequences, more physical.
Both cultivate qi. Qigong is more accessible for beginners.
Medical Qigong
Specific practices for health conditions: Liver Qigong for anger and eye issues, Heart Qigong for anxiety and circulation, Kidney Qigong for fear and vitality, Lung Qigong for grief and immunity.
When to Avoid or Modify
During acute illness (rest instead), immediately after surgery (wait for healing), during menstruation (gentler practice), if pregnant (consult teacher for modifications).
Finding a Teacher
