The Qingming altar honors ancestors, creating sacred space for filial piety, family continuity, and communication between living and dead.
Essential Altar Components
1. Ancestor Photos and Tablets
Photos: Images of deceased family members, arranged by generation
Tablets: Traditional wooden tablets with ancestors' names
2. Willow Branches
Fresh Willow: Symbolizing vitality and protection
Placement: In vase on altar or hung above
3. Food Offerings
Favorites: Ancestors' preferred dishes
Fresh Fruit: Apples, oranges, seasonal fruits
Tea/Wine: Beverages for ancestors
Qingtuan: Traditional green rice balls
4. Incense and Candles
Incense: Creating connection between realms
Red Candles: Life force and respect
5. Flowers
Chrysanthemums: Traditional Chinese grave flowers
Fresh Blooms: Spring flowers honoring renewal
Building Your Qingming Altar
- Choose prominent, respectful location
- Lay clean altar cloth
- Place ancestor photos/tablets centrally
