Quantum Physics and the Hermetic Axiom: "As Above, So Below"

BY NICOLE LAU

"That which is above is like that which is below, and that which is below is like that which is above, to accomplish the miracle of the One Thing."

This line from the Emerald Tabletβ€”attributed to Hermes Trismegistus and written sometime between 400-800 CEβ€”is the foundational axiom of Hermetic philosophy.

For centuries, it was interpreted as mystical poetry: the macrocosm reflects the microcosm, heaven mirrors earth, the universe is a hologram of divine mind.

Beautiful metaphor. Inspiring symbolism. Unprovable mysticism.

Then came quantum mechanics.

And physicists discovered that reality actually works this way: patterns repeat across scales, the observer and observed are inseparable, the part contains information about the whole, and the fundamental structure of matter mirrors the fundamental structure of cosmos.

"As above, so below" isn't poetry. It's physics.

The Hermetic Axiom Decoded

Let's parse what the Emerald Tablet actually claims:

"That which is above is like that which is below"
Claim: Patterns at large scales (cosmic, macroscopic) correspond to patterns at small scales (quantum, microscopic).

"That which is below is like that which is above"
Claim: The correspondence works both waysβ€”studying the small reveals the large, studying the large reveals the small.

"To accomplish the miracle of the One Thing"
Claim: This correspondence exists because reality is fundamentally unifiedβ€”different scales are expressions of the same underlying principles.

This is a testable hypothesis. Does reality actually exhibit self-similar patterns across scales? Do the same laws govern atoms and galaxies? Is there genuine correspondence between micro and macro?

Modern physics answers: Yes. Absolutely. Precisely.

Fractal Self-Similarity: The Mathematical Proof

In 1975, Benoit Mandelbrot formalized fractal geometryβ€”the mathematics of self-similar patterns that repeat at different scales.

A fractal is a pattern where each part resembles the whole. Zoom in on a fractal, and you see the same structure. Zoom out, same structure. The pattern is scale-invariant.

Nature is fractal:

β€’ Coastlines: The jaggedness looks similar whether you measure in kilometers or centimeters
β€’ Trees: Branch structure repeats from trunk to twig
β€’ Rivers: Drainage patterns look identical from satellite view to close-up
β€’ Lungs: Bronchial branching repeats at multiple scales
β€’ Blood vessels: Capillary networks mirror arterial networks
β€’ Mountains: Rocky texture looks similar at all scales
β€’ Clouds: Turbulent structure repeats from kilometers to meters

This is "as above, so below" expressed mathematically. The large-scale pattern (above) mirrors the small-scale pattern (below).

But it goes deeper than visual similarity. The same mathematical equations describe patterns at vastly different scales.

The Same Laws at All Scales

Gravity: From Atoms to Galaxies

Newton's law of gravitation: F = G(m₁mβ‚‚)/rΒ²

This equation works for:

β€’ Electrons orbiting atomic nuclei (quantum scale)
β€’ Moons orbiting planets
β€’ Planets orbiting stars
β€’ Stars orbiting galactic centers
β€’ Galaxies in clusters

The same inverse-square law governs attraction across 40 orders of magnitude in scale. As above (galaxies), so below (atoms).

Spiral Patterns: Galaxies and Shells

The logarithmic spiral defined by r = ae^(bΞΈ) appears in:

β€’ Spiral galaxies (hundreds of thousands of light-years)
β€’ Hurricane systems (hundreds of kilometers)
β€’ Nautilus shells (centimeters)
β€’ DNA double helix (nanometers)
β€’ Electron probability clouds (picometers)

The same mathematical form manifests across 25 orders of magnitude. The cosmic spiral (above) mirrors the quantum spiral (below).

Wave Patterns: Light and Matter

Wave equations describe:

β€’ Electromagnetic radiation (light waves)
β€’ Sound propagation
β€’ Water waves
β€’ Quantum probability waves
β€’ Gravitational waves

The mathematics is identical. Waves behave the same way whether they're cosmic gravitational ripples or quantum probability amplitudes.

Quantum Mechanics: The Observer and Observed

The Hermetic tradition claims that consciousness and matter are unifiedβ€”that the observer affects the observed, that mind and world are inseparable.

Classical physics rejected this. The universe is a machine. Observation doesn't affect reality. Consciousness is irrelevant to physics.

Then quantum mechanics discovered the observer effect.

The Double-Slit Experiment

When electrons pass through two slits without observation, they create an interference patternβ€”behaving as waves.

When you observe which slit an electron passes through, the interference pattern disappearsβ€”they behave as particles.

The act of observation changes the outcome. The observer and observed are not separate.

This isn't measurement error. It's fundamental to reality. Quantum systems exist in superposition (multiple states simultaneously) until observed, at which point they "collapse" into a definite state.

The Hermetic axiom claims reality is participatoryβ€”consciousness and cosmos are unified. Quantum mechanics confirms it.

Entanglement: Non-Local Connection

Hermetic philosophy claims "all is one"β€”that everything is fundamentally interconnected.

Quantum entanglement proves this. When two particles become entangled, measuring one instantly affects the other, regardless of distance. Change the spin of one electron, and its entangled partner changes instantaneouslyβ€”even if it's on the other side of the universe.

Einstein called this "spooky action at a distance" and thought it disproved quantum mechanics. But experiments confirm it's real.

Particles that have interacted remain connected in ways that transcend space and time. The universe is non-locally unifiedβ€”exactly as Hermetic philosophy claimed.

Holographic Principle: The Part Contains the Whole

The Emerald Tablet states: "The One Thing" manifests at all scales. Each part contains information about the whole.

This sounds mystical. But modern physics has discovered the holographic principle.

Holography in Physics

A hologram is an image where each part contains information about the whole. Cut a holographic plate in half, and each half still contains the complete image (at lower resolution).

Physicist David Bohm proposed that the universe itself is holographicβ€”each region of space contains information about the entire universe.

String theory and quantum gravity research support this. The holographic principle states that all information contained in a volume of space can be encoded on its boundary surface.

This means the 3D universe we experience might be a projection from a 2D information surfaceβ€”like a hologram. And like a hologram, each part contains information about the whole.

"As above, so below" taken to its logical conclusion: the microcosm contains the macrocosm.

Fractals as Holograms

Fractals are geometric holograms. Each part of a fractal contains a compressed version of the whole pattern.

Zoom into the Mandelbrot set, and you find infinite copies of the whole set at smaller scales. The part literally contains the whole.

If nature is fractal (which it is), then nature is holographic. Each scale contains information about all scales.

The Hermetic Principles and Modern Physics

The Kybalion (1908) codified seven Hermetic principles. Let's check them against modern physics:

1. The Principle of Mentalism: "The All is Mind"

Hermetic claim: Consciousness is fundamental; matter arises from mind.

Quantum mechanics: Observation affects reality. Consciousness cannot be separated from physical systems. Some interpretations (von Neumann-Wigner) propose consciousness causes wave function collapse.

Convergence: Both claim consciousness is fundamental, not emergent.

2. The Principle of Correspondence: "As above, so below"

Hermetic claim: Patterns repeat across scales.

Modern physics: Fractal mathematics, scale invariance, holographic principle, same laws at all scales.

Convergence: Complete. This is mathematically proven.

3. The Principle of Vibration: "Nothing rests; everything moves"

Hermetic claim: All matter is in constant motion/vibration.

Quantum mechanics: Zero-point energy means even at absolute zero, particles vibrate. Quantum fields fluctuate constantly. Matter is vibrating energy.

Convergence: Exact. Matter is frozen vibration (E=mcΒ²).

4. The Principle of Polarity: "Everything is dual"

Hermetic claim: Everything has poles, opposites that are actually extremes of the same thing.

Quantum mechanics: Wave-particle duality. Matter and antimatter. Positive and negative charge. Spin up and spin down.

Convergence: Duality is fundamental to quantum systems.

5. The Principle of Rhythm: "Everything flows"

Hermetic claim: Everything has cycles, pendulum swings, rhythmic patterns.

Modern physics: Oscillation is fundamental. Electromagnetic waves, quantum oscillators, orbital periods, wave functionsβ€”all rhythmic.

Convergence: Periodicity is universal in physics.

6. The Principle of Cause and Effect: "Every cause has its effect"

Hermetic claim: Nothing happens by chance; law governs all.

Classical physics: Deterministic causality.

Quantum mechanics: Probabilistic causality, but still lawful (SchrΓΆdinger equation).

Convergence: Both reject pure randomness in favor of lawful patterns.

7. The Principle of Gender: "Gender is in everything"

Hermetic claim: Masculine and feminine principles (active/receptive, projective/receptive) exist at all levels.

Modern physics: Positive/negative charge, matter/antimatter, emission/absorption, force carriers/matter particles.

Convergence: Complementary pairs are fundamental.

Six of seven principles have direct physics correlates. The seventh (gender) maps onto complementary pairs in physics.

Specific Predictions the Hermetic Axiom Made

Let's be explicit about what Hermetic philosophy predicted that physics later confirmed:

Prediction 1: Atoms mirror solar systems
Hermetic teaching: The microcosm (human/atom) mirrors the macrocosm (cosmos).
Physics: Early atomic models (Bohr) depicted electrons orbiting nuclei like planets orbit the sun. While quantum mechanics refined this, the structural similarity remains.

Prediction 2: Matter is vibrating energy
Hermetic teaching: All matter is vibration at different frequencies.
Physics: E=mcΒ² proves matter is condensed energy. Quantum field theory describes particles as excitations (vibrations) in fields.

Prediction 3: Everything is connected
Hermetic teaching: All is One; separation is illusion.
Physics: Quantum entanglement, non-locality, holographic principleβ€”all confirm fundamental interconnection.

Prediction 4: Observation affects reality
Hermetic teaching: Consciousness and matter are unified; mind affects world.
Physics: Observer effect, measurement problem, wave function collapseβ€”all show observation affects outcomes.

Prediction 5: Patterns repeat at all scales
Hermetic teaching: As above, so belowβ€”same patterns at all levels.
Physics: Fractal geometry, scale invariance, same physical laws from quantum to cosmic scales.

These aren't vague correlations. These are specific, testable claims that modern physics validates.

Why Did Hermetic Philosophy Get It Right?

How did ancient philosophers, without particle accelerators or mathematics, arrive at conclusions that match quantum mechanics?

Deep Observation
Hermetic practitioners engaged in intense contemplation and observation of nature's patterns. They noticed self-similarity, rhythms, polarities, and interconnections.

Logical Extrapolation
If patterns repeat at observable scales (seasons, tides, growth patterns), they reasoned these patterns might be universalβ€”extending to scales beyond observation.

Mystical Experience
Altered states of consciousness (meditation, ritual, entheogens) can produce experiences of unity, interconnection, and the dissolution of subject-object boundariesβ€”experiences that match quantum mechanical descriptions of reality.

Convergent Reasoning
Multiple independent philosophical traditions (Hermetic, Vedic, Taoist, Buddhist) arrived at similar conclusions: reality is unified, consciousness and matter are inseparable, patterns repeat across scales. This convergence suggests they were discovering genuine constants.

Implications for Understanding Reality

For Physicists: The Hermetic axiom offers a philosophical framework for interpreting quantum mechanics. If "as above, so below" is true, then studying consciousness might reveal insights about quantum systems, and vice versa.

For Mystics: Your tradition wasn't making things up. The principles you've been working with describe actual features of reality that physics now confirms.

For Everyone: The universe is more unified, more interconnected, and more consciousness-involved than materialist philosophy assumed. Ancient wisdom and modern science converge on a participatory, holographic, fundamentally unified reality.

The Convergence Is Exact

"As above, so below" is not metaphor. It's a precise description of:

β€’ Fractal self-similarity
β€’ Scale invariance
β€’ Holographic information encoding
β€’ Universal physical laws
β€’ Observer-observed unity

The Emerald Tablet encoded quantum mechanics in a single sentence, written over a millennium before quantum theory existed.

Different method (contemplative philosophy vs. experimental physics). Same truth (reality is self-similar, unified, and participatory). Convergence.

The Hermetic axiom predicted modern physics.

Physics proved the axiom.

As above, so belowβ€”in mathematics, in nature, in consciousness, in cosmos.

The miracle of the One Thing is that it's actually true.

The convergence of Hermetic philosophy with modern physics reveals that the patterns of the universe are not only self-similar across scales but also deeply participatory. For me, engaging with these truths in a personal way is incredibly meaningfulβ€”the Cosmic Alignment Ritual Kit offers a way to attune oneself to the celestial flows, the Jung and the Archetype guide explores the bridge between the inner microcosm and the outer macrocosm through tarot and astrology, and the 40 Manifestation Rituals workbook puts the principle of correspondence into daily practice, turning intention into reality.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
