Quarter 1 Tarot Practice: Planting Season, New Beginnings, Intention, and Foundation
Share
The first quarter of a year-long tarot practice — Weeks 1 through 13 — corresponds to the energy of spring and the archetype of planting. This is the season of genuine beginning: not the continuation of what already exists, not the optimization of what is already working, but the clearing of ground and the planting of seeds for what has not yet grown. Quarter 1 is the most vulnerable quarter of the year-long practice because beginning always requires the willingness to be genuinely new, which involves uncertainty, ungroundedness, and the particular discomfort of not yet knowing how the seeds will grow.
The thirteen weeks of the first quarter move through the essential themes of genuine beginning: new beginnings, intention, foundation, shadow, body, relationships, creativity, and intuition. Each of these themes is foundational — each one addresses a dimension of the self or the life that must be engaged honestly before the growing season of the second quarter can produce genuine development rather than the growth of what was already there.
Week 1: New Beginnings
The first week's spread addresses the single most important question at the threshold of a new beginning: what is genuinely new here? Not the continuation of last year's projects with this year's energy, not the repetition of familiar patterns with a new name, but what is genuinely, specifically, newly beginning — the thing that has not yet existed in this form and that this year is the moment for. The new beginning spread creates the specific, named intention that the entire year's practice will return to and measure its growth against.
Week 2: Intention
The intention week's spread moves from the identification of what is new to the clarification of what is genuinely wanted: not the goal that sounds right or the ambition that earns approval, but the genuine deep intention that is rooted in the practitioner's actual values and actual vision. The intention spread distinguishes between surface intention (what you think you should want) and genuine intention (what you actually want when you are being completely honest with yourself), which is one of the most valuable distinctions the year-long practice produces.
Week 4: Shadow
The shadow week appears in the first quarter deliberately: before the growing season begins, the honest reckoning with what is carried below the surface — the unconscious patterns, the unacknowledged fears, the parts of the self that have been disowned rather than integrated — prevents the shadow from becoming the unacknowledged driver of the year's events. The shadow spread does not require the full depth of dedicated shadow work; it requires the honest identification of what is most likely to undermine the year's intentions if it is not seen.
Week 5: Body
The body week addresses the physical dimension of the practice: what the body knows, what the body needs, and how the physical reality of the practitioner's life is most affecting the inner life that the cards address. The body spread reconnects the tarot practice to the somatic, practical, physical dimension of existence — a reconnection that is particularly important in practices that risk becoming purely mental or spiritual at the expense of the embodied reality that is where the cards' guidance must ultimately be applied.
Week 7: Creativity
The creativity week addresses the creative impulse that is most alive at the beginning of the year: what wants to be made, expressed, or brought into existence, and what is preventing its expression. The creativity spread is one of the most commonly insightful spreads in the first quarter because it addresses a dimension of the self that many practitioners have learned to defer, minimize, or treat as less important than the practical demands of the life — and the cards consistently reveal how much is being lost in that deferral.
Week 8: Intuition
The intuition week addresses the practitioner's own inner knowing: what the intuition — the deep, pre-verbal, body-based knowing that precedes analysis — is most trying to communicate, and what is preventing it from being heard. The intuition spread is a meta-practice within the tarot practice: a reading about the quality of the practitioner's relationship with the very faculty that the tarot practice is designed to develop.
Completing the First Quarter
By the end of Week 13, the practitioner has moved through the complete foundation of a genuine beginning: intention set, shadow acknowledged, body honored, relationships examined, creativity activated, and intuition consulted. The first quarter does not produce visible results in the way that the second quarter's growing season does; its fruit is the quality of the foundation laid, which determines what the growing season of Quarter 2 can actually develop.
