Red Magic: Candles, Crystals, Herbs & Rituals for Working with Red Energy
Share
This is Part 2 of 37 in the Color Magic series. This article covers the magical applications of red energy. For the spiritual and psychological foundations, see: Red: The Complete Spiritual Guide.
Red in the Magical Tradition
Red has been used in magical practice since the earliest evidence of human ritual. Red ochre in burial sites. Red handprints in cave paintings. Red thread tied around the wrist for protection. Red doors to ward off evil. Red envelopes to carry blessings. The magical use of red is not a modern invention — it is one of the oldest and most universal forms of intentional color work in human history.
In contemporary magical practice, red is the color of:
- Passion and desire — romantic attraction, sexual energy, the magnetism of genuine wanting
- Courage and confidence — the will to act, to speak, to stand up, to begin
- Protection — fierce, active protection that repels rather than simply shields
- Vitality and life force — healing depleted energy, restoring physical strength
- Mars magic — competition, victory, overcoming obstacles, the warrior's edge
- Root chakra activation — grounding, survival, the body's fundamental needs
Red Candle Magic
What Red Candles Are For
Red candles are among the most versatile and powerful in the magical practitioner's collection. They are used for workings that require force, urgency, passion, or the activation of the will. Unlike the gentle, receptive energy of pink or the expansive abundance of green, red candle magic is direct, active, and immediate.
Use red candles for:
- Passion and attraction spells — drawing a lover, intensifying desire, rekindling passion
- Courage workings — before difficult conversations, job interviews, performances, confrontations
- Protection magic — especially active protection that sends energy back to its source
- Vitality and energy restoration — when you are depleted, exhausted, running on empty
- Mars-day workings — Tuesday is Mars's day; red candles on Tuesday amplify all Mars-ruled intentions
- Competition and victory — sports, business, legal matters where you need the winning edge
- Breaking through obstacles — when something has been blocked and needs to move

Dressing a Red Candle
To dress a red candle for magical work, anoint it with an appropriate oil — drawing the oil from the center outward toward the ends for attraction work, or from the ends toward the center for banishing. Appropriate oils for red candle work include: dragon's blood oil, cinnamon oil, ginger oil, patchouli (for grounding passion), rose oil (for romantic work), or a dedicated Mars oil.
After anointing, roll the candle in corresponding herbs or carve your intention into the wax with a pin or athame. Set the candle in a fireproof holder on your altar, surrounded by supporting crystals and herbs.
Red Herbs, Resins, and Botanicals
Dragon's Blood Resin
The most powerful red magical ingredient. Dragon's blood is the deep red resin of the Dracaena tree — used for centuries in protection magic, love spells, and the amplification of any working. It increases the power of whatever it is combined with. Burn it as incense, add it to spell bags, or use dragon's blood ink for sigil work.
Cinnamon
The spice of Mars — warming, activating, drawing. Cinnamon is used in prosperity magic, passion spells, and workings that need to move quickly. Sprinkle it at your doorstep to draw good fortune. Add it to love sachets. Burn it as incense to raise the energy of any working.
Red Rose
The flower of Venus expressed through Mars — passion, love, desire, the heart's courage. Red rose petals in spell bags, rose water for anointing, rose thorns for protection work. The red rose is the complete symbol of love that is both tender and fierce.
Ginger Root
Fiery, activating, accelerating. Ginger speeds up any working and adds the heat of Mars energy. Use it in spells that need urgency, in workings for courage and confidence, or in any situation where you need things to move faster.
Cayenne Pepper
The most fiery of the magical herbs — used to add heat, urgency, and force to any working. In protection magic, cayenne sends energy back to its source with force. Use sparingly and with clear intention.
Hibiscus
The red flower of passion and desire — used in love magic, attraction spells, and workings for confidence and self-love. Hibiscus tea is a magical drink for heart-opening and passion activation.
Pomegranate
The fruit of the underworld and of abundance — red seeds that carry the energy of life force, fertility, and the power of the deep earth. Use pomegranate in workings for vitality, for connection to ancestral power, and for the activation of the root chakra.
Red Crystals for Magic
Garnet — The Passion Stone
Garnet is the premier stone for passion magic — for workings that involve desire, commitment, and the regenerative power of the deep earth. It revitalizes depleted energy, strengthens the will, and draws what is genuinely desired. Place garnet on your altar for passion workings, carry it for sustained energy, or use it in crystal grids for vitality.
Red Jasper — The Warrior's Stone
Red jasper is the stone of endurance, courage, and the slow steady fire of sustained effort. It is less about the flash of passion and more about the long game — the commitment that holds through difficulty, the courage that shows up every day. Use red jasper for workings that require persistence, for protection that is grounded and reliable, and for root chakra healing.
Ruby — The Stone of Kings
Ruby is the most precious of the red stones — the stone of nobility, passion, and the heart's highest courage. In magical tradition, ruby protects against misfortune, strengthens the life force, and opens the heart to genuine love. Use ruby for workings of the highest importance, when you need the full force of red energy at its most refined.
Red Carnelian — The Creative Fire
Carnelian bridges the root and sacral chakras — it carries red's grounding vitality into the realm of creativity and action. Use carnelian for workings that involve creative courage, for motivation when you are stuck, and for the activation of the will to begin.
Complete Red Magic Rituals
Ritual 1: Courage Activation
Best timing: Tuesday, waxing moon, dawn or noon
You will need: Red candle, red jasper or garnet, cinnamon, dragon's blood incense, red cord
Method: Light the dragon's blood incense. Hold the red jasper in your dominant hand and feel its weight — solid, grounded, real. Light the red candle. Speak your intention aloud: what specific act of courage are you calling forth? What do you need to do that fear has been preventing? State it clearly, in the present tense, as if it is already done.
Tie three knots in the red cord as you speak: With this knot, I bind courage to my will. With this knot, I bind action to my intention. With this knot, I bind completion to my beginning. Carry the knotted cord with you until the act of courage has been completed. Then burn it in gratitude.
Ritual 2: Passion and Attraction
Best timing: Friday (Venus) or Tuesday (Mars), waxing to full moon
You will need: Red candle, garnet, red rose petals, cinnamon, rose oil, paper and red pen
Method: Anoint the red candle with rose oil, drawing from center outward. Write your intention on the paper in red ink — not a specific person (free will must be honored) but the qualities of the love or passion you are calling in. Place the paper under the candle. Surround with rose petals and garnet. Light the candle and visualize the energy of genuine passion — not desperate wanting, but the confident, warm, magnetic energy of someone who knows what they want and trusts that it is coming. Let the candle burn completely.
Ritual 3: Life Force Restoration
Best timing: Any time you feel depleted; Sunday or Tuesday for maximum effect
You will need: Red candle, red jasper, pomegranate seeds (or juice), red cloth
Method: Sit comfortably with the red jasper at the base of your spine or held in both hands. Light the red candle. Eat the pomegranate seeds slowly and consciously, feeling the life force of the red fruit entering your body. Visualize red light filling your root chakra — a deep, warm, steady red glow at the base of your spine, spreading upward through your body with each breath. Speak: I am alive. I am here. The life force flows through me fully and freely. Sit with this visualization for as long as feels right. Carry the red jasper with you for the next three days.
Red Sigil Work
Sigils drawn in red ink or dragon's blood ink carry the full force of Mars energy. Red sigils are particularly effective for:
- Protection sigils drawn on doorways, windows, or the body
- Courage sigils worn on the skin before challenging situations
- Passion sigils placed under pillows or in intimate spaces
- Victory sigils carried into competition or conflict
To create a red sigil: write your intention as a statement, remove all vowels and repeated consonants, combine the remaining letters into a single abstract symbol. Draw it in red ink on red paper, charge it by holding it over a red candle flame (carefully), and carry or place it according to your intention.
Red Magic Ethics and Cautions
Red magic is powerful magic — and powerful magic requires clear intention and ethical awareness. A few principles for working with red energy responsibly:
- Free will: Passion and attraction magic should call in the energy of love and connection, not target specific individuals. Honor the free will of others.
- Anger and protection: There is a difference between protection magic (creating a shield) and aggressive magic (sending harm). Red can be used for fierce protection; use it with clarity about your intention.
- Grounding after red work: Red energy is activating and can leave you feeling wired or agitated. After red magic, ground yourself by touching the earth, eating something substantial, or holding a grounding stone like black tourmaline or smoky quartz.
- Respect the fire: Red candle magic involves literal fire. Never leave candles unattended. Use appropriate holders. Treat fire with the respect it deserves.
