Release vs. Escape: The Seventh Pentacle and the Difference Between Freedom and Flight
Share
One of the most important distinctions in working with the Seventh Pentacle of the Sun is the distinction between release and escape — between genuine liberation and the flight from difficulty that masquerades as liberation. This distinction matters both practically and magically: the Seventh Pentacle's liberating force works most effectively when it is directed toward genuine release, and it works less effectively — or produces results that are ultimately unsatisfying — when it is directed toward escape from difficulty that the practitioner has not yet genuinely faced.
What Escape Looks Like
Escape is the movement away from difficulty without the genuine dissolution of the bond that creates it. The practitioner who escapes a difficult situation without genuinely releasing the bond that maintains it will find that the same pattern recreates itself in the new situation — that the same dynamic, the same constraint, the same quality of confinement appears in a new form in the new context. This is the signature of escape rather than release: the pattern follows the practitioner because the bond has not been genuinely dissolved, only temporarily avoided.
Escape is not always wrong — sometimes the immediate removal from a harmful situation is necessary before the deeper work of genuine release can begin. But escape alone is not liberation, and the Seventh Pentacle's work is not complete until the bond itself — not merely the immediate situation — has been genuinely dissolved.
What Genuine Release Looks Like
Genuine release is the dissolution of the bond itself — the energetic condition that maintains the confinement — rather than merely the removal from the immediate situation. The practitioner who has genuinely released a bond will find that the pattern does not follow them: that the new situation is genuinely new, that the energy previously consumed by the bond is genuinely available, and that the freedom they experience is stable rather than temporary.
Genuine release often requires facing what the escape avoids: the honest acknowledgment of the bond's nature, the practitioner's own role in maintaining it, and the genuine grief or difficulty that dissolution involves. The Seventh Pentacle supports this honest facing — its solar illumination reveals what the bond actually is, and its liberating force dissolves it at the root rather than merely at the surface.
Working with the Seventh Pentacle for Genuine Release
Before invoking the Seventh Pentacle's liberating force, ask honestly: Am I seeking genuine release or escape? Am I willing to face what the bond actually is and what my role in maintaining it has been? Am I ready for the genuine dissolution that the seal's work produces, including the grief and reorganization that genuine liberation involves? The practitioner who can answer these questions honestly is ready for the Seventh Pentacle's deepest work.
