Sacred Space Oil, Sun Oil, and Ancestor Oil: Magical Oil Recipes for the Altar
Share
Three of the most important oils in any serious magical practice are the ones that create and consecrate the sacred space in which all other work takes place, call in the solar energy of consciousness and clarity, and open the channel to the wisdom of those who have come before. Sacred space oil consecrates the altar and the working space. Sun oil invokes the solar principle — clarity, strength, vitality, and the power of conscious intention. Ancestor oil opens the connection with the lineage, with those who have died and whose wisdom remains accessible to the living. These are the altar blends: the oils that prepare the field for everything else.
Sacred Space Oil: The Consecration Blend
Purpose: To purify and consecrate any space, object, altar, or working area; to create the energetic container of sacred space that distinguishes the ritual context from ordinary life; to call the highest energies into the space and clear what should not be there.
Essential oil formula (per 10ml carrier):
- Frankincense: 5 drops — the supreme oil of consecration across virtually every spiritual tradition; frankincense purifies, elevates, and invites the sacred into any space it enters
- Myrrh: 3 drops — frankincense's ancient companion; myrrh anchors the sacred space in the physical world and adds the quality of deep, grounded holiness
- Sandalwood: 2 drops — the third of the great sacred resins, completing the consecration blend with its quality of meditative depth and genuine spiritual presence
Carrier oil: Olive oil, the traditional oil of consecration used in virtually every ancient religious and magical tradition.
How to use: Anoint the altar's four corners, the central point, and any altar objects being consecrated. Wipe down doorways and windowsills to consecrate the space at its thresholds. Anoint candles before any ritual working. Apply to crystals before programing them with intention. Use to anoint the forehead, hands, and heart before any ritual practice as the mark of the practitioner entering sacred space.
Sun Oil: The Solar Blend
Purpose: To invoke the solar principle in all its dimensions: clarity, vitality, the warmth of genuine confidence and generous self-expression, the power of conscious intention, and the quality of radiant presence that the sun at its height embodies.
Essential oil formula (per 10ml carrier):
- Frankincense: 3 drops — the sun's sacred resin, used in solar temples since antiquity
- Orange: 3 drops — the solar citrus of warmth, joy, and the abundant generosity of the sun at its peak
- Lemon: 2 drops — the sharp, bright, clarifying citrus of the solar mind at its clearest
- Ginger: 2 drops — the fire of the sun's activating, energizing, vitality-igniting quality
Carrier oil: Sunflower oil (the solar carrier) or jojoba.
Botanical additions: Citrine chip (the sun stone), sunstone chip, a small piece of dried orange peel.
Best time to make: Sunday at noon, the peak of the solar day. The summer solstice is the most powerful time for sun oil making; the waxing moon supports the sun's building, increasing energy.
How to use: Apply to the solar plexus and heart center for confidence, vitality, and genuine presence. Anoint gold or yellow candles for solar ritual. Use on Sunday mornings as the week's opening anointing. Apply before any situation that requires clarity, authority, or the quality of radiant, genuine presence.
Ancestor Oil: The Lineage Blend
Purpose: To open and deepen the connection with the ancestors — the specific dead of the practitioner's lineage, and the broader ancestral field of human wisdom — and to invite their guidance, support, and protection into the working space and the practitioner's life.
Essential oil formula (per 10ml carrier):
- Frankincense: 3 drops — the oil of ancestral communication across every tradition that has used incense to reach the dead
- Myrrh: 2 drops — the oil of the underworld crossing, of the communication between the living and the dead
- Cypress: 2 drops — the tree of the ancestral groves, the traditional tree of mourning and ancestral connection in Mediterranean tradition
- Cedarwood: 3 drops — the ancient, ancestral wood; cedar has been the wood of temples and sacred spaces for so long that it carries the memory of all the sacred work it has held
Carrier oil: Olive oil (the oil of the ancient Mediterranean world, deeply resonant with the ancestors of many traditions) or jojoba.
Botanical additions: Smoky quartz chip (for communication across the veil), obsidian chip, a photograph or object belonging to a specific ancestor placed near the bottle during making.
Best time to make: Samhain (October 31st – November 1st) is the peak time for ancestor oil making; also appropriate at any new or dark moon, on Saturdays, or any time the ancestor connection is being deliberately cultivated.
How to use: Anoint the ancestor altar and any photographs or objects of the deceased. Apply to the wrists and heart center before ancestor communication practices, Samhain ceremonies, or any ritual that works with lineage. Anoint ancestral offerings before placing them on the altar.
