Sagittarius Somatic Healing: Releasing Trauma from the Body

BY NICOLE LAU

Your body remembers what your mind tries to forget. For Sagittarius, trauma doesn't just live in your thoughtsβ€”it lives in your hips, your thighs, your liver, your sciatic nerve. Every time you had to run instead of stay, every time you were trapped when you needed freedom, every time you escaped into your head to avoid feelingβ€”your body stored it. And now, years later, that stored energy is creating hip tension, sciatica, restless legs, and a nervous system that won't land.

This is somatic healingβ€”the practice of releasing trauma directly from the body. Because talking about it isn't enough. You have to ground it, release it, land it from your muscles, your fascia, your nervous system. And for Sagittarius, that means learning to stay, to root down, and to teach your body that commitment doesn't equal cage.

Where Sagittarius Holds Trauma in the Body

Sagittarius rules the hips, thighs, sciatic nerve, and liver. This is where your trauma lives:

1. The Hips and Thighs

What's stored: Flight energy, restlessness, fear of being trapped, incomplete escape.

Why it's there: Your hips hold the energy of runningβ€”they're always ready to flee, never fully landing.

Symptoms: Hip tension, tight hip flexors, difficulty with hip openers, restless legs, chronic need to move.

2. The Sciatic Nerve

What's stored: Chronic flight response, fear of commitment, terror of being stuck.

Why it's there: The sciatic nerve runs down your legsβ€”when you're always ready to run, it gets inflamed.

Symptoms: Sciatica, shooting pain down legs, difficulty sitting still, pain when trying to stay.

3. The Liver

What's stored: Anger at restriction, resentment about being controlled, suppressed rage.

Why it's there: The liver processes angerβ€”when you can't express rage at being trapped, it gets stuck.

Symptoms: Liver issues, digestive problems, difficulty processing emotions, chronic frustration.

4. The Feet

What's stored: Inability to ground, fear of landing, terror of staying in one place.

Why it's there: Your feet won't fully touch the groundβ€”you're always ready to take off.

Symptoms: Foot pain, difficulty grounding, feeling unrooted, chronic restlessness.

The Science: Why Somatic Healing Works for Sagittarius

Bessel van der Kolk's research in The Body Keeps the Score shows that trauma is stored in the body, not just the mind. For Sagittarius, this means:

  • Your hips hold the incomplete flight response
  • Your legs are always ready to run
  • Your nervous system is stuck in escape mode
  • Talking about it won't release itβ€”you have to ground it, land it, root it

Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing teaches that healing requires completing the flight response and teaching the body that staying is safe. For Sagittarius, that's learning that you can land without losing yourself.

Somatic Practice 1: Hip Opening (Releasing Flight Energy)

What it does: Releases the chronic flight energy stored in the hips.

How to do it:

  1. Lie on your back. Bring right ankle to left knee (figure 4).
  2. Pull left thigh toward chest, feeling the stretch in right hip.
  3. Stay for 3-5 minutes, breathing into the hip.
  4. Emotions may ariseβ€”restlessness, panic, fear. Let them.
  5. Say: "I can stay. I can land. I'm safe here."
  6. Repeat on other side.

When to use it: Daily, to release flight energy, or when you feel the urge to run.

Somatic Practice 2: Grounding Through Feet (Learning to Land)

What it does: Teaches your body that it's safe to land, to stay, to root down.

How to do it:

  1. Stand barefoot. Feel your feet on the ground.
  2. Slowly shift weight from foot to foot.
  3. Then stomp your feet 20 times, forcefully.
  4. Stand still. Feel the vibration, the connection to earth.
  5. Say out loud: "I'm here. I'm staying. The ground is solid. I'm safe."
  6. Take 10 deep breaths, feeling your feet with each exhale.
  7. Notice the resistance to staying. Stay anyway.

When to use it: When you feel restless, when you want to run, or daily to practice landing.

Somatic Practice 3: Thigh Massage (Releasing Restlessness)

What it does: Releases chronic tension and restlessness from the thighs.

How to do it:

  1. Sit comfortably. Use your hands or a foam roller.
  2. Massage your thighsβ€”front, sides, backβ€”with firm pressure.
  3. When you find a tender spot, pause and breathe into it.
  4. Do this for 10 minutes per leg.
  5. Say: "I release the need to run. I can be still. I can stay."
  6. Notice the softening, the permission to land.

When to use it: When legs feel restless, when you can't sit still, or daily for release.

Somatic Practice 4: Liver Tapping (Releasing Anger at Restriction)

What it does: Releases anger and resentment about being controlled or trapped.

How to do it:

  1. Stand or sit. Place your right hand over your liver (right side, below ribs).
  2. Gently tap with your fist for 2-3 minutes.
  3. As you tap, say: "I release the anger. I release the resentment. I'm free to stay."
  4. Breathe into your liver.
  5. Notice the warmth, the release of stuck anger.

When to use it: When you feel angry about restriction, when you feel trapped, or daily for liver health.

Somatic Practice 5: Commitment Practice (Teaching the Body That Staying Is Safe)

What it does: Slowly teaches your nervous system that commitment doesn't equal cage.

How to do it:

  1. Sit or lie down. Place your hand on your heart.
  2. Say out loud: "I commit to staying here for 10 minutes."
  3. Set a timer. Don't move, don't check your phone, don't escape.
  4. When the urge to run arises, notice it. Stay anyway.
  5. Say: "I can stay and still be free. Commitment doesn't equal cage."
  6. Notice that you survive. That staying doesn't kill you.
  7. Gradually increase the timeβ€”15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour.

When to use it: Daily, to build capacity for commitment, or when you feel the urge to run.

Advanced Practice: Somatic Experiencing Session

For deeper healing, work with a Somatic Experiencing practitioner who can help you:

  • Complete the flight response
  • Release chronic restlessness from the body
  • Teach your nervous system that staying is safe
  • Build capacity for commitment

This is especially important if you have chronic sciatica, hip issues, or commitment-phobia that won't resolve with self-practice.

What to Expect: The Healing Process

Week 1-2: You might feel more restless at first. This is normalβ€”you're waking up the flight energy to release it.

Week 3-4: You'll notice less hip tension, easier sitting still, more capacity to stay.

Month 2-3: Chronic restlessness starts to release. You can land without feeling trapped.

Month 6+: Your nervous system learns a new baseline. You can commit without losing yourself.

The Gift of Somatic Healing: The Grounded Archer

When Sagittarius releases trauma from the body, you don't lose your freedomβ€”you expand it. The flight energy that was stuck becomes the ability to choose adventure. The restlessness becomes healthy exploration. The commitment-phobia becomes the freedom to commit.

You become free to stay and free to go, grounded and expansive, committed and adventurous. You can finally land.

Your body has been holding this for you. Now it's time to let it go.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
