Samhain Tarot Ceremony: The Ancestor Reading for the Witch's New Year

Samhain falls on October 31st and marks the witch's new year β€” the threshold of the Celtic calendar where the old year ends and the new begins in darkness rather than light. It is the night when the veil between the living world and the world of the dead grows thin enough to see through, when the ancestors are genuinely close, when the dead can speak if the living know how to listen. Every culture that has recognized the cyclical nature of time has identified a corresponding moment when the dead return: the Roman Lemuria, the Mexican DΓa de los Muertos, the Chinese Hungry Ghost Festival, the Buddhist Obon. The convergence across unconnected traditions reflects a genuine phenomenon β€” a thinning of whatever separates the living world from the dead, a moment when the boundaries become permeable and communication in both directions becomes possible.

The Samhain tarot ceremony is designed to work with this permeability: to open a deliberate channel of connection with the ancestors, to honor those who have died, to receive whatever wisdom or message the dead wish to offer, and to set intentions for the new year in the darkness where all genuine seeds must be planted.

Setting the Altar for Samhain

The Samhain altar is the most important altar of the year for practitioners who work with the Wheel. Place photographs or objects belonging to those who have died. Light candles β€” black and orange, the colors of Samhain β€” in their honor. Add pomegranate seeds (the fruit of the underworld), apples (the fruit of the Otherworld in Celtic tradition), and a glass of water or whiskey as an offering to the dead. Place your tarot deck on the altar during the ceremony so the cards absorb the Samhain energy of ancestral connection before the reading begins.

Crystals: black obsidian (for seeing through the veil), labradorite (for liminal perception), smoky quartz (for grounding while working in the between-worlds). Herbs: mugwort, wormwood, rosemary for remembrance. Incense: myrrh for the underworld, copal for ancestral communication.

The Samhain Tarot Ceremony Layout

This is a six-card ancestral wisdom spread drawn after the opening of sacred space.

Card 1 β€” The Ancestor Who Walks With Me: Which ancestor (in spirit or in quality) is most present with you right now? This may be a named individual who has died, or a quality of ancestral wisdom that lives in your lineage.

Card 2 β€” What They Carry That I Carry: What pattern, wound, gift, or quality have you inherited from your lineage β€” consciously or unconsciously? What is being handed to you through the bloodline?

Card 3 β€” What They Want Me to Know: If your ancestors could speak directly to your present situation, what would they say? What wisdom from the lineage applies to where you are now?

Card 4 β€” What Must Be Laid to Rest: What from the ancestral lineage β€” what inherited pattern, wound, or way of being β€” is ready to be released? What are you being asked to heal in yourself so that it ends with you?

Card 5 β€” The Seed of the New Year: What wants to be born in the coming year? What is the essential intention that this darkness is asking you to plant?

Card 6 β€” The Gift of the Dark: What does this liminal moment offer you that the ordinary light of day cannot? What is the specific gift of turning toward the dark rather than away from it?

The Three-Step Ceremony Flow

Opening: Light the candles. Speak aloud the names of the dead you are honoring β€” not just the famous dead but your own: grandparents, ancestors, those who died before you were born whose lives made yours possible. Welcome them to the space. Shuffle the deck while holding the question: "What does my lineage want me to know?"

Reading: Draw the six cards and lay them in sequence. Take time with each one β€” the Samhain reading is not a quick pull but a genuine conversation. Let the cards show what the ancestors might struggle to say in ordinary language.

Integration: Record the reading in your journal. Write a letter to the ancestor who feels most present β€” tell them what you see, what you are releasing, what you are beginning. Leave the letter on the altar overnight. In the morning, burn it or bury it so that what it carries can complete its journey.
