SCORPIO Retrograde: Shadow Work & Inner Review

BY NICOLE LAU
When planets retrograde through Scorpio, you descend into the underworld. This is not a time for surface living, but for examining your relationship with power, control, and the transformative fires of death and rebirth. Retrograde periods invite you to review your shadow and reclaim the power you've given away or weaponized.
Understanding Scorpio Retrograde Energy
Scorpio governs transformation, power, intimacy, death, and the mysteries hidden beneath the surface. When retrograde energy moves through this sign, it creates a soul reckoning that asks you to examine:
- Control patterns – Where you manipulate to feel safe
- Power dynamics – How you give away or abuse your power
- Trust wounds – Betrayals that keep you from vulnerability
- Shadow material – The parts of yourself you've rejected or denied
- Transformation resistance – What you're clinging to that needs to die
This retrograde asks: What am I controlling that needs to be surrendered? What death am I resisting that would set me free?
The Shadow Work: Facing the Underworld
Scorpio retrograde reveals the deepest shadow – the part of you that uses power to protect wounds, that controls to avoid loss, and that refuses to let go even when holding on is killing you.
Shadow Prompts for Scorpio Retrograde:
Control & Power:
• Where do I try to control outcomes to feel safe?
• What am I manipulating (consciously or unconsciously)?
• Where do I use power over others instead of owning my own?
• What would I have to feel if I surrendered control?
Trust & Betrayal:
• What betrayal am I still carrying?
• Where do I withhold intimacy to protect myself?
• What would change if I trusted again?
• Where have I betrayed myself to avoid being betrayed by others?
Death & Transformation:
• What version of myself is ready to die?
• What am I clinging to that's already dead?
• What transformation am I resisting?
• What would be born if I let this die?
Inner Review Ritual: The Underworld Descent
This ritual helps you descend into your shadow, face what you've been avoiding, and reclaim the power hidden in your depths.
You'll Need:
- Black or deep red candle
- Obsidian or black tourmaline crystal
- Journal and pen
- Fireproof bowl
- Something that represents what you're releasing (photo, object, symbol)
The Practice:
1. Descend Into Darkness
Create a dark, quiet space. Light your candle. Hold your crystal and take five deep breaths, allowing yourself to feel everything you've been avoiding – rage, grief, fear, shame. Do not turn away.
2. The Shadow Inventory
Write down what you've been hiding in the shadows:
• The rage you've suppressed
• The power you've given away
• The control you use to feel safe
• The intimacy you avoid
• The transformation you resist
3. The Wound Excavation
For each shadow pattern, dig deeper: What wound is it protecting? What betrayal created this defense? What are you really afraid of?
4. The Integration
Burn the symbolic object and your shadow list, saying:
"I descend into my depths and reclaim my power. I surrender control and trust transformation. What must die, I release. What must be born, I welcome. I am the phoenix, the alchemist, the one who transforms darkness into gold."
5. The Reclamation
Write one way you will reclaim your power this retrograde – through speaking truth, setting boundaries, or allowing transformation.
Retrograde Practices: Shadow Integration
During Scorpio retrograde, practice facing what you've been avoiding:
- Shadow journaling – Write to the parts of yourself you judge or reject
- Release control – Identify one thing you're trying to control and practice letting go
- Embrace intensity – Allow yourself to feel deeply without apologizing
- Trust practice – Share one vulnerable truth with someone safe
- Death meditation – Visualize what needs to die and what wants to be born
Integration Questions
As you move through this retrograde, reflect on:
- What control pattern am I ready to release?
- Where can I reclaim my power without dominating others?
- What shadow aspect is ready to be integrated?
- How can I trust transformation instead of resisting it?
- What would change if I surrendered to the death and rebirth cycle?
Affirmation
I trust the sacred cycle of death and rebirth. I release control and surrender to transformation. My power is not diminished by vulnerability. I face my shadow and reclaim my wholeness. I am the phoenix, forever rising.
Scorpio retrograde is not a time to stay on the surface, but to descend into your depths and face what you've been avoiding. True power is not found in control, but in the courage to surrender and transform.
May you descend with courage and rise with power.
