Seasonal Herb Harvest Calendar: Spring, Summer, Autumn & Winter

Seasonal Herb Harvest Calendar: Spring, Summer, Autumn & Winter

Every herb has its season. The art of the magical herbalist is knowing not just which plants to use, but when to harvest them: when their essential oils are most concentrated, when their magical properties are at their peak, when the plant's energy is most available for the work you have in mind.

General Harvesting Principles

Time of day: Harvest most herbs in the morning after the dew has dried but before the heat of the day. Weather: Harvest on dry days only. Quantity: Never harvest more than one-third of any plant at one time. For wildcrafted herbs, take no more than ten percent of any wild population. Gratitude: Before harvesting, acknowledge the plant. After harvesting, leave a small offering of water, cornmeal, or honey in gratitude.

Spring Harvest (March to May)

Spring herbs carry bright, fresh, uplifting energy: perfect for magic of new beginnings, purification, and renewal.

Dandelion (March to April): Harvest young leaves before flowering; roots in early spring or autumn. Magical uses: wish magic, divination, spring renewal. Violet (March to May): Harvest leaves and flowers throughout spring. Magical uses: love, protection, healing, fairy magic. Nettle (March to May): Harvest young tops before flowering. Wear gloves. Magical uses: protection, breaking hexes, courage. Lemon Balm (April to May): Harvest young leaves before flowering. Magical uses: love, healing, success. Hawthorn Blossom (April to May): Harvest flowers just as they open. Magical uses: fairy magic, heart healing, Beltane rituals. Elderflower (May to June): Harvest flat-topped clusters when fully open and fragrant. Use immediately or dry quickly. Magical uses: love, beauty, fairy magic, Beltane.

Summer Harvest (June to August)

Summer herbs are at their most potent. This is the most important harvesting season for most magical herbs.

Lavender (June to July): Harvest just before flowers fully open, when buds show color. Cut long stems in the morning. Magical uses: love, peace, purification, sleep. St. John's Wort (June 21 to July): Harvest at the summer solstice or nearest full moon. Flowers release red-purple juice when squeezed. Magical uses: solar healing, protection, midsummer magic. Chamomile (June to August): Harvest fully open flowers when petals begin to reflex backward. Pick in the morning regularly. Magical uses: luck, money, healing, peace. Calendula (June to October): Harvest fully open flowers in the morning. Pick regularly to encourage continued flowering. Magical uses: solar healing, protection, psychic work. Mugwort (July to August): Harvest flowering tops just as flowers begin to open, at the full moon if possible. Magical uses: psychic vision, dreams, divination, astral travel. Yarrow (June to August): Harvest flower heads at the full moon during summer. Magical uses: love, healing, divination, courage. Rosemary (June to August): Harvest flowering tips for maximum potency. Cut no more than one-third of each branch. Magical uses: protection, memory, purification, mental clarity. Peppermint (June to August): Harvest just before flowering for maximum menthol content. Magical uses: mental clarity, travel, money. Basil (June to September): Harvest regularly by pinching off growing tips to prevent flowering. Magical uses: love, money, protection. Thyme (June to July): Harvest just before or during flowering. Magical uses: courage, purification, healing.

Autumn Harvest (September to November)

Autumn herbs carry deep, concentrated, grounding energy: perfect for magic of completion, release, and ancestor work.

Valerian Root (September to October): Harvest roots in autumn of the plant's second year. Dig entire root, wash, and dry at low temperature. Magical uses: sleep, love, purification. Dandelion Root (September to October): Harvest when root is most concentrated. Dig deeply for the entire taproot. Magical uses: wish magic, divination, Jupiter energy. Burdock Root (September to October): Harvest roots of first-year plants. Magical uses: protection, purification, healing. Elderberry (August to September): Harvest ripe purple-black berry clusters. Never eat raw. Magical uses: protection, healing, Samhain rituals. Hawthorn Berries (September to October): Harvest after the first frost when fully ripe. Magical uses: heart healing, fairy magic, Samhain. Rose Hips (September to October): Harvest after the first frost when fully red and slightly soft. Magical uses: love, healing, Venus energy. Angelica Root (September to October): Harvest roots of second-year plants before flowering. Magical uses: angelic protection, healing, Sun energy.

Winter Harvest (December to February)

Few herbs are harvested in winter, but those that are carry concentrated energy shaped by cold and darkness.

Evergreen Herbs (December to February): Rosemary, thyme, and sage can be harvested in small quantities. Use for winter protection and purification rituals. Pine Needles and Resin (December to February): Harvest fresh pine needles and collect resin throughout winter. Pine carries the energy of endurance and vitality. Birch Bark and Twigs (January to February): Harvest small amounts in late winter just before the sap rises. Associated with new beginnings and purification for Imbolc. Dried Herb Maintenance: Review your dried herb stores, discard anything that has lost potency, and plan your spring planting.

Optimal Harvest Times for Key Magical Herbs

Mugwort: Full moon, Moon in Cancer or Pisces. Cut flowering tops just as flowers begin to open. Lavender: Full moon or waxing gibbous, just before flowers fully open. Morning harvest. Chamomile: Full moon, flowers fully open with petals beginning to reflex. Morning harvest. St. John's Wort: Summer solstice or nearest full moon, flowers releasing red-purple juice. Yarrow: Full moon during summer. Cut entire flower head with stem. Calendula: Full moon, fully open flowers in the morning. Valerian Root: Waning moon in autumn, second-year plants. Dandelion Root: Waning moon in autumn or early spring. Elderflower: Full moon in early summer, fully open and fragrant clusters.

Preserving Your Harvest

Air Drying: Tie in small bundles and hang upside down in a warm, dry, ventilated space away from sunlight. Most herbs dry in 1-3 weeks. Dehydrator: Use lowest temperature setting (35-40C) to preserve aromatic compounds. Tincturing: Preserve fresh herbs in alcohol immediately after harvest to capture the full spectrum of compounds. Infused Oils: Cover herbs with carrier oil and infuse 4-6 weeks cold, or 4-8 hours in a double boiler. Freezing: Basil, lemon balm, and mint preserve better frozen than dried.

Building Your Seasonal Harvest Practice

The seasonal harvest calendar is a living guide you adapt to your specific climate and garden. Pay attention to the actual state of your plants rather than the calendar date: a plant tells you when it is ready through its appearance, scent, and the quality of its energy when you touch it. Keep a seasonal harvest journal recording what you harvested, when, under what moon phase, and how the herbs performed in your magical work. This is the deepest form of herbal knowledge: not learned from books but grown through years of patient, attentive relationship with the living plant world. For deepening that relationship, I have found the Sacred Space Cleanse ritual kit beautifully aligns with the purification magic of spring herbs, and the 13 New Moon Rituals guide offers a structure for timing herbal work with lunar phases just as this calendar describes. The Emotional Filter Ritual kit resonates with the protective qualities of herbs like nettle and yarrow, while the Cosmic Alignment Ritual kit connects to that deeper sense of timing with celestial cycles. And for those moments of quiet reflection after a day of harvesting, the Void Whisper audio helps anchor the subtle energy work that follows any deep plant communion.

The Way to Deepen Your Practice: 6 Grounded Anchors

When a practice feels restless or distracted, it is rarely a lack of discipline. More often, your nervous system is simply waiting for a physical cue that it is safe to arrive.

Insight remains abstract until it touches your physical world. Reflecting As Above, So Below, a sacred practice begins wherever you set an intentional boundary—draping a woven cloth where noise stops, attuning to an acoustic frequency, or taking up raw materials to forge an implement with your own hands.

You do not need an entire sanctuary built at once. A single deliberate anchor is enough to call you back home to yourself.
