Seasonal Sabbat Altars: How to Build Sacred Space for Each Turn of the Wheel
Share
The eight sabbats of the Wheel of the Year — the seasonal celebrations that mark the turning points of the solar cycle — each call for a specific altar that reflects the energies, themes, and natural symbols of that particular moment in the year. Seasonal sabbat altars are among the most beautiful and most energetically resonant altar practices available, because they align the practitioner's sacred space with the actual energetic conditions of the natural world at each point in the year — creating a living, seasonal practice that deepens the practitioner's relationship with the cycles of nature and the wisdom they carry.
The Dark Half of the Year
Samhain (October 31) — the ancestor festival, the thinning of the veil. Altar colors: black, orange, deep purple. Objects: ancestor photographs, skull imagery, pomegranates, apples, dried leaves, black candles. Yule (Winter Solstice) — the return of the light, the longest night. Altar colors: red, green, gold, white. Objects: evergreen branches, holly, mistletoe, gold and silver candles, a Yule log, sun imagery. Imbolc (February 1-2) — the first stirring of spring, the return of the light. Altar colors: white, pale yellow, pale green. Objects: snowdrops or early spring flowers, a Brigid's cross, white candles, seeds.
The Light Half of the Year
Ostara (Spring Equinox) — the balance of light and dark, the full arrival of spring. Altar colors: yellow, green, pink, lavender. Objects: eggs, spring flowers, hare imagery, pastel candles, seeds and soil. Beltane (May 1) — the peak of spring, the fire festival of fertility and passion. Altar colors: red, white, green. Objects: flowers (especially hawthorn), ribbons, fire imagery, red and white candles. Litha (Summer Solstice) — the peak of the sun's power, the longest day. Altar colors: gold, yellow, orange.
