Seasonal Space Clearing: How to Reset Your Home's Energy with the Seasons
Share
The seasons are not simply changes in weather; they are energetic shifts — fundamental transitions in the quality of energy available in the natural world that affect every living system, including the human body, mind, and spirit, and the spaces in which human life unfolds. Every ancient culture recognized the significance of the seasonal transitions and developed ceremonies for marking them, honoring them, and aligning human life with the energetic qualities of each new season. Seasonal space clearing is the practice of aligning the energetic quality of the home with the energetic quality of the season — clearing the accumulated energy of the departing season and establishing the energetic conditions most supportive of the arriving one.
The Four Seasonal Clearings
Spring Clearing (Spring Equinox, approximately March 20): Spring is the season of new beginnings, fresh starts, and the return of vitality after the stillness of winter. The spring clearing is the most comprehensive of the four seasonal clearings — the energetic equivalent of spring cleaning. Clear the accumulated heaviness of winter: the stagnant energy of months spent indoors, the residue of winter illness and winter darkness, the energetic weight of the year's accumulated difficulties. Open every window, clear every corner, and establish the energetic conditions for growth, renewal, and fresh beginning. Key intention: Release, renewal, new beginnings, vitality.
Summer Clearing (Summer Solstice, approximately June 21): Summer is the season of abundance, expansion, and the full expression of vitality. The summer clearing honors the peak of the year's energy and establishes the home as a space that can hold and circulate the abundance of the season. Clear any blocks to the free flow of energy and establish the conditions for joy, creativity, and the full enjoyment of life's abundance. Key intention: Abundance, joy, creativity, expansion, celebration.
Autumn Clearing (Autumn Equinox, approximately September 22): Autumn is the season of harvest, gratitude, and the beginning of the inward turn. The autumn clearing honors what has been accomplished in the year and releases what is no longer needed as the year moves toward its close. Clear the home of what has accumulated through the active months of spring and summer and establish the conditions for the deeper, more inward quality of life that autumn and winter support. Key intention: Harvest, gratitude, release, preparation for the inward turn.
Winter Clearing (Winter Solstice, approximately December 21): Winter is the season of stillness, rest, and the deep inward journey. The winter clearing honors the darkness and stillness of the season and establishes the home as a genuine sanctuary of warmth, rest, and the quiet nourishment of the inner life. Clear the accumulated energy of the year and establish the conditions for the deep rest and renewal that winter is designed to provide. Key intention: Stillness, rest, warmth, inner nourishment, the quiet of the deep year.
