Setsubun Magic: Protection Spells and Negativity Clearing Work

BY NICOLE LAU

Setsubun magic focuses on active banishment, protection setting, and clearing negativity before spring's new cycle begins. The techniques used in the festivalβ€”throwing beans, shouting, directional alignment, and threshold protectionβ€”can be adapted into powerful spells for clearing your space, protecting your energy, and ensuring a clean start for the year ahead.

From oni banishment spells to lucky direction magic, from threshold protection to negativity clearing work, Setsubun offers fierce yet accessible methods for purification and protection.

Spell 1: The Oni Banishment Spell

Purpose: Drive out specific negativity, bad habits, or toxic patterns

What you need:

  • Roasted soybeans (or peanuts, dried corn)
  • Paper and pen
  • Oni mask or image (optional)

The spell:

  1. Write what you're banishing on paper (be specific: "my self-doubt," "toxic relationship with X," "procrastination")
  2. Place the paper on the floor or attach to oni mask
  3. Hold a handful of beans
  4. Shout: "Oni wa soto!" (Demons out!) and throw beans at the paper/mask
  5. Repeat 3 times, throwing with increasing force
  6. Shout: "You are banished! You have no power here! Leave now!"
  7. Throw a final handful
  8. Burn the paper or tear it up and dispose of it outside your home
  9. Sweep up the beans and throw them outside

Spell 2: The Lucky Direction Alignment Spell

Purpose: Align with the year's energy and download good fortune

What you need:

  • Compass or phone app
  • The year's lucky direction (2026 = South-southeast)
  • Ehomaki (sushi roll) or any round food
  • Your intention for the year

The spell:

  1. On Setsubun evening, determine the exact lucky direction
  2. Sit or stand facing that direction
  3. Hold your food and silently state your intention/wish
  4. Say: "I align with the energy of [year]. I face the direction of fortune. I receive the blessings of the year god. My wish is heard."
  5. Eat the food in complete silence, maintaining focus on the direction
  6. Don't speak, don't look away, don't stop until finished
  7. When done, bow to the direction in gratitude
  8. Your wish is now aligned with the year's flow

Spell 3: The Threshold Protection Spell

Purpose: Protect your home's entrance from negative energy

What you need:

  • Sardine (or sardine oil, or strong-smelling fish)
  • Holly branch (or any thorny/spiky plant)
  • Red string or ribbon
  • Salt

The spell:

  1. On Setsubun, tie the sardine head and holly together with red string
  2. As you tie, say: "This threshold is protected. Negativity cannot enter. Oni are repelled. Only good fortune may cross."
  3. Hang above your door (outside if possible, inside if not)
  4. Sprinkle salt across the threshold
  5. Visualize a protective barrier forming
  6. Leave up for at least 3 days, ideally until the next full moon

Modern adaptation: Use essential oils (peppermint, eucalyptus) and a protective plant (rosemary, cactus)

Spell 4: The Bean Blessing Spell

Purpose: Create blessed beans for ongoing protection throughout the year

What you need:

  • Roasted soybeans
  • Small cloth bag or jar
  • Your intention

The spell:

  1. After your Setsubun bean throwing, collect some unused beans
  2. Hold them in your hands and say: "These beans drove out demons. These beans carry protective power. I bless them for the year ahead."
  3. Breathe on them three times (your breath carries intention)
  4. Store in a cloth bag or jar
  5. Keep on your altar or carry with you
  6. Use throughout the year: throw one at negativity, eat one for courage, place one in corners for protection

Spell 5: The Vocal Banishment Spell

Purpose: Use your voice to clear stagnant energy

What you need:

  • Your voice
  • Conviction
  • Privacy (or a place where you can shout)

The spell:

  1. Stand in the center of your space
  2. Take a deep breath
  3. Shout as loud as you can: "ONI WA SOTO!"
  4. Feel the sound vibration breaking up stagnant energy
  5. Move through each room, shouting in each one
  6. End at your entrance, shouting outward
  7. Then shout inward: "FUKU WA UCHI!" (Fortune in!)
  8. The louder and more committed, the more effective

If you can't shout: Clap loudly, ring bells, bang potsβ€”sound is the key

Spell 6: The Shadow Integration Spell

Purpose: Work with your "oni" (shadow aspects) rather than just banishing them

What you need:

  • Oni mask or drawing
  • Mirror
  • Candle
  • Journal

The spell:

  1. Light a candle in front of a mirror
  2. Put on the oni mask or hold the drawing
  3. Look at yourself in the mirror
  4. Ask: "What part of me is this oni? What am I afraid of? What am I rejecting?"
  5. Journal the answers
  6. Say: "I see you, shadow. I acknowledge you. You are part of me, but you don't control me. I integrate your power without your destruction."
  7. Remove the mask
  8. Look at your true face
  9. Say: "I am whole. Light and shadow. I accept all of me."

This is advanced work: Not all oni need to be banished; some need to be understood and integrated.

Spell 7: The Spring Preparation Spell

Purpose: Clear your energy field for spring's new growth

What you need:

  • White candle
  • Bowl of water
  • Salt
  • Beans

The spell:

  1. On Setsubun evening, light the white candle
  2. Add salt to the water, saying: "I purify my energy. I clear my field. I prepare for spring."
  3. Wash your hands in the salt water
  4. Anoint your forehead, heart, and solar plexus
  5. Hold beans in your hands and say: "What must leave, I banish. What must come, I welcome. I am ready for spring's growth."
  6. Throw the beans outside your door
  7. Pour the water outside (returning it to earth)
  8. Blow out the candle

Working With Oni Energy

Understanding your personal oni:

  • Red oni = your anger, passion turned destructive
  • Blue oni = your sadness, depression, emotional stagnation
  • Green oni = your envy, comparison, jealousy
  • Black oni = your fear, unknown shadows
  • Yellow oni = your greed, attachment, hoarding

Banish or integrate?

  • Banish: external negativity, toxic people, harmful patterns
  • Integrate: shadow aspects, repressed emotions, denied parts of self

The Magic of Collective Banishment

Setsubun magic is amplified when done with others:

  • Gather friends/family for group bean throwing
  • Shout together (collective voice is exponentially more powerful)
  • Each person banishes their own oni
  • Support each other's clearing
  • Celebrate together afterward

Timing Your Setsubun Magic

Best time: February 3rd evening (before midnight)

Also powerful: Any threshold moment (New Year, birthday, moving, job change)

Emergency clearing: Anytime you need to banish negativity (use the techniques even if not Setsubun)

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
