The Shadow Integration Tarot Spread: Welcome Your Darkness Home
Share
Integration — the actual, lived, embodied process of welcoming the shadow home — is the goal toward which all the shadow work in this guide has been moving. It is not the suppression of darkness, not the performance of having done the work, not the intellectual understanding of the shadow's existence. It is the genuine, felt, body-present experience of the self as a complete, complex, shadow-inclusive whole — of knowing and accepting that the same person who is capable of love is also capable of anger, that the person who aspires to generosity also has needs and limits, that the person who pursues light also contains the full range of human experience. Integration does not produce a purified or simplified self; it produces a more complete one. The integrated person is not less complex than before the work; they are more spacious, because they no longer need to expend the enormous energy required to keep the shadow contained and hidden.
Internal Locus Psychology connects integration directly to worth: the person whose worth is unconditional and internal can afford to know all of themselves, because no part of what is discovered threatens the fundamental okayness of the self. Integration becomes possible when worth is no longer contingent on being only the good parts.
The Shadow Integration Tarot Spread
A six-card spread for welcoming the darkness home into genuine wholeness.
Card 1 — The Shadow That Has Been Most Resistant to Integration: What specific aspect of the shadow — the quality, pattern, wound, or part of the self — has been most persistently difficult to genuinely welcome? What has remained at the edge of the circle rather than inside it?
Card 2 — What Has Made This Integration Difficult: What specific belief, fear, or internal dynamic has made the integration of this particular shadow material so resistant? Why has this specific darkness been so hard to welcome home?
Card 3 — What This Shadow Has Been Protecting: Behind even the most difficult shadow material, there is something being protected. What genuine need, authentic quality, or legitimate self-expression is the most resistant shadow protecting?
Card 4 — What Genuine Welcome Looks Like: Not the concept of integration, but the specific, embodied, felt quality of genuinely welcoming this particular darkness. What does it actually look like to say to this specific shadow: "You belong here. You are part of me. You are welcome"?
Card 5 — What Becomes Available When This Is Integrated: What specific capacity, freedom, or aliveness becomes available when this shadow is genuinely integrated rather than maintained in exile? What is the gift of the integration?
Card 6 — The Wholeness That Is Becoming: What quality of genuine, shadow-inclusive wholeness is becoming available through the accumulation of this integration work? What is the specific self that is emerging — more complete, more spacious, more genuinely capable of the full range of human experience?

- Can I locate a moment of genuine, unsentimental self-acceptance — a moment when I knew something difficult about myself and it was simply okay? What was that like?
