Solve et Coagula: Dissolve and Rebuild

BY NICOLE LAU

Solve et Coagula: Dissolve and Rebuild

"Solve et Coagula" - Dissolve and Coagulate. This is the fundamental maxim of alchemy, the core process of all transformation.

You cannot create the new without dissolving the old. You cannot build gold without first breaking down the lead.

This is the rhythm of all growth: destruction and creation, death and rebirth, dissolution and solidification.

This is your complete guide to Solve et Coagula.

What is Solve et Coagula?

Solve (Dissolve)

  • Break down, deconstruct, dissolve
  • Release old forms and structures
  • Let go, surrender, allow dissolution
  • Death of the old

Coagula (Coagulate)

  • Rebuild, reconstruct, solidify
  • Create new forms and structures
  • Integrate, embody, manifest
  • Birth of the new

The Complete Cycle

Solve β†’ Coagula β†’ Solve β†’ Coagula β†’ endless cycle of transformation

Why Both Are Necessary

You Cannot Skip Solve

Many people want to jump straight to Coagula (building the new) without Solve (dissolving the old):

  • Trying to build new habits without releasing old ones
  • Wanting new relationships without healing old wounds
  • Seeking enlightenment without ego death

This doesn't work. The old must dissolve first.

You Cannot Stay in Solve

Some people dissolve everything but never rebuild:

  • Endless deconstruction, no creation
  • Perpetual breakdown, no integration
  • Always dissolving, never solidifying

This is incomplete. You must also Coagulate.

Solve et Coagula in the Seven Stages

Stages 1-3: Solve (Dissolution)

  • Calcination: Burn away the false
  • Dissolution: Dissolve rigid structures
  • Separation: Separate pure from impure

These are the Solve stages - breaking down the old.

Stage 4: The Turning Point

  • Conjunction: The dissolved elements begin to reunite
  • The shift from Solve to Coagula

Stages 5-7: Coagula (Solidification)

  • Fermentation: New life emerges
  • Distillation: Purification and refinement
  • Coagulation: The Philosopher's Stone solidifies

These are the Coagula stages - building the new.

How to Practice Solve et Coagula

Step 1: Identify What Needs to Dissolve

Ask yourself:

  • What old belief/pattern/identity is blocking me?
  • What needs to be released?
  • What's ready to dissolve?

Step 2: Consciously Dissolve (Solve)

Methods:

  • Fire: Burn it away (write it down, burn the paper)
  • Water: Wash it away (ritual bath, crying, emotional release)
  • Air: Breathe it out (breathwork, speaking it aloud)
  • Earth: Bury it (literally or symbolically)

Step 3: Rest in the Void

After dissolution, there's a void - the space between Solve and Coagula:

  • Don't rush to fill it
  • Rest in the emptiness
  • Trust the process
  • The new will emerge naturally

Step 4: Identify What Wants to Coagulate

Ask yourself:

  • What wants to be born?
  • What new form is emerging?
  • What am I becoming?

Step 5: Consciously Coagulate

Methods:

  • Intention: Set clear intention for the new
  • Action: Take concrete steps to build it
  • Ritual: Mark the solidification ceremonially
  • Embodiment: Live as the new you

  • Not resting in the void

Mistake 3: Staying in Solve Forever

  • Endless deconstruction
  • Never rebuilding
  • Truth: You must also Coagulate

The Void Between Solve and Coagula

The most important part is often the space between:

  • After dissolution, before solidification
  • The void, the emptiness, the unknown
  • This is where transformation happens
  • Don't rush through it

Trust the void. The new will emerge when it's ready.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
