Soul Retrieval: Healing Fragmentation & Trauma

BY NICOLE LAU
In shamanic understanding, trauma doesn't just hurt us psychologicallyβit fragments us spiritually. When we experience overwhelming pain, shock, or betrayal, a part of our soul splits off and hides, taking our vitality, joy, and wholeness with it.
This is called soul loss, and it's one of the primary causes of illness, depression, and feeling "not quite here" in shamanic diagnosis.
But what's lost can be found. What's fragmented can be made whole. This is the work of soul retrievalβone of the most profound healing practices in shamanism.
This is your guide to understanding soul loss and the sacred work of bringing yourself home.
What Is Soul Loss?
The Shamanic Understanding
In shamanic cosmology, the soul is not a single, indivisible thing. It's more like a constellation of energy, consciousness, and essence. When we experience trauma, parts of this constellation can:
- Flee to safety (dissociation in psychological terms)
- Be stolen or given away (in abusive relationships, manipulation)
- Get stuck in the past (frozen at the moment of trauma)
- Hide in non-ordinary reality (waiting until it's safe to return)
This is a survival mechanism. The soul part leaves so the rest of you can survive the unbearable.
What Causes Soul Loss?
Soul loss can occur from:
- Trauma: Abuse, assault, accidents, violence, war
- Grief and loss: Death of loved ones, divorce, abandonment
- Betrayal: Broken trust, infidelity, deception
- Shock: Sudden, overwhelming events
- Surgery or medical procedures: Especially under anesthesia
- Addiction: Giving away pieces of yourself to substances or behaviors
- Toxic relationships: Abusive partners, narcissistic parents, energy vampires
- Soul contracts or agreements: Unconsciously giving parts away
- Childhood experiences: Neglect, abandonment, not being seen
Even "small" traumas can cause soul loss if they're overwhelming to the person experiencing them.
Signs of Soul Loss
You may have experienced soul loss if you:
- Feel like a part of you is missing or "not quite here"
- Can't remember parts of your childhood (memory gaps)
- Feel numb, disconnected, or dissociated
- Lack vitality, energy, or life force
- Struggle with depression or chronic illness
- Feel like you "left" during a traumatic event and never fully came back
- Have a sense of incompleteness
- Can't move forward in life (stuck in the past)
- Feel like you're watching your life from outside
- Have addictions or compulsive behaviors (trying to fill the void)
- Repeatedly say "I lost myself" or "I gave myself away"
The Void Left Behind
When a soul part leaves, it creates a void. This void can be filled with:
- Addictions (substances, behaviors, relationships)
- Intrusions (negative energies, entities, or others' energy)
- Illness (physical or mental)
- Emptiness and despair
Soul retrieval fills the void with what belongs there: YOU.
What Is Soul Retrieval?
Soul retrieval is a shamanic healing practice in which:
- The shaman journeys to non-ordinary reality
- Locates the lost soul part(s)
- Negotiates for their return (they must be willing)
- Brings them back to the person
- Blows them into the body (usually through crown and heart)
- Helps the person integrate the returned parts
The result: Restoration of wholeness, vitality, and presence.
The Soul Retrieval Process
Step 1: Diagnosis
The shaman journeys to ask:
- Has this person experienced soul loss?
- How many parts are missing?
- Where are they?
- What caused them to leave?
- Are they ready to return?
Step 2: The Journey
The shaman enters trance and journeys to find the soul parts. They might be:
- In the past: Frozen at the moment of trauma (a child hiding, a teenager fleeing)
- In nature: Hiding in a forest, cave, or body of water
- With someone else: Given away or taken in a relationship
- In the Upper or Lower World: Seeking refuge with spirits
- Fragmented: Scattered across multiple locations
Step 3: Negotiation and Retrieval
The shaman:
- Approaches the soul part with respect
- Explains that it's safe to return now
- Asks if it's willing to come back
- Listens to what it needs (promises, changes, healing)
- Gathers the soul part (often appears as a child, light, or essence)
- Returns through the portal
Step 4: Restoration
The shaman:
- Blows the soul part into the person's crown chakra (top of head)
- Blows it into the heart chakra (center of chest)
- Seals it in with breath and intention
- May use rattle, song, or other methods to integrate it
Step 5: Integration
The person must:
- Welcome the soul part back
- Honor what it experienced
- Make space for it in their life
- Follow any guidance received
- Allow time for integration (days to months)
What Happens After Soul Retrieval?
Immediate Effects
People often report:
- Feeling more present and "here"
- Increased energy and vitality
- Emotions returning (if they were numb)
- Memories surfacing (sometimes difficult ones)
- A sense of wholeness or completion
- Physical sensations (warmth, tingling, fullness in chest)
Integration Period
The weeks and months after soul retrieval can be:
- Profound and healing
- Challenging (the returned part brings its experiences)
- Transformative (life changes to accommodate wholeness)
Common experiences:
- Needing more rest
- Emotional releases (crying, anger, grief)
- Memories returning
- Relationships shifting
- Old patterns no longer fitting
- Increased creativity or joy
- Feeling "too much" at first (after being numb)
Long-Term Changes
- Greater sense of self
- Ability to be present
- Reduced depression or anxiety
- Improved relationships
- Increased vitality and health
- Ability to move forward in life
- Feeling "like myself again" or "more myself than ever"
Self Soul Retrieval
While traditional soul retrieval is done by a trained shaman for another person, you can do preliminary work yourself:
Journey for Your Own Soul Parts
- Set intention: "I journey to retrieve a soul part that's ready to return"
- Enter trance through drumming
- Ask your power animal or guide to help
- Look for a part of yourself (often appears as you at a younger age)
- Ask: "Are you a part of me? Are you ready to come home?"
- If yes, bring them back with you
- Visualize them merging with you (into your heart or whole body)
- Welcome them home
Inner Child Work
Many soul parts are inner children. Healing practices:
- Visualize your younger self
- Tell them: "I'm here now. You're safe. I've got you."
- Ask what they need
- Give it to them (love, protection, permission to play, etc.)
- Invite them to live in your heart
Reclaiming What You Gave Away
If you gave soul parts away in relationships:
- Identify where you gave yourself away
- Journey or visualize going to that person/situation
- Say: "I take back what's mine. I release what's yours."
- Visualize your energy returning to you (often as light or essence)
- Cut any cords or attachments
- Reclaim your power
When to Seek a Shamanic Practitioner
Consider working with a trained practitioner if:
- You've experienced severe trauma
- You can't access the soul parts yourself
- You need support and witnessing
- You want a more complete retrieval
- You're dealing with complex or multiple traumas
A skilled practitioner can:
- Journey more deeply
- Retrieve multiple parts at once
- Provide integration support
- Hold sacred space for your healing
Integration Practices
After Soul Retrieval (Self or Practitioner-Led)
- Rest: Give yourself time to integrate
- Journal: Write about what you're experiencing
- Honor the returned part: Do things it loves (play, create, rest)
- Set boundaries: Protect your wholeness
- Avoid re-traumatization: Stay away from toxic people/situations
- Seek support: Therapy, trusted friends, spiritual community
- Be patient: Integration takes time
Welcoming Ceremony
Create a ritual to welcome your soul part home:
- Light a candle
- Speak aloud: "Welcome home. I've been waiting for you. You're safe now."
- Make promises about how you'll care for this part
- Offer something it loves (music, art, nature, play)
- Seal the ceremony with gratitude
Soul Retrieval and Therapy
Soul retrieval complements (but doesn't replace) therapy:
- Therapy: Processes trauma cognitively and emotionally
- Soul retrieval: Addresses the spiritual dimension of trauma
Many people find that soul retrieval makes therapy more effectiveβthey finally have the energy and presence to do the work.
Ethical Considerations
- Never retrieve soul parts for someone without permission
- Don't force a soul part to return (it must be willing)
- Respect the person's process (integration is their work)
- Don't promise miracles (soul retrieval is powerful but not magic)
- Refer to therapy when needed (especially for severe trauma)
Final Thoughts
Soul loss is not a sign of weakness. It's a sign that you survived something that would have destroyed you if you'd stayed fully present for it. Your soul parts left to protect you.
But you don't have to stay fragmented forever. What was lost can be found. What fled can come home. You can be whole again.
Soul retrieval is not about going back to who you were before the trauma. It's about becoming who you're meant to beβwith all your parts, all your experiences, all your wisdom, all your scars, all your strength.
Whole. Present. Here. Alive.
Welcome home.
