Sun Salutations and Solar Energy: Honoring Ra
Share
BY NICOLE LAU
Every morning, millions of yoga practitioners around the world perform Surya NamaskarβSun Salutations. Most know it as a warm-up sequence, a way to build heat and prepare the body for practice. But Sun Salutations are far more than physical exercise. They are an ancient ritual of solar worship, a moving prayer to the life-giving power of the sun.
The practice originates from Vedic tradition, where the sun (Surya) was revered as the source of all life, consciousness, and spiritual illumination. In ancient Egypt, the sun god Ra was honored as the supreme deity, the creator who brought light to the world each dawn. Across cultures and millennia, humanity has recognized the sun as the ultimate symbol of divine power, vitality, and enlightenment.
When you practice Sun Salutations with awareness of their sacred origins, you're not just moving your bodyβyou're participating in an ancient ritual of gratitude, activation, and alignment with solar energy. You're honoring Ra, Surya, Apollo, and all manifestations of the solar divine.
This article explores the deeper meaning of Sun Salutations, how to practice them as sacred ritual, and how to work with solar energy for vitality, confidence, and spiritual illumination.
The Sun as Sacred Symbol
Before we explore the practice, we need to understand what the sun represents across spiritual traditions:
The Sun in Vedic Tradition
In Hindu philosophy, Surya (the sun) is both a deity and a symbol of the supreme consciousness that illuminates all existence. The Gayatri Mantra, one of the most sacred Vedic chants, is a prayer to the solar deity for spiritual illumination.
The sun represents:
- Atman: The eternal self, the divine spark within
- Consciousness: The light of awareness that illuminates experience
- Prana: Life force energy that sustains all living beings
- Dharma: Right action, duty, and cosmic order
The Sun in Egyptian Tradition
Ra (or Re) was the ancient Egyptian sun god, the king of the gods, and the creator of all life. Each day, Ra was believed to journey across the sky in his solar barque, bringing light and life to the world. Each night, he traveled through the underworld, battling chaos and darkness, to be reborn at dawn.
Ra represents:
- Creation: The generative power that brings life into being
- Sovereignty: Divine authority and rulership
- Resurrection: The daily death and rebirth, the eternal cycle
- Order: Ma'at, cosmic balance and truth
Solar Energy in Astrology
In astrology, the Sun represents:
- The Self: Your core identity, ego, and life purpose
- Vitality: Physical energy, health, and life force
- Consciousness: Awareness, will, and creative power
- Authority: Leadership, confidence, and personal power
- The Father: Masculine energy, structure, and guidance
Your Sun sign in astrology reveals your essential nature, your soul's purpose, and how you shine your light in the world.
The Anatomy of Sun Salutations
Traditional Surya Namaskar consists of 12 poses performed in a flowing sequence, representing the 12 solar months, the 12 zodiac signs, and the 12 hours of daylight. Each pose has a specific meaning and energetic function.
The 12 Poses of Surya Namaskar A (Traditional)
- Pranamasana (Prayer Pose): Standing at attention, hands in prayer at heart. Honoring the divine within and without.
- Hasta Uttanasana (Raised Arms Pose): Arms reach up and back. Opening to receive solar energy, expanding the heart.
- Uttanasana (Standing Forward Fold): Folding forward, surrendering. Bowing to the earth, releasing ego.
- Ashwa Sanchalanasana (Equestrian Pose/Low Lunge): Right leg back, left knee bent, heart lifted. Balancing earth and sky, stability and expansion.
- Dandasana (Plank Pose): Body in one strong line. Cultivating strength, discipline, and alignment.
- Ashtanga Namaskara (Eight-Limbed Pose): Knees, chest, chin to ground. Offering eight parts of the body in devotion.
- Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose): Chest lifts, heart opens. Rising like the sun, awakening solar plexus power.
- Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog): Inverted V-shape. Mountain pose, grounding and energizing simultaneously.
- Ashwa Sanchalanasana (Equestrian Pose): Left leg forward now. Balancing the opposite side.
- Uttanasana (Standing Forward Fold): Both feet forward, folding. Returning to surrender.
- Hasta Uttanasana (Raised Arms Pose): Rising up, arms overhead. Reaching toward the light.
- Pranamasana (Prayer Pose): Returning to center, hands at heart. Completing the cycle, integrating the energy.
This completes one half-round. A full round repeats the sequence with the opposite leg leading.
The Energetics of Sun Salutations
Sun Salutations work on multiple energetic levels:
Physical Level
- Warms the body and builds internal heat (tapas)
- Activates circulation and cardiovascular system
- Stretches and strengthens all major muscle groups
- Lubricates joints and increases flexibility
- Stimulates digestive fire (agni)
Energetic Level

Practicing Sun Salutations as Sacred Ritual
To transform Sun Salutations from exercise into ritual, practice with these elements:
Timing: Dawn Practice
Traditionally, Sun Salutations are practiced at sunrise, the sacred time when Ra emerges from the underworld and Surya begins his daily journey across the sky. This is when solar energy is most potent and receptive.
If sunrise practice isn't possible, practice facing east (the direction of the rising sun) at any time of day.
Intention: Honoring the Sun
Before beginning, set a clear intention:
"I honor the sun, the source of all life and light. I align my energy with solar power. I awaken my inner fire. I offer this practice in gratitude for the gift of life."
Mantra: The Surya Mantras
Each of the 12 poses has a corresponding mantraβa name of the sun god. Chanting these mantras (aloud or silently) as you move through the sequence activates the spiritual dimension of the practice.
The 12 Surya Mantras:
- Om Mitraya Namaha - Salutations to the friend of all
- Om Ravaye Namaha - Salutations to the shining one
- Om Suryaya Namaha - Salutations to he who induces activity
- Om Bhanave Namaha - Salutations to he who illumines
- Om Khagaya Namaha - Salutations to he who moves through the sky
- Om Pushne Namaha - Salutations to the giver of strength and nourishment
- Om Hiranyagarbhaya Namaha - Salutations to the golden cosmic self
- Om Marichaye Namaha - Salutations to the lord of the dawn
- Om Adityaya Namaha - Salutations to the son of Aditi, the cosmic mother
- Om Savitre Namaha - Salutations to the stimulating power of the sun
- Om Arkaya Namaha - Salutations to he who is worthy of praise
- Om Bhaskaraya Namaha - Salutations to he who leads to enlightenment
Visualization: Solar Energy
As you practice, visualize:
- Golden solar light entering your body with each inhale
- This light filling your solar plexus chakra, creating a ball of golden fire
- The fire spreading through your entire body, energizing every cell
- Your body becoming a vessel of solar power
- Your inner sun shining as brightly as the outer sun
Breath: Solar Breath
Coordinate breath with movement:
- Inhale: Expanding, opening, reaching up (poses 2, 4, 7, 9, 11)
- Exhale: Contracting, folding, grounding down (poses 3, 5, 6, 8, 10)
- Pause: Stillness, integration (poses 1, 12)
The breath becomes the vehicle for solar prana to enter and circulate through your system.
The Solar Plexus Connection
Sun Salutations primarily activate Manipura chakra, the solar plexus, located at the upper abdomen. This is your personal sunβthe center of:
- Personal Power: Your ability to take action and manifest your will
- Confidence: Your sense of self-worth and capability
- Transformation: Your digestive fire (agni) that transforms food into energy and experiences into wisdom
- Willpower: Your discipline and determination
- Identity: Your sense of "I am"
When Manipura is balanced through Sun Salutations, you feel:
- Confident and empowered
- Clear about your purpose and direction
- Able to take action without hesitation
- Warm, energized, and vital
- Digestively healthy and metabolically strong

Energy: Maximum power, peak vitality, full expression
Practice: Dynamic, vigorous practice to harness peak solar energy
Intention: "I embody my full power and shine my brightest"
Sunset (Solar Descent)
Energy: Completion, gratitude, integration
