Sun Salutations and Solar Energy: Honoring Ra

BY NICOLE LAU

Every morning, millions of yoga practitioners around the world perform Surya Namaskarβ€”Sun Salutations. Most know it as a warm-up sequence, a way to build heat and prepare the body for practice. But Sun Salutations are far more than physical exercise. They are an ancient ritual of solar worship, a moving prayer to the life-giving power of the sun.

The practice originates from Vedic tradition, where the sun (Surya) was revered as the source of all life, consciousness, and spiritual illumination. In ancient Egypt, the sun god Ra was honored as the supreme deity, the creator who brought light to the world each dawn. Across cultures and millennia, humanity has recognized the sun as the ultimate symbol of divine power, vitality, and enlightenment.

When you practice Sun Salutations with awareness of their sacred origins, you're not just moving your bodyβ€”you're participating in an ancient ritual of gratitude, activation, and alignment with solar energy. You're honoring Ra, Surya, Apollo, and all manifestations of the solar divine.

This article explores the deeper meaning of Sun Salutations, how to practice them as sacred ritual, and how to work with solar energy for vitality, confidence, and spiritual illumination.

The Sun as Sacred Symbol

Before we explore the practice, we need to understand what the sun represents across spiritual traditions:

The Sun in Vedic Tradition

In Hindu philosophy, Surya (the sun) is both a deity and a symbol of the supreme consciousness that illuminates all existence. The Gayatri Mantra, one of the most sacred Vedic chants, is a prayer to the solar deity for spiritual illumination.

The sun represents:

  • Atman: The eternal self, the divine spark within
  • Consciousness: The light of awareness that illuminates experience
  • Prana: Life force energy that sustains all living beings
  • Dharma: Right action, duty, and cosmic order

The Sun in Egyptian Tradition

Ra (or Re) was the ancient Egyptian sun god, the king of the gods, and the creator of all life. Each day, Ra was believed to journey across the sky in his solar barque, bringing light and life to the world. Each night, he traveled through the underworld, battling chaos and darkness, to be reborn at dawn.

Ra represents:

  • Creation: The generative power that brings life into being
  • Sovereignty: Divine authority and rulership
  • Resurrection: The daily death and rebirth, the eternal cycle
  • Order: Ma'at, cosmic balance and truth

Solar Energy in Astrology

In astrology, the Sun represents:

  • The Self: Your core identity, ego, and life purpose
  • Vitality: Physical energy, health, and life force
  • Consciousness: Awareness, will, and creative power
  • Authority: Leadership, confidence, and personal power
  • The Father: Masculine energy, structure, and guidance

Your Sun sign in astrology reveals your essential nature, your soul's purpose, and how you shine your light in the world.

The Anatomy of Sun Salutations

Traditional Surya Namaskar consists of 12 poses performed in a flowing sequence, representing the 12 solar months, the 12 zodiac signs, and the 12 hours of daylight. Each pose has a specific meaning and energetic function.

The 12 Poses of Surya Namaskar A (Traditional)

  1. Pranamasana (Prayer Pose): Standing at attention, hands in prayer at heart. Honoring the divine within and without.
  2. Hasta Uttanasana (Raised Arms Pose): Arms reach up and back. Opening to receive solar energy, expanding the heart.
  3. Uttanasana (Standing Forward Fold): Folding forward, surrendering. Bowing to the earth, releasing ego.
  4. Ashwa Sanchalanasana (Equestrian Pose/Low Lunge): Right leg back, left knee bent, heart lifted. Balancing earth and sky, stability and expansion.
  5. Dandasana (Plank Pose): Body in one strong line. Cultivating strength, discipline, and alignment.
  6. Ashtanga Namaskara (Eight-Limbed Pose): Knees, chest, chin to ground. Offering eight parts of the body in devotion.
  7. Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose): Chest lifts, heart opens. Rising like the sun, awakening solar plexus power.
  8. Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog): Inverted V-shape. Mountain pose, grounding and energizing simultaneously.
  9. Ashwa Sanchalanasana (Equestrian Pose): Left leg forward now. Balancing the opposite side.
  10. Uttanasana (Standing Forward Fold): Both feet forward, folding. Returning to surrender.
  11. Hasta Uttanasana (Raised Arms Pose): Rising up, arms overhead. Reaching toward the light.
  12. Pranamasana (Prayer Pose): Returning to center, hands at heart. Completing the cycle, integrating the energy.

This completes one half-round. A full round repeats the sequence with the opposite leg leading.

The Energetics of Sun Salutations

Sun Salutations work on multiple energetic levels:

Physical Level

  • Warms the body and builds internal heat (tapas)
  • Activates circulation and cardiovascular system
  • Stretches and strengthens all major muscle groups
  • Lubricates joints and increases flexibility
  • Stimulates digestive fire (agni)

Energetic Level

  • Activates the solar plexus chakra (Manipura) - center of personal power, will, and transformation
  • Moves prana through all chakras in a complete cycle
  • Balances the pingala nadi (solar/masculine energy channel)
  • Generates heat that purifies and transforms
  • Awakens kundalini energy at the base of the spine

Spiritual Level

  • Honors the sun as divine source
  • Aligns individual will with cosmic will
  • Cultivates gratitude for life and light
  • Symbolizes the soul's journey from darkness to illumination
  • Represents the cycle of death and rebirth

Practicing Sun Salutations as Sacred Ritual

To transform Sun Salutations from exercise into ritual, practice with these elements:

Timing: Dawn Practice

Traditionally, Sun Salutations are practiced at sunrise, the sacred time when Ra emerges from the underworld and Surya begins his daily journey across the sky. This is when solar energy is most potent and receptive.

If sunrise practice isn't possible, practice facing east (the direction of the rising sun) at any time of day.

Intention: Honoring the Sun

Before beginning, set a clear intention:

"I honor the sun, the source of all life and light. I align my energy with solar power. I awaken my inner fire. I offer this practice in gratitude for the gift of life."

Mantra: The Surya Mantras

Each of the 12 poses has a corresponding mantraβ€”a name of the sun god. Chanting these mantras (aloud or silently) as you move through the sequence activates the spiritual dimension of the practice.

The 12 Surya Mantras:

  1. Om Mitraya Namaha - Salutations to the friend of all
  2. Om Ravaye Namaha - Salutations to the shining one
  3. Om Suryaya Namaha - Salutations to he who induces activity
  4. Om Bhanave Namaha - Salutations to he who illumines
  5. Om Khagaya Namaha - Salutations to he who moves through the sky
  6. Om Pushne Namaha - Salutations to the giver of strength and nourishment
  7. Om Hiranyagarbhaya Namaha - Salutations to the golden cosmic self
  8. Om Marichaye Namaha - Salutations to the lord of the dawn
  9. Om Adityaya Namaha - Salutations to the son of Aditi, the cosmic mother
  10. Om Savitre Namaha - Salutations to the stimulating power of the sun
  11. Om Arkaya Namaha - Salutations to he who is worthy of praise
  12. Om Bhaskaraya Namaha - Salutations to he who leads to enlightenment

Visualization: Solar Energy

As you practice, visualize:

  • Golden solar light entering your body with each inhale
  • This light filling your solar plexus chakra, creating a ball of golden fire
  • The fire spreading through your entire body, energizing every cell
  • Your body becoming a vessel of solar power
  • Your inner sun shining as brightly as the outer sun

Breath: Solar Breath

Coordinate breath with movement:

  • Inhale: Expanding, opening, reaching up (poses 2, 4, 7, 9, 11)
  • Exhale: Contracting, folding, grounding down (poses 3, 5, 6, 8, 10)
  • Pause: Stillness, integration (poses 1, 12)

The breath becomes the vehicle for solar prana to enter and circulate through your system.

The Solar Plexus Connection

Sun Salutations primarily activate Manipura chakra, the solar plexus, located at the upper abdomen. This is your personal sunβ€”the center of:

  • Personal Power: Your ability to take action and manifest your will
  • Confidence: Your sense of self-worth and capability
  • Transformation: Your digestive fire (agni) that transforms food into energy and experiences into wisdom
  • Willpower: Your discipline and determination
  • Identity: Your sense of "I am"

When Manipura is balanced through Sun Salutations, you feel:

  • Confident and empowered
  • Clear about your purpose and direction
  • Able to take action without hesitation
  • Warm, energized, and vital
  • Digestively healthy and metabolically strong

Working with Solar Energy Throughout the Day

Sun Salutations are most powerful at specific times:

Dawn (Sunrise)

Energy: New beginnings, fresh start, activation

Practice: 3-12 rounds to awaken and energize for the day

Intention: "I greet this new day with vitality and purpose"

Noon (Solar Peak)

Energy: Maximum power, peak vitality, full expression

Practice: Dynamic, vigorous practice to harness peak solar energy

Intention: "I embody my full power and shine my brightest"

Sunset (Solar Descent)

Energy: Completion, gratitude, integration

Practice: Slower, more meditative rounds to honor the day's end

Intention: "I give thanks for this day and release what no longer serves"

The Solar Ritual: Complete Practice

Here's a complete solar ritual practice:

Preparation (5 minutes)

  1. Face east (or toward the sun if visible)
  2. Stand in Tadasana (Mountain Pose)
  3. Close your eyes and take 3 deep breaths
  4. Visualize the sunβ€”either the actual sun or a golden orb of light
  5. Set your intention to honor solar energy
  6. Chant "Om Suryaya Namaha" 3 times

Practice (20-30 minutes)

  1. Perform 12 rounds of Sun Salutations (6 on each side)
  2. Chant the 12 mantras with each round, or use one mantra for all rounds
  3. Maintain awareness of solar plexus chakra throughout
  4. Visualize golden light filling your body
  5. Move with the breath, never forcing

Integration (5-10 minutes)

  1. Lie in Savasana (Corpse Pose)
  2. Feel the heat and energy generated by the practice
  3. Visualize this solar energy integrating into every cell
  4. Rest for at least 5 minutes
  5. When ready, roll to your right side and sit up slowly
  6. Return to seated meditation, hands in prayer at heart
  7. Bow in gratitude: "Thank you, Surya. Thank you, Ra. Thank you, Sun."

Solar Energy for Specific Intentions

You can work with Sun Salutations for specific purposes:

For Confidence and Personal Power

  • Practice with strong, deliberate movements
  • Hold poses longer, especially Warrior variations
  • Focus on solar plexus, visualizing golden fire
  • Chant "Ram" (solar plexus bija mantra) with each exhale

For Vitality and Energy

  • Practice at a vigorous pace
  • Add extra rounds (up to 108 for advanced practitioners)
  • Practice at sunrise for maximum energizing effect
  • Visualize absorbing solar prana with each breath

For Clarity and Illumination

  • Practice slowly and meditatively
  • Pause in each pose to receive insight
  • Focus on third eye chakra as well as solar plexus
  • Ask for guidance: "Illuminate my path. Show me the way."

For Transformation and Purification

  • Practice with the intention of burning away what no longer serves
  • Visualize the heat of practice as purifying fire
  • Use breath of fire (kapalabhati) between rounds
  • Imagine releasing old patterns with each exhale

The Shadow Side of Solar Energy

Like all energies, solar energy has a shadow side. Excessive or imbalanced solar energy can manifest as:

  • Aggression or domination
  • Burnout from overactivity
  • Ego inflation or arrogance
  • Inability to rest or receive
  • Digestive issues from excess heat

If you experience these symptoms, balance solar practice with lunar practice (which we'll explore in the next article), yin yoga, restorative poses, and cooling pranayama.

Moving Forward

In our next article, we'll explore Moon Salutations and Lunar Energy: Honoring Seleneβ€”the complementary practice that balances solar fire with lunar water, action with receptivity, doing with being.

But for now, establish a relationship with the sun through this ancient practice. Let Sun Salutations become your daily ritual of gratitude, activation, and alignment with the source of all life.

Every morning, the sun rises without fail, offering its light freely to all. Your practice is your way of saying: "I see you. I honor you. I receive your gift. And I offer my light in return."

You are a child of the sun. Solar energy flows through your veins. Your inner fire is sacred. Honor it. Tend it. Let it shine. Salute the sun, and become the sun.

As you weave the radiant energy of the Sun God Ra into your daily practice, consider deepening your connection to solar cycles and celestial rhythms with a cosmic alignment ritual kit for syncing with the celestial flow, which beautifully complements the warmth of your Sun Salutations by attuning you to the greater cosmic dance. To channel that vibrant solar vitality into your physical practice, unfurl the om symbol yoga mat, a sacred ground for honoring the light within and above. And when you wish to carry that golden, life-affirming energy into your everyday world, sip from the spirit fire water bottle, a daily reminder of the boundless solar spirit you kindle with each breath and movement.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
