Resistance to protective seals: The hostile spirit has proven capable of penetrating or circumventing the practitioner's protective seals, including the Second Pentacle's suppression and the Fifth Pentacle's ceremonial shield. When protective seals are insufficient to prevent the hostile spirit's harmful activity, the practitioner needs an instrument that addresses the spirit's will rather than merely managing its force.
Escalating hostile activity: The hostile spirit's activity is escalating despite the practitioner's interventions — it is becoming more aggressive, more harmful, and more resistant to the practitioner's defensive measures. Escalation is the clearest sign that the hostile spirit requires the absolute authority of the First Pentacle rather than the measured force of lesser instruments.

The First Pentacle does what no other instrument in the grimoire tradition can do: it collapses the hostile spirit's will to resist entirely, compelling submission without resistance through the absolute authority of Saturn's iron hierarchy. Where banishing pushes the spirit away, binding restricts its action, and protective seals manage its force, the First Pentacle eliminates the hostile will itself — producing a submission so complete that the spirit cannot resume hostile activity as long as the seal's authority is present.
