Tantra: Misunderstood & Misappropriated

BY NICOLE LAU

⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTICE: Tantra is a complex set of Hindu and Buddhist esoteric traditionsβ€”NOT "sacred sexuality" or "spiritual sex." This article corrects massive misconceptions, explains what Tantra actually is, and addresses the harm caused by Western sexualization and appropriation of these sacred traditions.

The Biggest Misconception

When most Western people hear "Tantra," they think of:

  • "Tantric sex" or "sacred sexuality"
  • Prolonged sexual experiences
  • Spiritual sex workshops
  • Sensual massage
  • Sexual techniques for better intimacy

This is almost entirely WRONG and represents one of the most egregious examples of cultural appropriation and misrepresentation.

Actual Tantra is:

  • Complex esoteric Hindu and Buddhist traditions
  • Primarily about spiritual liberation and enlightenment
  • Includes ritual, meditation, mantra, visualization, and philosophy
  • Has strict ethical requirements and guru-disciple relationships
  • Sexuality is a MINOR aspect in SOME schools, highly ritualized and symbolic
  • Sacred traditions that have been grossly distorted

Understanding Actual Tantra

What Tantra Actually Is

Tantra (ΰ€€ΰ€¨ΰ₯ΰ€€ΰ₯ΰ€°) refers to esoteric traditions within Hinduism and Buddhism that emerged around the 5th-9th centuries CE. The word means "loom," "weave," or "system."

Hindu Tantra:

  • Diverse schools and lineages
  • Focus on deity worship, ritual, and spiritual transformation
  • Includes Shaiva (Shiva-focused) and Shakta (Goddess-focused) traditions
  • Complex philosophy and cosmology
  • Requires initiation and guru guidance

Buddhist Tantra (Vajrayana):

  • Esoteric Buddhism practiced in Tibet, Mongolia, Bhutan
  • Complex visualization practices and deity yoga
  • Requires empowerment (wang) from qualified lamas
  • Strict ethical foundation and preliminary practices
  • Goal is enlightenment for the benefit of all beings

Core Elements of Tantra

Mantra:

  • Sacred sounds and syllables
  • Used in meditation and ritual
  • Require proper transmission from teacher

Yantra/Mandala:

  • Sacred geometric diagrams
  • Used for meditation and ritual
  • Represent cosmic principles and deities

Deity Yoga:

  • Visualization and identification with deities
  • Complex practices requiring training
  • Not worship but transformation

Ritual (Puja):

  • Elaborate ceremonies and offerings
  • Specific protocols and procedures
  • Performed by initiated practitioners

Philosophy:

  • Complex metaphysics and cosmology
  • Understanding of consciousness and reality
  • Integration of opposites

The Sexual Aspect: Vastly Overstated

Sexual practices in Tantra:

  • Exist in SOME schools (not all)
  • Are HIGHLY ritualized and symbolic
  • Require extensive preparation and initiation
  • Are about transcending duality, not pleasure
  • Are a MINOR part of a much larger system
  • Are often symbolic or visualized, not literal
  • Have strict ethical requirements
  • Are NOT about "better sex" or "sacred sexuality"

The Western obsession with this tiny aspect while ignoring everything else is:

  • Orientalist and exoticizing
  • Disrespectful to sacred traditions
  • Completely misrepresents Tantra
  • Reflects Western sexual hang-ups more than actual Tantra

How Tantra Was Misappropriated

Colonial and Orientalist Distortion

19th Century:

  • British colonizers encountered Tantric traditions
  • Focused obsessively on sexual aspects
  • Used to justify claims of Indian "degeneracy"
  • Sensationalized and misrepresented
  • Ignored philosophical and spiritual depth

Early 20th Century:

  • Western occultists appropriated Tantric concepts
  • Mixed with Western sexual magic traditions
  • Created hybrid practices not authentic to either tradition

1960s-Present: Complete Distortion

Sexual Revolution Era:

  • Tantra rebranded as "sacred sexuality"
  • Used to justify sexual experimentation
  • Stripped of Hindu/Buddhist context entirely
  • Focused almost exclusively on sex

New Age Movement:

  • "Tantric sex" workshops and retreats
  • Books promising better sex through "Tantra"
  • Massage and sensual practices labeled "Tantric"
  • Complete erasure of actual Tantric traditions

Modern Commodification:

  • "Tantric sex" coaching and classes
  • Expensive retreats promising sexual awakening
  • Products marketed as "Tantric"
  • Complete disconnection from Hindu/Buddhist traditions
  • Often taught by people with no authentic training

What Was Lost

In this appropriation, actual Tantra lost:

  • Hindu and Buddhist religious context
  • Philosophical and metaphysical depth
  • Ritual, mantra, and meditation practices
  • Guru-disciple relationship and proper transmission
  • Ethical foundation and requirements
  • Understanding that it's about spiritual liberation, not sex
  • Respect for sacred traditions
  • Acknowledgment of South Asian origins

The Harm of Tantra Misappropriation

Cultural and Religious Harm

  • Erases Hindu and Buddhist origins
  • Reduces sacred traditions to sex techniques
  • Disrespects South Asian spiritual traditions
  • Perpetuates orientalist stereotypes
  • Contributes to sexualization of South Asian cultures
  • Spreads massive misinformation

Spiritual Harm

  • Treats sacred practices as self-help techniques
  • Removes ethical and spiritual framework
  • Encourages spiritual bypassing through sexuality
  • Leads people away from authentic spiritual practice
  • Trivializes profound traditions

Exploitation and Abuse

"Tantric" workshops and teachers have been associated with:

  • Sexual abuse and exploitation
  • Inappropriate boundary violations
  • Using "Tantra" to justify unethical behavior
  • Vulnerable people being taken advantage of
  • Lack of accountability or oversight

The sexualization of Tantra creates environments where abuse can occur under the guise of "spiritual practice."

Common Misappropriations

"Tantric Sex" Workshops and Coaching

Non-South Asian people offering:

  • "Tantric sex" classes or coaching
  • Weekend workshops on "sacred sexuality"
  • "Tantric massage" services
  • Online courses on "Tantric techniques"

These are NOT authentic Tantra. They are:

  • Western inventions using the Tantra name
  • Cultural appropriation
  • Often exploitative
  • Spreading misinformation

Books and Media

"Tantric sex" books and media that:

  • Focus exclusively on sexuality
  • Ignore Hindu/Buddhist context
  • Written by non-South Asian authors with no authentic training
  • Promise better sex through "ancient techniques"
  • Perpetuate misconceptions

Using "Tantric" as Marketing

  • Products labeled "Tantric"
  • Services marketed as "Tantric massage"
  • Retreats promising "Tantric awakening"
  • Using the term to sell sexuality

What You Should Do Instead

If You're Interested in Actual Tantra

Understand What It Actually Is:

  • Study Hindu and Buddhist Tantric traditions
  • Read authentic texts and scholarly works
  • Learn about the philosophy and practices
  • Understand it's primarily about spiritual liberation

Seek Authentic Teachers:

  • Find qualified Hindu or Buddhist teachers
  • Understand initiation and transmission are required
  • Be prepared for years of study and practice
  • Respect that some teachings are not for outsiders

Acknowledge Origins:

  • Always state Tantra is Hindu/Buddhist
  • Don't claim it's about sex
  • Respect the sacred nature of the traditions
  • Support South Asian teachers and communities

If You're Interested in Sacred Sexuality

If you're actually interested in spirituality and sexuality:

  • Don't call it "Tantra" unless you're practicing authentic Tantra
  • Explore your own cultural traditions around sexuality and spirituality
  • Be honest that you're creating something new, not practicing ancient traditions
  • Don't appropriate South Asian traditions
  • Work with qualified sex educators and therapists, not fake "Tantric" teachers

Red Flags for Fake "Tantra"

Be wary of:

  • Anyone offering "Tantric sex" workshops without Hindu/Buddhist credentials
  • Teachers who focus exclusively on sexuality
  • Expensive retreats promising sexual awakening
  • Anyone who doesn't acknowledge Hindu/Buddhist origins
  • Teachers with no connection to authentic lineages
  • Practices that seem designed for sexual gratification rather than spiritual development
  • Lack of ethical guidelines or boundaries

For South Asian and Buddhist Practitioners

If you're South Asian or Buddhist and interested in authentic Tantra:

  • These are your traditions
  • Seek out qualified teachers within your tradition
  • Understand proper initiation and training are required
  • You don't need permission from Western appropriators
  • Your authentic practice is valid
  • You can call out misappropriation
  • Support authentic teachers and lineages

The Bigger Picture

Orientalism and Sexualization

The Western obsession with "Tantric sex" reflects:

  • Orientalist fantasies about "exotic" Eastern sexuality
  • Sexualization of South Asian cultures
  • Western sexual hang-ups projected onto other cultures
  • Colonial patterns of taking and distorting
  • Disrespect for South Asian spirituality

Part of Larger Appropriation

Tantra misappropriation is part of broader patterns:

  • Yoga reduced to exercise
  • Chakras commodified
  • Hindu and Buddhist practices stripped of context
  • South Asian spirituality treated as commodity
  • All while South Asians face discrimination

Conclusion: Tantra Is Not About Sex

Tantra is a complex set of Hindu and Buddhist esoteric traditions focused on spiritual liberationβ€”NOT "sacred sexuality" or "spiritual sex."

The Western sexualization of Tantra is:

  • Massive cultural appropriation
  • Orientalist and disrespectful
  • Completely misrepresents the traditions
  • Harms South Asian communities
  • Creates environments for exploitation

If you're interested in Tantra:

  • Learn what it actually is (not about sex)
  • Study from authentic Hindu/Buddhist sources
  • Acknowledge South Asian origins always
  • Don't attend "Tantric sex" workshops
  • Don't call sexuality practices "Tantric" unless they're authentic
  • Support authentic teachers and lineages
  • Respect that it's sacred, not sexual entertainment

Stop perpetuating the myth that Tantra is about sex. It's disrespectful, inaccurate, and harmful.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
