Tarot and the Chakras: Reading Your Energy Body
Share
BY NICOLE LAU
The chakra system — the ancient Indian map of seven primary energy centers along the spine — and the tarot are two independent wisdom traditions that, when read together, reveal the same truths about genuine human energy and genuine human experience with extraordinary depth and specificity. In the Constant Unification Theory that underlies the Light Path tradition, this convergence is not coincidence. It is the mathematical inevitability of two independent systems calculating the same invariant constants of genuine human aliveness.
Understanding the connections between tarot and the chakras allows you to read the energy body through the tarot's symbolic lens — to identify which energy centers are most active, most blocked, or most in need of genuine support, and to find the specific tarot wisdom most directly relevant to each center's genuine healing.
The Seven Chakras and Their Tarot Correspondences
Root Chakra (Muladhara) — Earth, Safety, Foundation
Location: Base of spine
Element: Earth
Color: Red
Core quality: Genuine safety, genuine belonging, genuine material foundation
Primary tarot correspondences: The entire Pentacles suit — particularly the Ace of Pentacles (pure material potential), the Four of Pentacles (material security), the Nine of Pentacles (self-sufficient abundance), and the Ten of Pentacles (multigenerational rootedness). The Emperor (genuine structural authority) and The Hierophant (genuine traditional foundation) also carry strong root chakra energy.
When the root chakra needs support: Pentacles cards appearing in challenging positions, The Tower (sudden destabilization), the Five of Pentacles (material hardship), or the Eight of Swords (feeling trapped) may indicate root chakra imbalance.
Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana) — Water, Creativity, Pleasure
Location: Below the navel
Element: Water
Color: Orange
Core quality: Genuine creative flow, genuine sensual pleasure, genuine emotional fluidity
Primary tarot correspondences: The Ace of Cups (pure emotional potential), the Two of Cups (genuine reciprocal connection), the Ace of Wands (creative spark), The Empress (sensual abundance and creative fertility), and The Moon (the deep, fluid unconscious). The entire Cups suit carries strong sacral chakra energy.
When the sacral chakra needs support: Blocked creative energy, emotional numbness, or difficulty with genuine pleasure may appear as reversed Cups cards, the Four of Cups (emotional withdrawal), or the Eight of Cups (abandoning what no longer nourishes).
Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) — Fire, Power, Will
Location: Above the navel
Element: Fire
Color: Yellow
Core quality: Genuine personal power, genuine directed will, genuine self-confidence
Primary tarot correspondences: The entire Wands suit — particularly the Ace of Wands (pure creative fire), the Seven of Wands (genuine courageous defense), and the King of Wands (genuine masterful authority). The Chariot (directed will), Strength (genuine inner power), and The Magician (skilled manifestation) carry strong solar plexus energy.
When the solar plexus needs support: Difficulty with genuine self-assertion, genuine confidence, or genuine directed action may appear as the Five of Wands (scattered energy), the Nine of Wands (exhausted perseverance), or The Devil (power distorted into control).
Heart Chakra (Anahata) — Air, Love, Connection
Location: Center of chest
Element: Air / Water
Color: Green
Core quality: Genuine love, genuine compassion, genuine connection
Primary tarot correspondences: The Lovers (genuine sacred love), The Star (genuine open-hearted hope), the Six of Cups (genuine sweet connection), the Two of Cups (genuine mutual recognition), and The Empress (genuine unconditional nurturing). The heart chakra is the bridge between the lower and upper chakras — and The Lovers, as the sixth Major Arcana card, carries this bridging quality most completely.
When the heart chakra needs support: Difficulty with genuine vulnerability, genuine trust, or genuine compassion may appear as the Three of Swords (heartbreak), the Five of Cups (grief), or the Four of Pentacles (protective holding that prevents genuine connection).
Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) — Sound, Truth, Expression
Location: Throat
Element: Sound / Ether
Color: Blue
Core quality: Genuine authentic expression, genuine honest communication, genuine creative voice
Primary tarot correspondences: The entire Swords suit — particularly the Ace of Swords (pure mental clarity and genuine truth), Justice (genuine honest truth-telling), and the Queen of Swords (genuine clear, compassionate communication). The Hierophant (genuine teaching voice) and The Magician (genuine skilled communication) also carry strong throat chakra energy.
When the throat chakra needs support: Difficulty with genuine authentic expression, genuine honest communication, or genuine creative voice may appear as the Eight of Swords (silenced by self-imposed limitation), the Seven of Swords (communication distorted by strategy), or the Five of Swords (communication as conflict).
Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) — Light, Intuition, Vision
Location: Between the eyebrows
Element: Light
Color: Indigo
Core quality: Genuine intuition, genuine inner vision, genuine spiritual perception
Primary tarot correspondences: The High Priestess (genuine deep intuitive wisdom), The Moon (genuine unconscious vision), The Hermit (genuine inner light that guides), and The Star (genuine clear spiritual perception). Third Eye: Inner Wisdom Access Audio directly activates this chakra's genuine intuitive clarity.
When the third eye needs support: Difficulty with genuine intuitive trust, genuine inner vision, or genuine spiritual perception may appear as The Moon in challenging positions (confusion and illusion), the Seven of Cups (scattered visions without genuine discernment), or the Two of Swords (deliberate blindness).
Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) — Consciousness, Unity, Transcendence
Location: Top of head
Element: Consciousness
Color: Violet / White
Core quality: Genuine spiritual connection, genuine unity consciousness, genuine transcendence
Primary tarot correspondences: The World (genuine cosmic wholeness), The Sun (genuine radiant unity), Judgement (genuine spiritual awakening), The Fool (genuine open connection to the infinite), and The Star (genuine receptive openness to the universe's most generous gifts). The crown chakra is most directly activated by the Major Arcana as a whole — the 22 cards of the Major Arcana are the tarot's own map of the journey from The Fool's open crown to The World's complete integration.
The Chakra Tarot Spread
Draw one card for each of the seven chakras, from root to crown. Read each card as the current state of that chakra's genuine energy — its aliveness, its blocks, its gifts, and its most specific invitation for genuine healing and genuine support. This seven-card spread is one of the most complete and most completely alive energy body readings available.
Water Alchemy: Lunar Waters and Intuition Audio supports the deep, receptive, genuinely embodied quality of consciousness that chakra tarot work most powerfully requires. And the Tarot and Psychology ebook provides the deepest theoretical framework for understanding how the chakra system and the tarot converge on the same invariant truths about genuine human energy and genuine human experience. For deepening this work, the 30-Day Tarot Practice Workbook offers daily structure for integrating these correspondences, while The 52-Week Tarot Journey provides a year of weekly spreads that naturally weave chakra awareness into every reading. The Tarot Journaling Prompts invite reflection on which chakras arise most frequently in your practice, and the Shadow Work Tarot guide illuminates the blocks each center may carry.
