Tarot vs Liu Yao vs Qi Men Dun Jia: When the Philosophy Underneath Changes

Tarot vs Liu Yao vs Qi Men Dun Jia: When the Philosophy Underneath Changes

I assumed, for a long time, that all divination systems were doing the same thing in different languages.

I was partly right. They are all attempting to read pattern — to find, in the arrangement of symbols, a reflection of the situation at hand. They all operate on some version of the principle that the microcosm reflects the macrocosm, that the part contains information about the whole, that a skilled reader can extract meaningful signal from what appears to be random arrangement.

But when I began seriously studying Liu Yao and Qi Men Dun Jia — two of the major Chinese divination systems — I discovered that the philosophical foundations were not identical. The differences were not superficial. They went all the way down, to fundamental assumptions about the nature of time, causality, and what divination is actually doing.

Understanding those differences made me a better reader of all the systems. And it raised questions I am still sitting with.

What Tarot Assumes

Tarot, in its Western esoteric form, operates within a fundamentally spatial and symbolic framework. The cards are images — static pictures that represent archetypal qualities, psychological states, cosmic principles. A reading is an arrangement of these images in space (the spread), and the reader's job is to interpret the relationships between them.

The underlying assumption is that the symbols have inherent meaning — that The Tower means something, that the Five of Cups means something, that these meanings are relatively stable across contexts and can be learned, refined, and applied. The randomness of the shuffle is the mechanism by which the relevant symbols are selected, but the symbols themselves are fixed.

Time, in tarot, is relatively fluid. A reading can address the past, present, or future, and the cards do not inherently distinguish between them. The reader imposes temporal structure through the spread — by designating certain positions as past, present, or future — but the cards themselves are atemporal. They describe qualities and patterns, not moments.

The philosophical framework underlying tarot is essentially Platonic and Hermetic: there is a realm of archetypal forms (the symbolic meanings of the cards) that the material world (the querent's situation) reflects. Reading the symbols gives access to the archetypal level, which illuminates the material level.

What Liu Yao Assumes

Liu Yao — Six Lines divination, derived from the I Ching — operates within a fundamentally different framework. Where tarot is spatial and symbolic, Liu Yao is temporal and dynamic.

A Liu Yao reading is generated by casting coins or yarrow stalks to produce a hexagram — a six-line figure from the I Ching. But unlike a simple I Ching reading, Liu Yao assigns each line a specific elemental identity (based on the Chinese five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, water) and a specific temporal relationship to the reading (based on the day, month, and year of the reading). The lines interact with each other and with the temporal context in ways that are dynamic rather than static.

The key concept in Liu Yao that has no direct equivalent in tarot is wang shuai — the waxing and waning of elemental energy based on the season and time of the reading. A line that represents the wood element is strong in spring and weak in autumn. A line that represents the fire element is strong in summer and weak in winter. The same hexagram read in spring means something different from the same hexagram read in autumn, because the elemental energies are in different states of strength and weakness.

This temporal sensitivity is fundamental to Liu Yao in a way that has no equivalent in tarot. Tarot cards do not change their meaning based on the season. The Tower is The Tower in January and in July. In Liu Yao, the same line can be active or dormant, strong or weak, depending entirely on when the reading is done.

The philosophical framework underlying Liu Yao is Taoist: reality is not a realm of fixed archetypal forms but a continuous flow of energy (qi) through cycles of transformation. The five elements are not static categories but phases in an ongoing cycle of generation and control. Divination is not the reading of fixed symbols but the assessment of where in the cycle the relevant energies currently are.

What Qi Men Dun Jia Assumes

Qi Men Dun Jia — Mysterious Gates Escaping Techniques — is the most complex of the three systems and the one that most clearly reveals the philosophical differences between Eastern and Western divination.

Qi Men operates on a chart that is regenerated every two hours, based on the current date and time. The chart is not static — it changes continuously, reflecting the continuous movement of qi through time and space. A reading done at 10am is based on a different chart than a reading done at noon, even on the same day about the same question.

This is fundamentally different from tarot, where the reading is generated by the querent's shuffle and is not tied to a specific moment in cosmic time. In Qi Men, the moment of the reading is not incidental. It is the reading. The chart is a snapshot of the cosmic configuration at that specific moment, and the querent's situation is read within that configuration.

Qi Men also has a spatial dimension that tarot lacks. The chart is divided into nine palaces arranged in a three-by-three grid, each corresponding to a direction in space. A reading can indicate not just what will happen but where — which direction to move, which location is favorable, which is not. This spatial specificity is characteristic of Chinese geomantic thinking (feng shui operates on similar principles) and has no equivalent in tarot.

The philosophical framework underlying Qi Men is the most explicitly cosmological of the three systems. It assumes that human affairs are embedded in a cosmic order that is continuously moving and that can be read at any moment by someone who knows how to read the chart. The diviner is not interpreting symbols. They are reading the current state of the cosmos and its implications for the specific situation.

What the Differences Reveal

The differences between these three systems are not just technical. They reflect fundamentally different assumptions about the nature of reality and the nature of divination.

Tarot assumes a world of archetypal forms that are stable and can be symbolically represented. The randomness of the shuffle selects the relevant symbols, but the symbols themselves are fixed. This is a Platonic, Hermetic worldview.

Liu Yao assumes a world of dynamic energies in continuous transformation. The relevant question is not what the symbols mean but where the energies currently are in their cycle. This is a Taoist worldview.

Qi Men assumes a world in which human affairs are embedded in a continuously moving cosmic order that can be read at any moment. The diviner reads the cosmos, not symbols. This is a cosmological worldview that has no direct Western equivalent.

These are not three ways of saying the same thing. They are three genuinely different accounts of what divination is and how it works. And the fact that all three produce accurate readings — in the hands of skilled practitioners — raises a question that I find genuinely fascinating: are they accessing the same underlying reality through different frameworks? Or are they accessing different aspects of reality that happen to be relevant to the same human situations?

I don't have a definitive answer. But the question has made me a more careful, more humble, and more curious reader of all three systems.
