Introduction to the Houses
The twelve houses are the framework of the birth chart, representing the twelve major areas of human experience. While the signs describe how planetary energies are expressed and the planets represent what is being expressed, the houses show where in your life these energies manifest. The houses are the stages on which the planetary actors perform their roles.
Understanding the houses is essential for practical astrology—they ground the abstract symbolism of signs and planets in concrete life areas like career, relationships, home, and spirituality. This comprehensive guide explores all twelve houses, their meanings, and how to interpret planets placed within them.
The Structure of the House System

House Systems
There are multiple house systems in astrology. The most common are:
- Placidus: Most popular, unequal houses
- Whole Sign: Each sign = one house, ancient system
- Equal House: All houses 30 degrees from Ascendant
- Koch: Similar to Placidus
Each system has merits; experiment to find what resonates.
Interpreting Planets in Houses
Basic Interpretation
- Identify the planet: What function or energy?
- Identify the house: What life area?
- Combine: How does this planetary energy manifest in this life area?
Example: Venus in 10th house = Love and beauty (Venus) expressed through career and public life (10th house). May indicate career in arts, beauty, or relationships; public image involves charm and aesthetics.
Empty Houses
Empty houses (no planets) are not inactive—they're simply less emphasized. The sign on the cusp and the house's natural ruler still provide information.
