The 7 Chakras & the Major Arcana: A Complete Tarot-Chakra Correspondence Map

The 7 Chakras & the Major Arcana: A Complete Tarot-Chakra Correspondence Map

BY NICOLE LAU

Two Ancient Maps, One Territory

The tarot's Major Arcana — 22 cards depicting the archetypal forces that shape human experience — and the chakra system are two of the most sophisticated maps of consciousness available to the modern practitioner. Developed in different traditions and different centuries, they converge on the same fundamental insight: that human experience is structured by specific archetypal energies, that these energies operate in a coherent system, and that understanding the system is the key to conscious evolution.

The correspondences between the Major Arcana and the chakras are not arbitrary. They are structural mappings — points at which two independent systems of wisdom converge on the same energetic reality. When a specific Major Arcana card appears in a reading, it is not only describing a psychological or situational dynamic; it is pointing to a specific chakra that is active, challenged, or calling for attention.

The Complete Tarot-Chakra Map

Root Chakra — The Emperor (IV) & The World (XXI)

The Emperor governs structure, authority, physical reality, and the establishment of order — the root chakra's domain of safety through structure and the right use of power in the material world. The World represents the completion of the entire Major Arcana journey — the full integration of all chakra energies into a coherent, grounded whole. The World dancer stands within the wreath of completion, fully embodied and fully free — the root chakra's ultimate expression: belonging to existence without reservation.

Sacral Chakra — The Empress (III) & The Moon (XVIII)

The Empress governs creativity, fertility, sensory pleasure, and the abundant flow of life force — the sacral chakra's domain of creative expression and the body's relationship with pleasure and generation. The Moon governs the unconscious, the emotional tides, and the deep waters of feeling that the sacral chakra navigates — the shadow dimension of the creative center, where the most powerful and potentially most transformative energies reside.

Solar Plexus — The Chariot (VII) & Strength (VIII)

The Chariot governs will, direction, and the capacity to move toward one's goals through the disciplined application of personal power — the solar plexus's active dimension. Strength governs the integration of power and compassion — the solar plexus's mature expression, where personal authority is exercised not through force but through the gentle, confident mastery of the inner animal. The figure in Strength does not dominate the lion; she befriends it.

Heart Chakra — The Lovers (VI) & Justice (XI)

The Lovers governs love, relationship, and the sacred union of opposites — the heart chakra's domain of genuine connection and the recognition of the divine in the beloved. Justice governs balance, truth, and the recognition of cause and effect — the heart chakra's discerning dimension: the love that sees clearly, that holds both compassion and accountability, that does not confuse love with the avoidance of truth.

Throat Chakra — The Hierophant (V) & The Magician (I)

The Hierophant governs tradition, teaching, and the transmission of wisdom through established forms — the throat chakra's dimension of speaking within a lineage, of giving voice to what has been received. The Magician governs the capacity to manifest through the directed use of will and communication — the throat chakra's creative dimension: the voice as the instrument through which inner reality becomes outer manifestation. "As above, so below" — the Magician's gesture maps the throat chakra's function as the bridge between inner truth and outer expression.

Third Eye — The High Priestess (II) & The Hermit (IX)

The High Priestess governs intuition, the unconscious, and the direct knowing that bypasses rational analysis — the third eye's primary domain. She sits between the pillars of duality, holding the scroll of hidden knowledge, pointing to the perception that sees beyond appearances. The Hermit governs the inward journey, the search for inner light, and the wisdom that comes from sustained solitary contemplation — the third eye's contemplative dimension: the lantern held aloft to illuminate the path for oneself and others.

Crown Chakra — The Star (XVII), The Moon (XVIII) & The Sun (XIX), Judgement (XX), The Fool (0)

The Star governs hope, spiritual renewal, and the direct connection to the cosmic field — the crown chakra's experience of being held by something larger than the personal self. The Sun governs the full illumination of consciousness, the joy of pure awareness, and the child's innocent recognition of the divine in all things. Judgement governs the soul's awakening to its true nature — the call from above that the crown chakra answers. The Fool — card zero, both beginning and end — governs the pure awareness that precedes all form: the crown chakra's ultimate recognition that consciousness itself is the ground of all experience.

Using the Tarot-Chakra Map in Practice

When a Major Arcana card appears repeatedly in readings, it is pointing to a specific chakra that is active in the practitioner's current experience. The Tower (XVI) — sudden disruption and the collapse of false structures — often signals a root or solar plexus chakra purification. The Death card (XIII) — transformation and the end of one phase — often signals a heart or sacral chakra transition. Wheel of Fortune (X) — cycles, karma, and the turning of fate — often signals Soul Star (8th chakra) activation and karmic completion.

The Akashic Library Opening Audio supports the soul-level integration of tarot and chakra insights — the recognition of the larger pattern that both systems are pointing toward. The Kundalini: Rising Through Chakras Audio supports the progressive activation of the chakras that the tarot map describes. The Chakra Symbol Pillow brings the chakra system's visual language into your tarot practice space.

Key Takeaways

  • The Major Arcana and the chakra system are independent maps converging on the same archetypal energies — different symbolic languages, same invariant constants.
  • Root: Emperor & World. Sacral: Empress & Moon. Solar Plexus: Chariot & Strength. Heart: Lovers & Justice. Throat: Hierophant & Magician. Third Eye: High Priestess & Hermit. Crown: Star, Sun, Judgement & Fool.
  • Recurring Major Arcana cards in readings point to specific chakras that are active or calling for attention.
  • The Fool (0) and The World (XXI) together map the complete chakra journey — from pure awareness (crown) to full embodiment (root) and back.

The tarot reader and the energy healer are looking at the same soul through different lenses. When the High Priestess appears, the third eye is speaking. When the Tower falls, the root or solar plexus is purifying. When the Star shines, the crown is opening. The cards are not predicting the future. They are mapping the energy body — showing which chakra is alive, which is challenged, which is ready to open. Read the cards. Feel the chakras. They are the same conversation. For those working with these convergences, a few companions have become indispensable in my own practice — the Shadow Work Tarot for exploring the deeper layers each card reveals, the 13 New Moon Rituals for aligning the chakra work with lunar cycles, the Sacred Space Cleanse for clearing the field before deep practice, the Void Whisper Audio for the still states where the High Priestess speaks, and the 52-Week Tarot Journey for the sustained unfolding this map invites.

The Way to Deepen Your Practice: 6 Grounded Anchors

When a practice feels restless or distracted, it is rarely a lack of discipline. More often, your nervous system is simply waiting for a physical cue that it is safe to arrive.

Insight remains abstract until it touches your physical world. Reflecting As Above, So Below, a sacred practice begins wherever you set an intentional boundary—draping a woven cloth where noise stops, attuning to an acoustic frequency, or taking up raw materials to forge an implement with your own hands.

You do not need an entire sanctuary built at once. A single deliberate anchor is enough to call you back home to yourself.
