The Chakra Tarot Spread: 7-Card Energy Body Reading
Share
BY NICOLE LAU
The chakra system—the seven primary energy centers of the subtle body, running from the base of the spine to the crown of the head—provides a comprehensive map of human experience: physical, emotional, relational, personal, expressive, intuitive, and spiritual. The chakra tarot spread uses one card for each energy center to reveal the current state of your energy body: where energy is flowing freely, where it is blocked or depleted, and where it is overactive or ungrounded. This reading provides both a diagnostic map of your current energetic state and guidance on how to restore balance and flow.

How to Read Each Position
For each chakra position, ask: Is this card's energy flowing freely (upright, positive cards), blocked or depleted (reversed or challenging cards), or overactive (cards suggesting excess or imbalance)? The card reveals the current state of that energy center and what it needs.
Reading the Chakra Spread as a Whole
- The Heart Chakra (Card 4) is the pivot: The heart chakra is the bridge between the lower three (earth-based) and upper three (spirit-based) chakras. Its state often reveals the overall quality of integration in your energy body.
- Look for clusters: Are multiple consecutive chakras showing challenging cards? This suggests a systemic block in that region of the energy body.
- Notice the contrast between lower and upper chakras: A reading with strong lower chakras and weak upper chakras suggests good grounding but limited spiritual connection; the reverse suggests spiritual development that lacks earthly foundation.
- The most challenging card is the priority: The chakra with the most difficult card is usually the one most in need of attention and healing work.
The Chakra Healing Spread (9 Cards)
An expanded version that adds healing guidance for each blocked chakra:
- Pull the standard 7-card chakra spread
- For any chakra showing a blocked or challenging card, pull an additional card asking: "What does this chakra need to heal and open?"
This expanded spread provides both the diagnostic map and the healing guidance in a single reading.
Chakra Healing with Tarot
For practitioners who want to work with the chakra system through structured spread work, 50 Tarot Spreads: A Visual Guide includes the chakra spread alongside other energy body and healing layouts—providing a comprehensive library of spreads for practitioners working at the intersection of tarot and energy healing.

Recording your chakra readings in a dedicated journal—noting the cards for each energy center, your interpretations, and how your energy body evolves over time—creates a valuable record of your healing journey. The High Priestess Tarot Journal provides a dedicated space for this kind of sustained energy body documentation. For those who find themselves returning again and again to the interplay between the crown chakra's spiritual opening and the root chakra's grounding, the The 52-Week Tarot Journey offers a full year of weekly spreads and daily pulls that mirror the chakra rise, and pairing it with a Healing Sigil Journal can deepen the documentation of each energy center's shifts. The Tarot Journaling Prompts also offer reflective questions tailored to each chakra's themes, while the Cosmic Alignment Ritual Kit provides a tangible way to align the upper chakras with celestial cycles, and the Void Whisper Audio creates a sonic space for the third eye to receive the insights the chakra spread has revealed.
