The Chariot Tarot Card: Complete Guide to Meaning & Symbolism
Share
BY NICOLE LAU
The Chariot charges forward, pulled by opposing forces held in perfect balance through sheer willpower. The charioteer stands victorious, armored and crowned, moving toward triumph through determination and control. This is The Chariot: the card of willpower, victory, and the focused energy that overcomes all obstacles. It represents the moment when you harness your power, direct your energy, and move forward with unstoppable momentum.
Core Symbolism of The Chariot
Every element in The Chariot card carries profound meaning. It is numbered 7—the number of victory, spiritual completion, and the mastery that comes from focused will. Where The Lovers (6) teach choice, The Chariot (7) teaches action and the determination to move forward.
The Charioteer
The figure stands upright in the chariot, armored and crowned with a star. This is the victorious warrior, the one who has mastered themselves and now moves forward with confidence and control.
The Two Sphinxes
Two sphinxes—one black, one white—pull the chariot in opposite directions. They represent opposing forces: light and dark, conscious and unconscious, positive and negative. The charioteer controls them through willpower alone, no reins needed.
The Armor
The charioteer wears armor decorated with crescents and symbols, representing emotional protection and the strength needed to move forward despite vulnerability.
The Canopy of Stars
Above the charioteer is a canopy decorated with stars, representing divine protection and the cosmic support for this victorious journey.
The City Behind
Behind The Chariot stands a city—what has been left behind, what has been conquered, the foundation from which this journey begins.
Numerology: The Power of Seven
The Chariot is numbered 7—the number of victory, spiritual completion, and mastery.
In numerology, 7 represents:
- Victory and triumph
- Spiritual completion
- Mastery and control
- The chariot of the soul
- Focused willpower
- The seven chakras aligned
Where 6 (The Lovers) introduces choice and integration, 7 (The Chariot) introduces action and the willpower to move forward. This is the number of victory through determination.
Cancer Association: Emotional Strength
The Chariot is ruled by Cancer, the cardinal water sign of emotional strength and protective determination. This connection infuses The Chariot with Cancer qualities:
- Emotional strength and resilience
- Protective armor around vulnerability
- Determination to protect what matters
- Moving forward despite fear
- Harnessing emotional energy for action
- The hard shell protecting soft interior
The Chariot doesn't deny emotions—it harnesses them. Like Cancer's protective shell, The Chariot's armor allows forward movement while protecting what's vulnerable within.
Upright Meaning: Victory & Willpower
When The Chariot appears upright in a reading, it announces: "Move forward with determination. Harness your willpower. Victory is yours through focused action."
Key upright meanings:
- Willpower: Focused determination and self-discipline
- Victory: Triumph through effort and control
- Forward movement: Progress, advancement, momentum
- Control: Mastering opposing forces through will
- Determination: Unwavering focus on goals
- Overcoming obstacles: Breaking through barriers
- Success: Achievement through directed energy
The Chariot doesn't wait for victory—it creates it. Through willpower, determination, and focused action, The Chariot moves forward and conquers.
Reversed Meaning: Loss of Control & Scattered Energy
Reversed, The Chariot's focused willpower becomes scattered energy, its victory becomes defeat, and its control becomes chaos.
Key reversed meanings:
- Lack of direction: No clear goal or path
- Scattered energy: Pulled in too many directions
- Loss of control: Unable to harness opposing forces
- Aggression: Willpower becoming force or violence
- Defeat: Losing battles, failing to overcome
- Stagnation: Unable to move forward
- Self-sabotage: Working against yourself
The reversed Chariot asks: Have you lost direction? Are you scattered? Are you trying to control through force rather than will?
The Chariot's Journey: From Choice to Action
In the Fool's Journey through the Major Arcana, The Chariot is the seventh teacher. Where The Magician taught action, The High Priestess taught intuition, The Empress taught creation, The Emperor taught structure, The Hierophant taught tradition, and The Lovers taught choice, The Chariot teaches willpower and the determination to move forward.
The Chariot teaches The Fool:
- You must move forward with determination
- Victory comes through focused willpower
- Opposing forces can be harnessed through control
- Obstacles are meant to be overcome
- Success requires directed energy and discipline
- You are the master of your journey
This is the transition from choosing (Lovers) to acting (Chariot). The Fool learns that choice must be followed by determined action.
The Chariot in Your Reading
When The Chariot appears in your reading, pay attention to its position:
In the past: You've recently experienced victory or moved forward with determination
In the present: It's time to harness your willpower and move forward with focus
In the future: Victory is approaching through determined effort
As advice: Focus your energy, control opposing forces, move forward with determination
As an obstacle: Scattered energy, lack of direction, or aggression is creating difficulty
The Chariot asks you to examine your willpower and direction. Are you moving forward? Are you in control? Are you harnessing your energy?

The Chariot's Shadow
Every archetype has a shadow, and The Chariot's includes:
The Aggressor: Using force instead of will, controlling through violence or domination.
The Scattered: Pulled in too many directions, unable to focus, no clear path.
The Defeated: Giving up, losing control, unable to overcome obstacles.
The Rigid: So controlled that there's no flexibility, no adaptation, no flow.
Working with The Chariot means confronting these shadows. Are you using will or force? Are you focused or scattered? Are you controlled or rigid?
The Chariot's Message
The Chariot's core message is this: You have the power to move forward. Through willpower, determination, and focused action, you can overcome any obstacle and claim victory.
The obstacles in your path aren't there to stop you—they're there to be overcome. The opposing forces pulling at you aren't there to tear you apart—they're there to be harnessed. The journey ahead isn't impossible—it's waiting for your determination.
The Chariot stands victorious, armored and crowned, controlling opposing forces through sheer will. No reins. No force. Just focused determination and the unwavering belief in victory.
You are The Chariot when you move forward with determination. You are the victory when you overcome obstacles. You are the willpower when you harness opposing forces.
The only question is: are you ready to charge forward?
The Chariot is the card of directed will — not the raw willpower of The Magician but the disciplined, focused momentum of someone who has learned to harness opposing forces and move forward with them rather than against them, and when it appears in a reading it almost always signals that victory is available but only through sustained, intentional effort.
