The Devil in Love: The Chains You Chose and Can Choose to Release

This is Part 16 of a 22-part series: The Major Arcana as a Love Story — tracing the complete journey of love through all 22 cards of the Major Arcana.
Card 15: The Chains You Put On Yourself
Temperance found the flow. The angel poured steadily, the irises bloomed, the golden path stretched toward the horizon.
And then something happened. Something that Temperance's careful balance could not prevent, because it does not come from outside. It comes from within.
This is The Devil.
Card 15 of the Major Arcana is one of the most misunderstood cards in the deck — and in love, it is one of the most important. The image shows two figures bound by chains. But look closely at those chains: they are loose. The loops around the figures' necks are large enough to slip over their heads at any moment. They are not locked. They are not inescapable.
They are chosen.
The Devil in love is not about evil or malice or forces beyond your control. It is about the patterns, the obsessions, the dynamics that you return to again and again — not because you have to, but because something in you has not yet been willing to stop.
What the Devil Feels Like in Love
The Devil in love is the feeling of being stuck in a pattern you can see but cannot seem to stop. The relationship you know is not good for you but cannot leave. The dynamic you recognize as unhealthy but keep recreating. The person you know is wrong for you but cannot stop thinking about.
It is the feeling of obsession — when a person or a relationship takes up so much space in your mind that there is little room for anything else. When you check their social media compulsively. When you replay conversations looking for hidden meanings. When the relationship has ended but you cannot stop returning to it in your thoughts.
It is the feeling of a relationship that operates through intensity rather than intimacy. Where the highs are very high and the lows are very low, and the drama of the cycle has become its own kind of addiction. Where you mistake the intensity of the feeling for the depth of the connection.
And it is the feeling, sometimes, of recognizing your own shadow in a relationship — of seeing, in the dynamic between you and your partner, the reflection of something in yourself that you have not yet been willing to look at directly.
The Devil's Patterns: What Keeps Us Bound
The Anxious-Avoidant Dance
One of the most common Devil patterns in love is the anxious-avoidant attachment dynamic: one person pursues, the other withdraws; the withdrawal intensifies the pursuit, the pursuit intensifies the withdrawal. Both people are trapped in a loop that neither can break alone. The anxious partner is bound by their fear of abandonment; the avoidant partner is bound by their fear of engulfment. The chains are different, but both are chosen — chosen in the sense that they reflect unhealed wounds that both people have not yet addressed.
The Intensity Addiction
Some people are addicted to the feeling of intense, dramatic love — the kind that involves constant uncertainty, passionate reconciliations after painful conflicts, the electric charge of never quite knowing where you stand. This intensity is often mistaken for passion. But genuine passion does not require suffering. The Devil's intensity is the counterfeit of depth — it feels profound because it is painful, but pain is not the same as meaning.
The Familiar Wound
Perhaps the most subtle Devil pattern is the compulsion to recreate familiar wounds. To choose, again and again, partners who replicate the emotional dynamics of early relationships — not because these dynamics are good, but because they are known. The Devil's chains are often made of familiarity: we return to what we know, even when what we know hurts us, because the unknown feels more frightening than the familiar pain.
The Loose Chains: The Devil's Most Important Secret
The chains in the Devil card are loose. This is the card's most important and most hopeful detail.
You are not trapped. You are not a victim of forces beyond your control. You are a person who has been making choices — choices that have kept you in a pattern that does not serve you. And because they are choices, they can be changed.
This is not a judgment. The choices that created the pattern were made for reasons — usually very good reasons, rooted in early experiences of love and safety and what it means to be close to another person. The Devil does not blame you for the chains. The Devil simply shows you that they are there, and that they are loose, and asks: now that you can see them, what will you do?
The answer is not always to leave. Sometimes the Devil's work in a relationship is to bring the shadow into the light — to name the pattern, to understand it, to do the work of healing the wound that created it. Sometimes the relationship can survive this work and emerge transformed. Sometimes it cannot. But the work must be done either way.
The Devil and Shadow Work in Love
The Devil is the shadow card of the Major Arcana — the card that asks you to look at what you have been refusing to see. In love, this shadow work is some of the most important work available.
Your shadow in love is the part of you that you have not integrated — the needs you are ashamed of, the fears you have not acknowledged, the wounds you have not healed. These shadow elements do not disappear because you ignore them. They go underground and shape your choices from below the surface, creating the patterns that the Devil card reveals.
Shadow work in love means asking: what am I getting from this pattern, even though it hurts me? What need is being met — however inadequately — by this dynamic? What would I have to face about myself if I released it?
These are not comfortable questions. But they are the questions that lead to genuine freedom.
The Devil's Shadow in Love
The Devil's shadow is using shadow work as a reason to stay in genuinely harmful situations. There is a difference between the Devil's invitation to examine your patterns and the rationalization of staying in a relationship that is causing real damage. Not every difficult relationship is a growth opportunity. Some relationships are simply harmful, and the most important shadow work is recognizing that and leaving.
The test: is this relationship bringing your shadow into the light so it can be healed, or is it feeding your shadow and keeping it in the dark? The first is the Devil's gift. The second is the Devil's trap.
When the Devil Appears in a Love Reading
- A pattern is operating that is keeping you bound — examine it honestly
- Look for the loose chains: where do you have more choice than you think?
- Shadow work is needed — what are you refusing to see about yourself or the relationship?
- An obsession or addiction to a person or dynamic is indicated — what need is it meeting?
- The intensity you are feeling may be mistaken for depth — examine the difference
- Freedom is available, but it requires honesty about what has been chosen
The Devil's Question for You
What are you getting from this pattern that you haven't been willing to admit?
This is the Devil's question, and it is the most uncomfortable question in the entire Major Arcana. Because the answer is always something real. The pattern exists because it is meeting a need — however inadequately, however painfully. And until you can see what that need is, you cannot find a healthier way to meet it.
Look at the chains. They are loose. They have always been loose.
What would you have to give up — what familiar pain, what known intensity, what comfortable wound — to slip them off?
