The First and Third Pentacles of Saturn are both instruments of the practitioner's engagement with Saturn's spiritual hierarchy — both oriented toward the practitioner's relationship with Saturnine spirits, both essential to the practitioner who works seriously with Saturnine evocation. But they serve fundamentally different functions within that engagement: the First Pentacle establishes the authority through which the practitioner commands Saturn's spirits, while the Third Pentacle opens the channel through which those spirits are summoned. Understanding the distinction between authority (First Pentacle) and summoning (Third Pentacle) reveals why both are necessary and how they work together in nocturnal Saturnine evocation.
The First Pentacle: Authority Over Saturn's Spirits
The First Pentacle establishes the practitioner's authority — their recognized right to command Saturn's spirits, their standing within the Saturnine hierarchy, and the iron authority through which their commands are enforced. Without this established authority, the practitioner's summoning lacks the recognized standing that makes it effective: the spirits may be called, but they are not compelled to respond.
The First Pentacle provides:

- Protection through the collapse of hostile wills during evocation
The Third Pentacle: The Channel of Summoning
The Third Pentacle opens the channel through which Saturn's spirits are called forth — the active instrument of summoning that brings the Saturnine intelligences into contact with the practitioner during the nocturnal working. Without this channel, the practitioner's authority has no means of reaching the Saturnine hierarchy; the authority is established but the connection is not made.
