Share
BY NICOLE LAU
There is one mantra that stands above all others in the Vedic tradition—the most sacred, the most powerful, the most revered.
It is called the Gayatri Mantra.
For thousands of years, this ancient invocation to the divine light has been chanted at sunrise by yogis, sages, and seekers. It is considered the mother of all mantras, the essence of the Vedas, the supreme prayer.
The Gayatri Mantra is:
- An invocation to the Sun (Savitar/Surya) as the source of all light and life
- A prayer for illumination of the intellect and consciousness
- A meditation on the divine light that pervades all existence
- A tool for spiritual awakening and enlightenment
When you chant the Gayatri, you're not just reciting words. You're invoking the light of consciousness, asking the divine to illuminate your mind, remove the darkness of ignorance, and guide you toward truth.
This is the Gayatri Mantra—the solar invocation for illumination, the prayer for wisdom, the path to enlightenment.

The Three Levels of Meaning
Like all sacred mantras, the Gayatri operates on multiple levels:
1. The Gross Level (Physical)
The mantra invokes Surya, the physical Sun—the source of all light, warmth, and life on Earth.
We meditate on the Sun's light and ask it to illuminate our minds.
2. The Subtle Level (Energetic/Mental)
The mantra invokes the inner light—the light of consciousness, the light of the soul (atman).
We meditate on the divine light within and ask it to illuminate our intellect, removing ignorance.
3. The Supreme Level (Spiritual)
The mantra invokes Brahman—the ultimate reality, the supreme light of pure consciousness.
We meditate on the divine light that is the source of all existence and ask it to awaken us to our true nature.
The Structure: 24 Syllables
The Gayatri Mantra has 24 syllables (excluding Om and the Vyahritis—Bhur Bhuvah Svah).
These 24 syllables represent:
- The 24 hours of the day
- The 24 vertebrae of the spine (kundalini path)
- The 24 principles of creation in Samkhya philosophy
Each syllable is a ray of divine light, illuminating a different aspect of consciousness.
The Deity: Savitar/Gayatri
Savitar (The Sun God)
Savitar is the solar deity invoked in the Gayatri Mantra. He is:
- The divine light that illuminates all
- The source of life and consciousness
- The remover of darkness and ignorance
- The bestower of wisdom and enlightenment
Gayatri (The Goddess)
Gayatri is also personified as a goddess—the mother of the Vedas, the embodiment of divine wisdom.
She is depicted with five faces (representing the five elements) and seated on a lotus, holding sacred objects.

The Traditional Ritual: Surya Arghya
Traditionally, the Gayatri is chanted while offering water to the Sun (Surya Arghya).
How to Perform Surya Arghya:
- Stand facing the rising sun
- Hold water in your cupped hands (or a copper vessel)
- Chant the Gayatri Mantra
- As you chant, slowly pour the water toward the sun (or onto the ground)
- Visualize the water as an offering of gratitude
- Repeat 3 or more times
This ritual:
- Honors the Sun as the source of life
- Expresses gratitude
- Connects you to the solar energy
- Purifies your energy
Visualization While Chanting
To deepen your practice, visualize while chanting:
Visualization 1: The Rising Sun
Visualize the rising sun in front of you, radiating golden light. As you chant, see this light entering your third eye and crown chakra, illuminating your entire being.
Visualization 2: The Inner Light
Visualize a brilliant light in your heart or third eye. As you chant, see this light expanding, filling your entire body, then radiating outward to the universe.
Visualization 3: The Three Worlds
As you chant "Bhur Bhuvah Svah," visualize the three worlds—earth, atmosphere, heaven—all pervaded by divine light.
Who Can Chant the Gayatri?
Traditionally, the Gayatri was reserved for initiated Brahmins (the priestly class) and was given during the sacred thread ceremony (Upanayana).
However, many modern teachers believe the Gayatri is universal and can be chanted by anyone who approaches it with reverence and sincerity.
The mantra itself is a prayer for illumination—why would the divine light be restricted to only some seekers?
If you feel called to chant the Gayatri, approach it with:
- Reverence and respect
- Purity of intention
- Sincerity and devotion
- Regular, consistent practice
