The Hermaphrodite—the divine androgynous being containing both masculine and feminine in perfect balance—is one of the most profound symbols in alchemy. Representing the result of the Sacred Marriage, the integration of all opposites, and the Philosopher's Stone personified, the Hermaphrodite embodies the truth that wholeness requires both poles, that perfection is not one-sided, and that the goal of the Great Work is complete integration.

What is the Hermaphrodite?

Physical Description:

• A single being with both male and female characteristics
• Often depicted as half male, half female (split down the middle)
• Or: fully both, transcending both
• Sometimes winged (showing transcendence)
• Often crowned (showing sovereignty)
• Holding symbols of both genders

The Name:

• Hermaphrodite = Hermes + Aphrodite
• Greek god + Greek goddess
• Masculine + Feminine
• The union of opposites in one being
