The Hermaphrodite: Perfect Balance
Share
BY NICOLE LAU
The Hermaphrodite—the divine androgynous being containing both masculine and feminine in perfect balance—is one of the most profound symbols in alchemy. Representing the result of the Sacred Marriage, the integration of all opposites, and the Philosopher's Stone personified, the Hermaphrodite embodies the truth that wholeness requires both poles, that perfection is not one-sided, and that the goal of the Great Work is complete integration.
This is the symbol of perfect balance.
What is the Hermaphrodite?
The Image
Physical Description:
- A single being with both male and female characteristics
- Often depicted as half male, half female (split down the middle)

Conclusion: Becoming Whole
The Hermaphrodite teaches that wholeness is not about choosing one pole over another, but about integrating both. You are not meant to be only masculine or only feminine, only active or only receptive, only logical or only intuitive. You are meant to be both, in perfect balance, dancing together within one being.
The Great Work is becoming the Hermaphrodite—integrating all opposites, balancing all polarities, uniting all dualities. When the Red King and White Queen within you recognize each other, honor each other, and unite in perfect love, you become the Rebis, the divine androgyne, the Philosopher's Stone.
You are not half a person seeking your other half. You are a whole being containing both halves. The masculine and feminine within you are waiting to unite. Let them marry. Become the Hermaphrodite. Embody perfect balance.
This is wholeness. This is the Stone. This is you, complete.
