The Hermit in Love: The Journey You Must Take Alone

The Hermit in Love: The Journey You Must Take Alone

This is Part 10 of a 22-part series: The Major Arcana as a Love Story — tracing the complete journey of love through all 22 cards of the Major Arcana.

Card 9: The Light You Carry Alone

You have leapt. You have pursued. You have sensed and bloomed and built and chosen and fought and held. You have loved with everything you have.

And now the path leads somewhere unexpected.

Inward.

This is The Hermit — and the Hermit does not arrive to end the love story. The Hermit arrives to deepen it. Because the Hermit knows something that the earlier cards, in their beautiful momentum, have not yet had time to say:

You cannot truly love another person until you know yourself.

Card 9 of the Major Arcana shows a solitary figure standing on a mountain peak in the darkness, holding a lantern that casts a small circle of warm golden light. They are alone. The valley is far below. The stars are above. And the lantern — the lantern is not searching for something outside. It is illuminating the path directly in front of them, one step at a time.

The Hermit is not lost. The Hermit is exactly where they need to be.

What the Hermit Feels Like in Love

The Hermit in love is the feeling of needing to step back — not away from the relationship, but into yourself. The feeling that something important is waiting for you in the quiet, and that you cannot hear it while you are fully immersed in the noise of togetherness.

It is the feeling of a relationship that has reached a point where both people need to do some individual work. Where the growth that is being called for is not growth together, but growth separately — each person going deeper into their own truth, so that when they return to each other, they bring more of themselves.

It is also the feeling of a period of genuine solitude — between relationships, or within a relationship that has created space for individual reflection. The Hermit's solitude is not loneliness. It is chosen aloneness — the deliberate decision to be with yourself, to listen to yourself, to find out what you actually think and feel and want when no one else's needs or expectations are shaping the answer.

And it is the feeling of the lantern — the inner light that you carry. The wisdom that is yours alone, that no relationship can give you and no relationship can take away. The Hermit's lantern is the light of self-knowledge, and it is the most important thing you bring to any relationship.

Why the Hermit Appears in a Love Story

It might seem strange that a card of solitude appears in the middle of a love story. But the Hermit's placement here — after the intensity of the Chariot and the deep acceptance of Strength, before the turning point of the Wheel of Fortune — is not an accident.

The love story of the Major Arcana has been moving fast. The Fool leapt. The Magician pursued. The High Priestess sensed. The Empress bloomed. The Emperor built. The Hierophant declared. The Lovers chose. The Chariot fought. Strength held.

And now the Hermit asks: in all of this, have you checked in with yourself?

Do you know what you actually want from this relationship, separate from what you think you should want? Do you know which of your needs are being met and which are not? Do you know where you end and your partner begins — where your identity is your own and where it has become entangled with theirs?

The Hermit's solitude is not a retreat from love. It is a return to the self that makes love possible.

The Hermit's Lantern: What It Illuminates

The Hermit's lantern illuminates three things that are essential to healthy love:

Your Own Needs

When you are deeply immersed in a relationship, it is easy to lose track of your own needs — to become so focused on the other person's needs, or on the relationship's needs, that your own quietly go unmet. The Hermit's lantern turns inward and asks: what do I actually need? Not what do I think I should need, not what would be convenient to need, but what do I genuinely, honestly need from love?

Your Own Values

Relationships have a way of gradually shifting our values — sometimes toward greater wisdom, sometimes toward accommodation that has gone too far. The Hermit's lantern asks: what do I actually believe? What matters to me, independent of what matters to my partner? Where have I compromised in ways that serve the relationship, and where have I compromised in ways that have cost me something essential?

Your Own Light

The Hermit carries their own lantern. They do not borrow light from anyone else. In love, this translates to the question of whether you have maintained your own sources of meaning, joy, and identity — or whether you have gradually outsourced your inner life to the relationship. The Hermit reminds you: you must be your own light source. A relationship can amplify your light, but it cannot be its origin.

The Hermit and Healthy Solitude in Relationships

One of the most important and least discussed aspects of healthy relationships is the need for solitude within togetherness. The capacity to be alone — genuinely, comfortably, productively alone — even within a committed relationship.

This is not distance. It is not withdrawal. It is the recognition that two whole people make a better relationship than two people who have merged into one. That the time you spend with yourself — in reflection, in creative work, in the quiet of your own company — is not time taken away from the relationship. It is time invested in the person who shows up to the relationship.

The Hermit in a healthy relationship looks like: the morning walk you take alone. The creative practice that is yours. The friendships that exist outside the couple. The inner life that you tend privately, that makes you more interesting and more whole when you return to your partner.

The Hermit in an unhealthy relationship looks like: using solitude as avoidance, as punishment, as a way of not having to be vulnerable. The difference is in the quality of the aloneness — whether it is generative or defensive.

The Hermit's Shadow in Love

The Hermit's shadow is isolation masquerading as wisdom. The shadow Hermit uses the language of self-knowledge and inner work to avoid the vulnerability of genuine intimacy. Stays on the mountain because the valley — with its messiness and its demands and its requirement to be truly known by another person — feels too dangerous.

There is a difference between the Hermit who goes inward in order to return more fully, and the Hermit who goes inward and never comes back. The first is wisdom. The second is fear wearing the costume of wisdom.

The test: is this solitude making you more capable of love, or less? Is the inner work you are doing opening you toward greater intimacy, or is it becoming a sophisticated reason to keep people at a distance?

When the Hermit Appears in a Love Reading

  • A period of solitude and inner reflection is needed — honor it rather than rushing past it
  • Check in with your own needs, values, and identity within the relationship
  • The most important work right now is individual, not relational
  • You may be being called to mentor or guide someone in matters of love — share your wisdom
  • A relationship may need more space for individual growth and solitude
  • Ask: do I know myself well enough to truly love another?

The Hermit's Question for You

Do you know yourself well enough to truly love another?

This is the Hermit's question, and it is not rhetorical. It is an invitation to genuine inquiry. To sit with the lantern in the darkness of the mountain and ask: who am I, really, beneath all the roles I play in this relationship? What do I want, really, when I am honest with myself? What am I afraid of, really, that I have been avoiding by staying busy with love?

The Hermit's lantern is small. It illuminates only a few steps ahead. But those few steps are enough — because the Hermit knows that you don't need to see the whole path. You only need to see where to put your foot next.

The mountain is quiet. The stars are above. The lantern is in your hand.

What does it illuminate?
