The Seasonal Joy Spread: Celebrating the Wheel of the Year
Share
BY NICOLE LAU
In the Light Path tradition, joy is not a single, uniform quality. It is seasonal — alive in different ways at different moments in the great wheel of the year, expressing itself through the particular, irreplaceable gifts of each season's unique energy. Spring joy is not the same as winter joy. Harvest celebration is not the same as solstice stillness. Each turning of the wheel offers a completely specific, completely irreplaceable quality of genuine aliveness that is available only in that season and only in that moment.
The Seasonal Joy Spread is designed to help you align with the wheel's current turning — to find the particular joy that this specific season is offering, to honor what is completing and what is beginning, and to celebrate the cycle itself as one of the most profound and most completely available expressions of genuine, living abundance.
The Spread Layout
Arrange nine cards: one center card and eight arranged in a wheel around it, two cards per season:
Card 1 — The Wheel (Center): The overarching theme of your current seasonal cycle — what the wheel itself is teaching you right now, what the larger pattern of your life's seasons is revealing.
Cards 2 – 3 — Spring (East): Card 2: What is newly seeding and beginning in your life right now — the fresh green shoots of genuine new possibility. Card 3: What spring joy — the particular delight of new beginnings, fresh starts, and the first thrilling emergence of what has been dormant — is most available to you right now.
Cards 4 – 5 — Summer (South): Card 4: What is in full bloom and full expression in your life right now — the peak aliveness, the full flowering of what has been growing. Card 5: What summer joy — the particular delight of full expression, peak vitality, and the complete, unself-conscious aliveness of high summer — is most available to you right now.
Cards 6 – 7 — Autumn (West): Card 6: What is ready for harvest in your life right now — what has ripened, what is ready to be gathered, what genuine abundance is available to be received. Card 7: What autumn joy — the particular delight of harvest, completion, and the warm, golden satisfaction of gathering what has been genuinely grown — is most available to you right now.
Cards 8 – 9 — Winter (North): Card 8: What is completing, releasing, and returning to the dark in your life right now — what needs to be let go, composted, or allowed to rest in the fertile darkness before the next spring. Card 9: What winter joy — the particular delight of stillness, depth, inner richness, and the quiet, sustaining warmth of genuine rest — is most available to you right now.
How to Use This Spread
This spread is most powerfully used at the eight seasonal turning points of the Wheel of the Year: the solstices (Yule and Litha), the equinoxes (Ostara and Mabon), and the cross-quarter days (Imbolc, Beltane, Lughnasadh, and Samhain). It can also be used at any moment when you want to align more deeply with the season you are currently in.
Before laying the cards, go outside if possible — or open a window and feel the season's air on your skin. Let the physical reality of the current season be as present as possible before you begin the reading. The more genuinely you are in the season, the more clearly the spread will reveal its specific gifts.
Shuffle while holding the question: what is this season offering me, and how can I receive it most completely?
