The Slavic Cosmos: Three Worlds, the World Tree, and the War Between Gods

The Slavic Cosmos: Three Worlds, the World Tree, and the War Between Gods

The Slavic universe is not flat. It has depth — three layers, connected by a single axis, each with its own quality of reality and its own inhabitants.

Understanding this cosmology is not an academic exercise. It is the foundation of everything in Slavic witchcraft: why certain practices are done at certain times, why certain spirits inhabit certain places, why the relationship between the living and the dead is structured the way it is. The three worlds are not mythology. They are the map of the territory that Slavic practice navigates.

The Three Worlds

Yav — the world of the living, the manifest world, the world of ordinary experience. This is the middle world, the world we inhabit in our waking lives. It is the world of the body, of time, of cause and effect, of the relationships between living human beings and the natural world around them. Yav is not the only real world — it is one layer of a three-layered reality — but it is the world from which all practice begins.

Prav — the world of divine order, of cosmic law, of the gods and the principles that govern the structure of reality. Prav is above Yav — not spatially, but in the sense of being more fundamental, more ordered, closer to the source. It is the world of Perun, the thunder god, the upholder of cosmic order. To act in accordance with Prav is to act in alignment with the deep structure of reality — to live rightly, to maintain the relationships and obligations that hold the world together.

Nav — the world of the dead, of the ancestors, of the forces that exist beneath and before the manifest world. Nav is below Yav — the underworld, the realm of Veles, the god of the dead, of magic, of cattle, of wealth, of the wisdom that comes from the other side of death. Nav is not evil. It is the necessary counterpart to Prav — the dark that balances the light, the hidden that underlies the manifest, the past that makes the present possible.

These three worlds are not separate. They interpenetrate. The living world of Yav is constantly in contact with both Prav and Nav — with the divine order above and the ancestral world below. The practice of Slavic witchcraft is, in large part, the practice of navigating these contacts: maintaining right relationship with the gods of Prav, honoring the ancestors of Nav, and living well in the manifest world of Yav.

The World Tree

The axis that connects the three worlds is the World Tree — in Slavic tradition, most often an oak, though sometimes a birch or an ash. The World Tree is the cosmic axis, the center of the universe, the point at which all three worlds meet.

Its roots reach down into Nav, the world of the dead and the ancestors. Its trunk stands in Yav, the world of the living. Its branches reach up into Prav, the world of the gods and cosmic order.

The World Tree is not just a cosmological symbol. It is a practical one. It is the axis along which communication between the worlds travels — the path by which the shaman or the witch moves between the worlds, by which the prayers of the living reach the gods, by which the wisdom of the ancestors returns to the living. Every sacred oak in a Slavic village was understood as a local manifestation of the World Tree — a point of contact between the worlds, a place where the boundaries between Yav, Prav, and Nav were thinner than elsewhere.

The birds that live in the World Tree are messengers between the worlds. The serpent that coils around its roots is Veles himself, or his representative — the chthonic force that connects the living world to the world of the dead. The eagle that sits in its highest branches is the representative of Perun, the sky god, the upholder of order.

Perun and Veles: The Cosmic Conflict

The central myth of Slavic cosmology is the conflict between Perun and Veles — a conflict that is not a battle between good and evil, but a dynamic tension between two necessary principles that together constitute the structure of reality.

Perun is the god of thunder, lightning, and the sky. He is the upholder of cosmic order, the protector of the living world, the god of warriors and rulers. He dwells in the highest branches of the World Tree, in the realm of Prav. He is associated with the oak, with fire, with the eagle, with the color gold. His weapon is the thunderbolt, which he hurls at his eternal adversary.

Veles is the god of the underworld, of cattle and wealth, of magic and wisdom, of the dead. He dwells in the roots of the World Tree, in the realm of Nav. He is associated with the serpent, with water, with the bear, with the color black and silver. He is the master of the other world — the keeper of the dead, the source of magical knowledge, the god of those who work with hidden forces.

The myth tells of Veles stealing something from Perun — his cattle, his wife, his son, depending on the version — and retreating to the underworld. Perun pursues him, hurling thunderbolts. Veles transforms — into a serpent, a man, a tree, a stone — to escape. Eventually Perun strikes him, and the stolen thing is returned. Rain falls. The world is renewed.

This myth is not just a story about weather, though it explains the phenomenon of thunderstorms. It is a description of the fundamental structure of reality: the tension between the ordering principle (Perun) and the transformative, chthonic principle (Veles), between the sky and the earth, between the living and the dead, between order and magic.

Neither principle is good or evil. Both are necessary. The world requires both Perun's order and Veles's magic, both the sky and the underworld, both the living and the dead. The conflict between them is not a war to be won but a dynamic tension to be maintained — the engine of the world's renewal.

What This Means for Practice

The three-world cosmology and the Perun-Veles dynamic are not abstract theology. They shape every aspect of Slavic practice.

The orientation of sacred space reflects the three worlds: the hearth fire reaches upward toward Prav, the threshold connects to the spirits of Nav, the living space of Yav is held between them. Rituals for protection and order invoke Perun. Rituals for magic, for communication with the dead, for hidden knowledge invoke Veles.

The timing of practice follows the movement between the worlds: the liminal times — dawn and dusk, the solstices and equinoxes, the festivals of the dead — are the times when the boundaries between the worlds are thinnest, when communication between Yav, Prav, and Nav is most possible.

The role of the practitioner is to be a navigator of these boundaries — to know which world is being addressed, which forces are being invoked, and how to maintain the relationships that keep all three worlds in right relationship with each other.

This is the cosmological foundation of Slavic witchcraft. Everything else is built on it.
