The Sun in Love: When Love Has Nothing Left to Hide
Share
This is Part 20 of a 22-part series: The Major Arcana as a Love Story — tracing the complete journey of love through all 22 cards of the Major Arcana.
Card 19: Love in Full Light
The Moon's fog has lifted. The path between the towers has been walked. The fears have been faced, the projections examined, the unconscious material brought into the light.
And now — the Sun.
Not the reflected light of the Moon. Not the small, personal light of the Hermit's lantern. Not the distant hope of the Star. The Sun — blazing, generous, unconditional, illuminating everything without exception, casting no shadows that it does not also illuminate.
This is The Sun — Card 19, the most joyful card in the entire Major Arcana, and the one that arrives at exactly the right moment: after the long journey through the Moon's uncertainty, as the reward for having walked the path honestly and all the way through.
In love, the Sun is the relationship that has nothing left to hide.
What the Sun Feels Like in Love
The Sun in love is the feeling of being completely seen and completely delighted in. Not seen despite your flaws — seen including them. Not loved in spite of who you are — loved because of who you are, the whole complicated, imperfect, fully human person that you are.
It is the feeling of a relationship where you do not have to manage yourself. Where you can say what you actually think, feel what you actually feel, want what you actually want — and be met with warmth rather than judgment. Where the performance has finally, completely stopped, because there is nothing left to perform.
It is the feeling of joy — not the electric excitement of early love, which was the Fool's energy, but something more sustaining. The joy of a relationship that has been through the Tower and the Moon and the Devil and the Death and has emerged on the other side not broken but clarified. The joy of two people who know each other — really know each other — and have chosen each other anyway, again and again, all the way to here.
It is also the feeling of ease. The Sun's love is not effortless — the journey to get here required enormous effort. But the love itself, at this stage, has a quality of ease that earlier stages did not. The work has been done. The patterns have been examined. The shadows have been integrated. What remains is the genuine thing, and the genuine thing flows.
The Child on the Horse: Innocence Restored
The Sun card often shows a child riding a white horse, arms spread wide, face turned toward the sun. This child is not the Fool's naive innocence — the innocence of someone who has not yet been hurt. This is restored innocence — the innocence of someone who has been through everything and has come out the other side with their capacity for joy intact.
In love, this restored innocence is one of the most precious things available. It is the ability to be present in love without the weight of every past hurt. Not because the past didn't happen — it did, and it shaped you — but because you have done the work of integrating it rather than carrying it as armor.
The child on the horse is not protected by armor. They are protected by something better: the genuine confidence of someone who knows themselves, who has faced their fears, who has done the work. They can ride with arms spread wide because they are not afraid of falling. Not because falling is impossible, but because they know they can survive it — and that the joy of riding with arms wide open is worth the risk.
The Sunflowers: Turning Toward the Light
Sunflowers turn to face the Sun — a phenomenon called heliotropism. They do not turn away from the light to protect themselves. They turn toward it, fully, completely, without reservation.
In love, the Sun card asks you to practice heliotropism — to turn toward the light in your relationship. To notice what is good, what is working, what is genuinely joyful, and to orient yourself toward it. Not to ignore what is difficult, but to not let the difficult become the whole story when the whole story includes this much light.
The Sun's love is not blind to difficulty. It has been through too much to be naive. But it has also learned that where you place your attention shapes your experience. And the Sun chooses, consciously and deliberately, to place its attention on the light.
The Sun and Authentic Expression
The Sun illuminates everything — it does not pick and choose what to light up. In love, this total illumination is the energy of authentic expression: the willingness to be fully yourself in the relationship, without editing, without managing, without performing.
This is harder than it sounds. Most of us have learned, through experience, to manage our self-presentation in relationships — to show the parts that are likely to be well-received and hide the parts that might not be. The Sun asks you to stop. To trust that the relationship is strong enough to hold all of you. To discover, through the experience of being fully seen, that you are more lovable than you thought — not despite your full self, but as your full self.
The Sun's Shadow in Love
The Sun's shadow is toxic positivity — the insistence on seeing only the light, on maintaining a performance of happiness that denies the genuine complexity of the relationship. The shadow Sun refuses to acknowledge difficulty, dismisses negative feelings as "low vibration," uses the language of positivity to avoid the honest engagement that genuine love requires.
The Sun's joy is not the joy of someone who has never been in the dark. It is the joy of someone who has been through the dark and emerged. The difference is everything. The first is denial. The second is genuine happiness — earned, grounded, real.
When the Sun Appears in a Love Reading
- A relationship is in a period of genuine joy, clarity, and mutual delight — celebrate it
- Authentic expression is being called for — stop managing yourself and be fully present
- The fog has lifted — what you see now is real, not illusion
- A relationship has come through difficulty and emerged stronger and clearer
- Joy is available — allow yourself to feel it fully, without waiting for the other shoe to drop
- Children, creativity, and playfulness are highlighted in the relationship
The Sun's Question for You
Can you let yourself be this happy?
This is the Sun's question, and it is more difficult than it sounds. Because after everything — after the Tower and the Moon and the Devil and the Death — happiness can feel dangerous. Like something that will be taken away. Like something you don't quite deserve. Like something that requires you to stay vigilant, to not relax too completely, to keep one eye on the door.
The Sun asks you to put down the vigilance. To turn your face toward the light. To let the warmth land.
You have earned this. The journey was long. The work was real. And this — this clarity, this joy, this love that has nothing left to hide — is what the journey was for.
The Sun is blazing. The sunflowers are turning. The child is riding with arms spread wide.
Let yourself be happy.
