But they serve fundamentally different functions within that engagement, and understanding the distinction between authority (First Pentacle) and summoning (Third Pentacle) is essential to using each instrument correctly.

The First Pentacle: Authority Over Saturn's Spirits

The First Pentacle of Saturn establishes the practitioner's authority over Saturn's spirits — it is the key that opens the Saturnine sphere and the instrument through which the practitioner's right to command Saturn's intelligences is recognized. The First Pentacle is the foundation of all Saturn work: without the authority it establishes, the practitioner's commands to Saturnine spirits lack the recognized standing that makes those commands effective.

The First Pentacle is most appropriate when:

• The practitioner is establishing their authority within the Saturnine sphere for the first time
• The practitioner needs to assert their right to command specific Saturnine intelligences
• The working requires the recognized authority of the Solomonic tradition to be effective
• The practitioner is working with resistant or powerful Saturnine spirits who require a clear assertion of authority

The Third Pentacle: Summoning Saturn's Spirits

The Third Pentacle opens the channel through which Saturn's spirits are called forth — it is the active instrument of summoning that brings the Saturnine intelligences into contact with the practitioner during the nocturnal working. Where the First Pentacle establishes the practitioner's authority, the Third Pentacle exercises that authority by opening the specific channel of contact.

The Third Pentacle is most appropriate when:

• The practitioner's authority within the Saturnine sphere is already established and the working requires active summoning
• The practitioner seeks to deepen their attunement to Saturn's sphere through repeated nocturnal contact
• The working is specifically oriented toward communion with Saturnine intelligences rather than the assertion of authority over them
• The practitioner wants to amplify the Saturnine quality of an existing working

Using Both Together

The First and Third Pentacles are natural complements for the practitioner who works regularly with Saturnine evocation. The First Pentacle establishes the authority; the Third Pentacle exercises it through active summoning. Many experienced practitioners wear or carry both during nocturnal Saturnine operations — the First Pentacle asserting their standing within the hierarchy, the Third Pentacle opening the channel of contact.
