The Yes or No Tarot Spread: How to Get Clear Answers from the Cards

BY NICOLE LAU

"Will this work out?" "Should I take this opportunity?" "Is this person right for me?" These are the questions that bring many people to tarot—and they are questions that seem to demand a simple yes or no answer. Tarot can provide this kind of directional guidance, but it does so with more nuance than a coin flip. Understanding how to read yes/no from the cards—and how to interpret the important shades between a clear yes and a clear no—is one of the most practically useful skills in tarot.

This guide covers four proven yes/no methods and explains how to interpret the full range of responses the cards can give.

Before You Ask: Is This a Good Yes/No Question?

Not all questions are well-suited to yes/no tarot readings. Yes/no works best for:

  • Questions with a genuine binary outcome (will X happen or not?)
  • Decision points where you need directional guidance (should I do X?)
  • Simple clarifying questions within a larger reading

Yes/no works less well for:

  • Complex questions with multiple dimensions ("Will my relationship work out?" involves too many variables for a simple yes/no)
  • Questions about other people's choices or actions (tarot reads energy, not other people's free will)
  • Questions where you already know the answer and are seeking validation

For complex questions, a three-card or larger spread will give you more useful information than a yes/no reading.

Method 1: The Single Card Yes/No

The simplest yes/no method: shuffle your deck, draw one card, and interpret it as follows:

General Guidelines

  • Upright cards: Generally indicate yes, forward movement, or positive energy around the question
  • Reversed cards: Generally indicate no, pause, or challenging energy around the question
  • Major Arcana: Carry more weight than Minor Arcana—a Major Arcana yes is a stronger yes; a Major Arcana no is a stronger no
  • Court cards: Often indicate that the answer depends on a person or relationship dynamic rather than giving a clear yes or no

Cards That Lean Yes (Upright)

The Sun, The Star, The World, The Wheel of Fortune, The Empress, Ace of any suit, Six of Wands, Ten of Pentacles, Nine of Cups (the "wish card"), Four of Wands, Three of Cups

Cards That Lean No (Upright)

The Tower, The Moon, The Hanged Man, Five of any suit, Ten of Swords, Nine of Swords, Eight of Swords, Seven of Cups, Five of Cups

Cards That Indicate "Not Yet" or "It Depends"

The High Priestess (wait and see), The Hermit (more reflection needed), The Hanged Man (pause required), The Chariot (yes, but with effort), Strength (yes, but with patience), The Magician (yes, if you take action)

Method 2: The Three-Card Yes/No Spread

For more nuanced yes/no guidance, draw three cards and count the yes/no indicators:

  • Draw three cards
  • Assess each card as yes (upright positive), no (reversed or challenging), or neutral
  • Two or three yes cards = yes; two or three no cards = no; mixed = it depends on your choices

The three-card method provides more nuance than a single card—the specific cards that appear as yes or no indicators add qualitative information about the nature of the yes or no.

Method 3: The Five-Card Yes/No Spread

For important questions that deserve more comprehensive guidance:

  • Card 1: The current energy around the question
  • Card 2: What supports a yes outcome
  • Card 3: What supports a no outcome
  • Card 4: What you most need to know
  • Card 5: The directional answer

This spread provides both a directional answer (Card 5) and the context that makes that answer meaningful (Cards 1-4). It is particularly useful when the yes/no question is embedded in a complex situation.

Method 4: The Elemental Yes/No Method

This method uses the elemental attributions of the suits to determine yes/no:

  • Wands (Fire): Yes—active, forward-moving energy
  • Cups (Water): Yes, with emotional nuance—the answer is yes but feelings are involved
  • Swords (Air): Caution—the answer may be yes but challenges are present
  • Pentacles (Earth): Yes, with patience—the answer is yes but it will take time and practical effort
  • Major Arcana: The answer is significant and involves larger life themes

Draw one card and use its suit (or Major Arcana status) as the primary indicator, then refine with the specific card's meaning.

Reading the Nuances: Beyond Yes and No

The most important skill in yes/no tarot reading is recognizing that most answers are not a simple yes or no—they are conditional, qualified, or directional:

  • "Yes, if...": The answer is yes, but it depends on a specific action or condition (The Magician, The Chariot, Strength)
  • "Not yet": The timing isn't right, but the answer may become yes (The Hanged Man, The Hermit, The High Priestess)
  • "No, but...": The direct answer is no, but there is an alternative path or reframe (The Tower, Death, The Moon)
  • "It depends on you": The outcome is genuinely open and depends on choices not yet made (Court cards, The Lovers, The Wheel)

Going Deeper Than Yes or No

Yes/no readings are useful for directional guidance, but the most valuable tarot readings go beyond binary answers to illuminate the full complexity of a situation. For practitioners ready to move from yes/no to comprehensive spread work, 50 Tarot Spreads: A Visual Guide provides 50 layouts that address every type of question with the depth and nuance that yes/no readings can't provide.

For practitioners building a daily practice that includes both yes/no pulls and more comprehensive readings, the 30-Day Tarot Practice Workbook provides a structured framework that develops the interpretive skills needed to read beyond the binary.

Recording your yes/no readings—noting the question, the card(s), your interpretation, and whether the outcome matched the reading—is the practice that most develops yes/no reading accuracy over time. The High Priestess Tarot Journal provides a dedicated space for this kind of outcome tracking and practice documentation. Building on this foundation, I have found that combining consistent daily pulls with structured journaling has been the most transformative part of my own tarot journey. For deepening that reflective practice further, the 30-Day Tarot Practice Workbook offers a guided month of exercises, while the 52-Week Tarot Journey provides a full year of weekly spreads and daily pulls for those ready to commit to long-term growth. The Tarot Journaling Prompts and Shadow Work Tarot guide further support the kind of layered self-inquiry that turns every reading into a meaningful conversation with the self.
