Three Trajectory Patterns: Convergent, Oscillating, and Phase Transition Readings
Share
The systems approach to tarot identifies three fundamental trajectory patterns that appear across readings. Recognizing which pattern is present changes everything about how a reading is interpreted and what kind of guidance is most useful.
These three patterns are not theories — they are descriptions of how complex systems actually move through state space. They map onto recognizable life situations with striking precision, which is why the systems framework makes readings significantly more accurate and actionable.
Pattern One: Convergent Trajectory
What it is in systems terms: A convergent trajectory describes a system moving steadily toward a stable attractor. The dynamics are organized and directional: the system's current momentum is aimed at a specific destination, and the forces in play are generally aligned with getting there. The system is converging on its attractor.
How it appears in readings:
- Consistent suit or thematic content across past, present, and future positions
- Numbers generally increasing (early numbers in the past, later numbers in the future)
- Stable attractor cards in outcome positions (Tens, Kings, completion-energy Major Arcana)
- Reinforcing feedback cards dominating the spread (the energy is building toward something)
- General coherence and alignment in the cards' collective message
What it means for the reading: The situation has direction and momentum. Something is being built, resolved, or reached. The appropriate guidance is usually to understand what the attractor represents, confirm that it is genuinely what is wanted, and align actions with the convergence. Resistance is often counterproductive; working with the momentum rather than against it is usually the more effective path.
Common life situations: A project moving toward completion, a relationship deepening naturally, a career trajectory building on itself, a healing process making real progress. The situations where things are "going somewhere" in a way that feels meaningful and real.
Pattern Two: Oscillating Trajectory
What it is in systems terms: An oscillating trajectory describes a system trapped in a limit cycle — a pattern of recurring states that the system moves through repeatedly without resolving into a new configuration. The system is stuck in a loop: it reaches a state, moves away from it, but consistently returns to it rather than establishing a new equilibrium.
How it appears in readings:
- Similar cards in both the past and future positions — the "future" looks like a recurrence of the past
- Cards from opposing ends of a spectrum appearing together (high hope alongside persistent frustration, action alongside stagnation)
- The presence of cards that describe recurring themes: the Moon (recurring fears), the Eight of Swords (recurring limitation pattern), the Two of Pentacles (chronic juggling without resolution)
- No clear directional momentum — the spread feels like it is describing a situation rather than a trajectory
What it means for the reading: The situation is not resolving because something is maintaining the loop. The most important guidance in an oscillating trajectory reading is identification of the maintaining mechanism: the belief, pattern, or dynamic that keeps the system returning to the same states rather than moving through them. Simply addressing the symptoms of the loop — managing the recurring difficulty without addressing what generates it — will not change the trajectory.
Common life situations: Recurring relationship patterns, chronic cycles of avoidance and confrontation, situations that seem to resolve and then reassemble in the same form, "why does this keep happening?" questions. The situations that have been worked on many times without lasting change.
Pattern Three: Phase Transition Trajectory
What it is in systems terms: A phase transition trajectory describes a system approaching or crossing a critical threshold — a tipping point beyond which it will reorganize into a qualitatively new configuration. The situation is in genuine transformation: not just change in degree, but change in kind.
How it appears in readings:
- High-energy transition Major Arcana in present or near-future positions (Tower, Death, Wheel, Hanged Man, Judgment)
- Dramatic discontinuity between the past cards and future cards — the future is qualitatively different from, not just further along from, the past
- A sense of maximum pressure or instability in the present-moment cards
- Repeller cards describing an unstable state that cannot be sustained
- New-beginning cards (Aces, Fools) appearing in future positions following high-transition present-moment cards
What it means for the reading: The situation is in genuine transformation. The appropriate guidance is not to prevent the transition — which is often not possible once the threshold has been approached — but to navigate it well. This means releasing what belongs to the old configuration with as much grace as possible, and positioning intentionally for what is emerging on the other side.
Common life situations: Major life transitions, the endings of significant life chapters, moments of breakthrough or breakdown that change everything, the experiences that divide life into "before" and "after." The situations where the person already senses that things will never be the same.
